Not punching it in is certainly disappointing and aggravating but the way they didn't do it is even worse IMO. Okay, they had to try and run Richardson because Stacy was dinged up so I can see why they might not be confident he could get it all the way into the end zone. But closing the formation on 3rd down, stacking the box and telegraphing a running play? Then bringing Stacy in on 4th down then spreading him wide left and emptying the backfield?!? Jeebus, the plan was to remove any possibility of a run after they had gashed them all night long?Hats off to the DEF. But some of the play calling was awful. Bad execution at times as well. Rams had fantastic field position almost all game and were even in the red zone 3 or 4 times and could only muster field goals??? I'm sorry but when you have 4 plays to make it into the end zone inside the 5 yard line (at home) to win the game and you CAN'T punch it in... something is very wrong.
I would have just put the DEF out there, had JJenks take the snap and let the DEF find a way to get the TD. Those guys play with heart. I don't know what the guys on offense are doing.
It's just idiotic. Even if the Rams knew Stacy's ankle was too bad to run on that doesn't mean the Seahawks did. And if it was that bad then it's a total waste to spread him out wide. You know you're not going to throw it to him so you're basically reducing your offense to 10 players. Out wide he isn't going to bait anyone because no one thinks he's going to get the pass even assuming they thought he was healthy. I'd have much rather had Richardson in there if they were going to split the RB wide and empty the backfield because at least he could run and possibly be an option if things broke down.
Just terrible playcalling at the end. At the very least, they should have run it 3 times in a row with normal formation and a fullback and then decided to maybe go play action on 4th down. But the Rams have been outsmarting themselves all year trying to be cute at the worst times.
Like last week in Carolina. Instead of establishing the run and opening the game with a carry to Stacy they go for a deep pass. Not a bad idea if your line has held up but really an unneeded risk to start a game.
