He's such a competitor that he couldn't go out with a loss.
No way he's fully recovered physically from last season but probably made his mind up the day after the NFC Championship loss that he was coming back.
First ballot Hall of Fame material right there.

They were just in Cabo together and Stafford said he had already been thinking and talking to his family about continuing to play even before the season ended. I'm fairly certain his future was something they had (did) discuss prior to tonight and McVay had a good idea of where his head was at - they have a great relationship and mutual respect for each other. Can't imagine Stafford wouldn't have let McVay and Snead know before announcing it tonight.

Excellent. He gives the Rams the best chance to win the SB next year and coming back gives the team more time to arrange a successor.

I don't see us in a desperate situation where we have to mortgage the future that much.
The Rams have the maneuverability within their current cap space to acquire major upgrades at the positions of their choosing, whether that's at CB, WO, LB, edge or at OT.
I think it would be smarter to get some positions upgraded such as OT , LB and maybe even a WO or CB through FA.
We have the cheese and the team moxie to do it. Great players actually want to play here.
Our first 3 picks can then be used to fill in the remaining skill position holes and also get younger, at a lesser cap hit, then take the BPA to finish up the draft.
