This is a story from the parents of children with Down Syndrome here in the city I live in and the son of one of my coworkers who just happens to be playing for a National Championship tonight. My daughter used to help these children when she was dancing at the same dance studio and she also went to school with both Michael and Maggie.
This is long but I think it is worth your time to read. We have 2 kids with Down Syndrome, Maggie Bishop and Nathaniel Bishop. This is a Maggie story.
We can’t remember if this was 2017 or 2018. I’m pretty sure it was Feb 2018. Either way it shows the character of a young man that was literally BMOC. He was the 2017 Atlanta-Journal Constitution Georgia HS Offensive Player of the Year! In this state, thats like winning the Heisman. Yet here he is escorting Maggie to The Night To Shine here in Valdosta, February 2018. This is no small thing. From the Tim Tebow Foundation website: “To volunteer at Night to Shine, you will register and receive a background check through your local host church location. Once registered, your local host location will provide you with the necessary information and training you will need to serve at Night to Shine.” He was THE BEST offensive player in the state of Georgia!! Yet he didnt think it was beneath his dignity to subject himself to all those requirements to make a little Down Syndrome girl’s night. And he did it with great dignity, grace, kindness, gentleness and humility.
For those of you that know Michael Barrett, this doesn’t surprise you at all. For everyone else, Michael is a starting linebacker for The University of Michigan and will be playing for the NCAA College Football National Championship tomorrow night. He is still the same humble, kind young man that took Magz to Night to Shine. Just dont cross him on the football field!!! In this day and age where junior college football players drive up in their new Lamborghinis to sign there college letter of intent, Michael is a refreshingly noble example of what Godly character and leadership can look like.
Thank you, Anitren and Mike Barrett for raising such a wonderful young man and empowering him to be such a wonerful human being.
