McVay's decision to run on 3rd and long under 3 min?

If Kyren slides after getting first down yardage, the game is close to over. That's the play that frustrated me....
Kyren’s primary goal on that play was to secure the first down. That required that he got that corner to gain the necessary yardage. His momentum then carried him out of bounds. I think he did what was required of him in that situation.

I thought it made no sense bc a first down wins it and it was going to be the 2 minute warning anyways so clock was going to stop.
This^....It was not McVay's best game, it seemed the conditions called for more running and as @Stl2La so eloquently communicates, with the two minute timeout looming a slant pattern to Puka might have been a better option to win the game.

What are people's thoughts on this?

The field was slick and the passing game had not been very consistent all night.

However, I really wish McVay would get more aggressive in these situations and he just never has.

My thought is that's how McVay approaches football, and I don't think he's going to change. So far it's only cost us the home field advantage in the playoffs, having to play an extra game in the playoffs, and the Division title..... Let's hope it doesn't cost us a playoff exit this Sunday....

In spite of it, were still in it.....

That is exactly what i said to my brother. My brother said, well play better last longer than 7 seconds if incomplete becsuse it will give them an extra play.

I wanted a play action on 1st down.

If I remember correctly it was 2:07, that's not a guarantee 7 second run off on a pass play. I was debating too whether they should pass or run before they ran a play. 7 seconds is a long time for a non-scrambler like Stafford who was being pressured a lot yesterday. Obviously if its complete no problem but its unlikely 7 seconds run off on an incomplete pass unless he has all day to sit back there.

No but then it passes the two minute warning on the punt even if the pass is incomplete.

The decision to run made zero sense there IMO - I think at minimum, you throw a back shoulder to Puka and see if you can get a PI

To me the play calling wasn`t bad but should have factored in the weather more.

Guys looked like they were playing in quicksand. No separation in the passing game. Not even Mr. Get Off The Line of Scrimmage, Hall of Fame WR Devonte Adams could get any separation.

I think we would have been better off just throwing jump balls off of 4-vert concepts. Just throw it up for grabs to whomever isn`t double teamed. That seems to be our advantage when route running is taken off of the table due to weather.

And for the record, we beat the Bears. They did not lose. They went down fighting, unlike the Whiners vs Seattle.

The Whiners went out like B#tches.
So I know the field was heated and covered during the week. Then i saw a report of the field uncovered with a slight dusting of snow on friday. WTF. Why uncover until day of game.

He had the corner and the first down. He then chose to shoulder check the DB, which sent him flying out of bounds. Not going to fret about it as we won the gsme, but I remember thinking shit I wish he had stayed in there. Kyren wanted all that smoke though, haha. Love that dude.

ehh.. it's over.. he fessed up to the lousy play calling

we're on to Seattle
I love how he takes responsibility for his bad play calls. I'd love it even more if his play calling reflected his comments. I always hear him say "there's no style points in a win", yet his play calling would suggest he believes otherwise. Too many games he goes for the awesome big play like last night, over and over and over again when it wasnt there, instead of taking whats being given to him. Ive come to accept that this is just how he coaches, unfortunately. Lucky for us it works out more times than not.

Waiting till third down with limited gains on first and second down made it a much harder decision. Throwing on second or even first down would have surprised the defense—shorter developing plays.

Didn't make much sense to me. Two minute warning mere seconds away and Bears with plenty of time outs. That clock is stopping whether you run it or pass it. You have an MVP QB, Puka, and Devante. Why not try to get 1st down with a very low INT% passing play? It's not like running the ball is immune to a turn over. And a 1st down there might well ice it. McVay is a great coach but that was a head-scratcher. Evans then hit an absolutely awful punt, with the Bears starting at mid-field, which is forgotten about due to the win, but was egregiously bad by him. He needs to pick up his game. Way too inconsistent lately. I thought to myself, "that's what you get for playing scared, we might have just choked this thing away". Thankfully, this team is gritty as hell, and pulled out the W anyway.

EDIT - even weirder to not try for the 1st down there with how bad our special teams are. Almost burned us.
Also weren't they in for the block, could have tossed an easy pass to one of the wingman.

I'm sure there are calls McVay regrets. However, the majority of the time he takes responsibility ... comments like 'that's on me' or 'I need to put the players in a better position' or, simply, 'bad call by me' ... that's nothing more than the head coach trying to take some of the pressure, responsibility and/or criticism off his players.

It's nothing more than good, smart coaching and coach-speak.

Of course there are bad decisions and poor play-calling ... especially when a play does not work ... however, that being said, I think McVay is an excellent play-caller ... and an outstanding head coach.

I think McVay has been great this season as well..... To me his only issue he needs to grow a little more of a spine and trust Stafford to put teams away.

You wanted the Rams to run a fake punt from inside their 20, with a 7-point-lead, and 2 minutes to play?
Assuming Evans can throw and the Wingman can catch, yes. If doubts about that, then no. But was an opportunity. Not like an OL out to catch. Punt was pretty horrible. So cold have been better.

I think McVay had zero confidence in Stafford not turning the ball over in a key moment if he took risk. Not to mention Stafford wasn't anticipating all the blitz packages, the Bears had done such a good job to that point with manufacturing hits and pressures on the QB. So some of that is on the QB and some is inevitably on the fact the other coach cooked up some good shit for the game.

I agree with the idea that it was too conservative. But what is funny here is the Bears lost because their QB threw a horrific INT in OT when they had us on the ropes. So while McVay's conservativism got us into OT potentially, it also was conservatism that resulted in us winning that game.

In total it's a waste of time to question decision making when you win. It's like when you ride to dinner with your kid driving. You may wish they had taken a different route, but if you get there in one piece and in time for your dinner reservation maybe the path you wanted to take wouldn't have ended up as well. So why worry about it.

We got lucky. McVay dodged a bullet. But luck has ever been a part of this game.
