Well if they're convinced he is the heir apparent, then you dont mess around and you just draft him at 13
On the other hand, if there is a player available at 13 who teams are looking to trade up for, then he's probably the player the Rams should take. This doesnt appear to be a deep draft where picking up a 4th/5th round pick will get another stud player

I get this perspective. I'd be fine with him earlier in the 1st but don't prefer they take him at 13.

To your point though on risk/reward, if he has early 2nd value, it's better to take him late 1st to get that 5th year option. Now if you consider him to have late 2nd value, they shouldn't do that.

Yeah good point, too often we default to rounds when we should really be talking picks. I'm ballparking 40-50 for me which sits him in the middle of the second round and while the 5th year option is good, I have to think the same thing with risk and reward and consider how much I want to pay for the 5th year option on a QB that I'm probably overpaying for with a mid 2nd round grade anyways.

Of course, with QB inflation, I expect him to go between 20-40. Do I pay that interest? Do I pay interest for a 5th year option?
 
In briefly reviewing the 1st round, the teams that jump out to me where Simpson will land are the:

Jets #16 (Geno Smith not long term answer.)
Steelers #21 (Aaron Rodgers?)
Rams (with a trade down, and Jets and Steelers don't pull the trigger)

The Jets have 3 1st round picks in 2027 and will get their QB of the future then.
I could see them trading Justin Fields to Cleveland for Dillon Gabriel

So, maybe the Steelers then? I can't see any other teams, besides the Rams, that have some type of immediate need (this year) to go after their QB of the future (with a 1st round pick), and even the Rams aren't desperate to get one this draft either, or may eventually replace Stafford through free agency.

Maybe Steelers but depends on how they view Simpson and yes the next class while not guaranteed will factor in.

Where does Simpson go is going to be a nice subplot to this draft, I don't think it's certain it's in the 1st. Probably a good chance though.
Lots of FA and stuff to play out at the position still too.

I would not discount a cards team either trading back into the 1st or trading down to grab him.

Bucs - They have a out on Baker after this season, could use a young guy on the bench
Vikings - Could they reset and take him?
Steelers - Very real chance
Browns - with 24 could they take a shot?

Outside of a trade back into the 1st, these are the only landing spots that make sense

Good call on Vikings, but if Simpson didn't work out either...what a mess they'd have.

Good call on the Bucs, if they want to move on from Baker after next season and groom Simpson for the year.

With Bucs at pick 15, and Vikes at 18, seems if Simpson is the one the Rams want, they couldn't afford the risk to trade back and would have to take him at 13, or risk losing him to the Bucs or Vikes.

So, feels like if the Rams want Simpson, it's pick 13 or forget it (as a guess heading into the draft). A Cards trade back would probably reinforce the Rams needing to use #13 to get Simpson.
