Maybe because they just acquired the BEST pass rusher in football. Makes sense to me. Verse appears headed down the Clowney line. Great presence but can't close the deal with a limited pass rusher arsenal.
I loved what Verse brought to the team. His energy, attitude, and physicality were contagious, and his run defense took a major step forward last season. That said, his pass-rushing game still leaves a lot to be desired. He's largely reliant on power, and we've all seen the same issue over his first two seasons—too many missed opportunities to finish plays. There were plenty of times he got pressure on the quarterback but failed to wrap up what should have been sacks.
Overall, I like the trade. The Rams acquired arguably the best pass rusher in the NFL while moving a player who is going to command a massive contract in free agency. The reality is that Verse may not be worth top-five edge rusher money based on what he's shown so far.
Some people ask why the Rams didn't trade Young instead. The answer is simple: Young is the better player right now. Could Verse take a huge leap next season and develop into the best outside linebacker in football? Absolutely. If that happens, this trade could end up looking like a mistake in hindsight.
But based on what we know today, the Rams have assembled what looks like the best defense in the NFL on paper. Whether it lives up to that potential is another question entirely, but there's no denying the talent that's now on this roster.

Comparing Garrett to Verse is comical. Garrett is a game wrecker. Remember Aaron Donald? He has to be accounted for every play and stands out in TV. I like Verse but he regressed in year 2. A red flag. Missed a ton of tackles too. His mouth sure moved a lot tho. Perhaps read too many of his press clippings?

This is definitely one of those moves that hurts immediately on the surface. I really expected to have Verse in the lineup for years to come. So much so that my home, away, and rivalry jerseys all have number 8 on them. The other side of that coin is an absolute pass rushing beast and I know that if I read Seachicken fans thoughts on this, it's going to make me feel ALOT better!!
Nice summary of how I feel right now. I love Verse and appreciate him, but I see it the same way.
Want to thank Verse for what he brought to this defense in an era where AD went out the door. But I am fucking ecstatic to see what Garrett can do in this defense.

It's hard to imagine us not being at least in the top 3 overall in most metrics now. Shula just had an offseason every DC dreams of but now he's gonna need to live up to expectations.
I agree overall with your logic minus the fact that its built on "Potential" vs. "Actuall Production".
Verse may be the next big name, but he isn't now. The Rams know that Myles + Ty Simpson or Ty + Verse in a year or two is not the same as Stafford + Myles now.
