As soon as I can add a tennis ball, I'll send another pic...

Judah is 7.5 months old now. His favorite thing is swimming... he will just jump in and swim for the hell of it... he'll retrieve things too, but just add water and he's fine. We're taking him out on the boat with us for the 1st time this weekend. I think he's gonna shit.

Took these a few minutes ago.

Both Sam and my last lab liked to do that swimming around for the hell of it or what seemed like an excuse to get a drink - even in salt water. Dumbasses. Nixon used to go in after a tennis ball or stick then spit it out and swim around for a while before bringing it back. Sam spits out, turns, puts his paw up and says fuck you, swims around for a while, goes right by the stick or ball and comes over to you to shake. Did I mention he’s a real dick?

Took Judah out on his 1st real boat ride the weekend before last. There was a tropical storm whipping it's very outer bands around FL that weekend, but we had cabin fever and went out anyway.

When I beach my boat... the bow sits up over 5 feet from the sand. Judah could easily jump up right onto the bow from the beach. We were surprised.

If he wasn't standing guard on the bow... he was swimming for the hell of it. It was low tide when we were there so the water looks kinda dank.

Keep him going out on the boat. My last dog loved it as a puppy but as we started to do more crabbing and less leisure stuff, we started leaving him at home for space. Big mistake. Suddenly he was scared of docks; then we got him over that; then he wouldn't get in the very boat he used to leap into as a puppy, then every time we took him out, all he wanted to do was get out of the boat. That dog would white knuckle his entire trip to the point we had marks on our floor board from him gripping. He would do nothing but whine while I was driving the boat. Sadly, we just started leaving him at home.

The current dog not only loves getting into boats - as he did when we were in Tahoe and it wasn't our boat or even owned by anyone knew - but will climb into our kayak when he gets tired. I won't have him scratch up Becky's legs (selfish reasons there;)) so I have him get in mine. He will swim with us for miles before this happens but at a point, you think, "is he going to sink or swim?" He loves to swim just to swim so I figure he's climbing in for a reason. Fucker just lays there and checks out the scenery as I paddle with an overloaded kayak. Somehow Karma must be catching up to me on this dog. I tried to give him away TWICE.

He's a great dog until you want him to be a great dog. Otherwise he is a royal dick. And I say that in the most loving way I can because he relishes in being a dickhead. It's all too obvious. Maybe that's why I love him more than I should. The fucker jumps up on the bed as soon as Becky's alarm goes off so he can get his ritual back scratch. If I try to call him up on the bed, he barks and growls. Other times, he won't give Becky the time of day but will be at my beck and call. Yep - he's a loveable dickhead.

But I digress - as usual. Keep taking him out on the boat if you want him out on the boat as a regular fixture because you KNOW one of you is going to insist on it at some point . Boat dogs are cool. In our case Becky always wanted US (the boys and I) to take him out when we had a boatload of crab traps and it was supposed to be just me and the boys. Oddly, she didn't want him drooling on her legs when we went to the lake or the coast. Besides.... that was MY job.:sneaky:

Guess the moral here is - pick your poison. My preference is - good boat dog.

We're taking him down to the Keys with us next week for almost a month. He'll be on the boat every day. I have a feeling he won't want to get off the boat when we come home.

He was jumping into other boats that day too when people would call him over. He's fearless and has crazy agility. He's like an acrobat... that's the poodle in him.

We take him out on our lake dock almost daily and he will leap off like a long jumper into the water. Loves riding in the kayaks too. Luckily he's only gonna be about 40 pounds when he's full grown, so he fits in them fine.

Not to swing this thread into a morbid direction, but I’ve been dealing with so many things with my Molly these past few weeks, it’s driving me crazy. First, she had ACL surgery a couple of weeks ago, and that Vet fucked it up real good. Then, after the surgery, while coming out of anesthesia, she got real sick and her liver enzymes elevated to numbers no vet has ever seen before. So everyone naturally believed it was cancer, and the initial ultrasounds seem to have confirmed it.

But then, we brought her to a specialist (cha-ching), and they drew some samples through some aspirations, sent them off to the lab, and turns out she doesn’t have cancer. However, her liver is so messed up, that we can’t put her back under anesthesia to do another fucking surgery, to not only undo what the first vet did, but to get her ACL corrected, UNTIL Her liver enzyme numbers normalize.

So my best friend has been in the hospital since last Friday trying to get this all straightened out. I went and saw her this morning, and she’s doing OK. She was so super excited to see me that she tried to jump up on all fours to stand up, but her leg being broken, wouldn’t let her. That was kinda sad, but I knew she was happy, so I was only sad about her predicament.

So far I’m $7500 in the hole, trying to figure this out (whatever), And there doesn’t appear to be much to be enthusiastic about. Her numbers suggest she should be super sick, but she’s acting like there’s nothing wrong with her. Other than having a fractured tibia due to another doctor’s negligence.

She’ll be 12 in December, so I have to start thinking about her quality-of-life, obviously. But, you wouldn’t know there’s anything wrong with her and I’m told she’s not in any real pain. So the goal is to try and normalize her liver and get her in for another corrective surgery that’ll cost me another five or six grand. Again, money isn’t a big deal when talking about getting my dog back to normal, but all of this is happening while I’m trying to build a house, so money is leaving my bank accounts at light speed right now. Lol.

Anyway, I just read through this entire thread knowing I’ll have to deal with the inevitable soon, but we are praying that we can delay this decision another couple of years with some quality specialist care. Plus, I just needed to get all this off my chest.

Thanks for listening.

@-X- thoughts are with you and you're right - taking care of your best friend sometimes is all that matters. And somehow it helps to share your thoughts.
I know the feeling and hope Molly comes through this.

Sorry to see this Paulie. These mutts become family members - quite literally - and it's always hard when something happens to them or when they age all too fast. Hope you get your buddy back soon.

Just put our older dog, Rosie (yes, named after Rosie Grier) to sleep. Always sucks, not unexpected as we probably kept her hanging on a little too long.
Leaves us with one dog. A Carolina Dog (aka, American Dingo). Interesting breed. The dog does not bark, which I am enjoying.

Throwing some good vibes your way @-X-

hope it all works out.

The wife has been slowing introducing our Bella and Max to another pibble from the local shelter. Have a feeling he will be in our house by the end of the month.

We need a bigger house

So I think my boy Max has a torn ACL in one of his hind legs...jumped off the deck to chase a rabbit and has been hobbling all day... goes to vet first thing in the morning
