The wife and I are planning a loop around the country this summer. Headed out to Seattle and back. Doing an Alaskan cruise out of Seattle but taking in as much as possible on the trip out and back. Anywhere near you that is interesting that we may not have heard of before? This is going to be a 37 day adventure so we are somewhat flexible.

Here are a few......
1. Medicine Wheel/Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark, located at 9640 feet on Bighorn National Forest.
2. Zion National Park
3. Bryce Canyon National Park (prettier than the Grand Canyon, by far)
4. If you are rolling through South Dakota, you might as well stop at Wall Drug.
5. Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments
6. Yellowstone National Park...I believe the government made entrance to the park free for veterans? It's worth seeing the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and fool tourists trying to get killed by grizzly bears for a picture. Jackson Hole isn't that far away and it has some cools shops (or at least it used to).
7. Lead, South Dakota. Located in the Black Hills, founded as a mining town (mosr productive gold mine in the West). Most of the town is preserved and is on the National Historic Register. If you like the old west and mining history, this would be fun.
8. Wind Surfing on the Columbia River at Hood River, Oregon.
9. See Multnomah Falls and walk to the top of it. The Columbia River Scenic highway goes by it and several other beautiful falls on the way towards Portland (this is not I-84).

Forgot the Grand Tetons

Plus the Oregon Caves are pretty cool

And you have to check out Yosemite, Sequoias and the Redwoods

Hearst Castle is cool

And Monterrey is nice

But drive as fast as you can past San Fran - shit city if you ask me

Edit - just saw places that you may have not heard of so only Grand Tetons and Oregons Caves probably fit that category.

Everything else is fairly well known

Grand Tetons are cool to look at as you drive by them at highway speed...HY 101 is fantastic heading up the Oregon Coast...I was trying to be somewhat heading toward Seattle. Going to Yosemite is way out of the way to me

Not sure if you've heard of Virginia City, NV but it's a fun old west town and the wife and I'd be happy to show you around Bo.

my Mom and her boyfriend made almost the exact trip about 20 years ago...drove from Naples Florida up to Bellevue Wa ( where he was from), went on an Alaskan cruise for his grandaughters wedding, and drove across the top of the country to Connecticut and RI, then back down to Florida

Nice job overloading him with your encyclopedia of old man sites of interest.

Whenever the missus drags me anywhere my priority is ensuring I know where I'm going to be eating and drinking. So I like to use this site to check out some of Guy Frieri's show stops. Since he is my spirit animal and all. :laugh4:

If it were me, I'd definitely take some time in Northern California, and Colorado. If you can take a break for the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, you'll never forget it. It's three days in a box canyon, with some of the best music around. I've seen Elvis Costello, David Byrne, and a lot others there. Definitley do some baseball games in some stadiums along your way.

Thanks! Keep them coming. I had the Grand Tetons on my list already but old mining towns and Western towns are way cool to me. Just have to head my wife towards them. I've got Rushmore, Yellowstone, Badlands, Custer State Park, etc on the back trip. Planning on hitting California around LA and then working my way up to Cambria then over to Kings Canyon and Yosemite before hitting the coast again at Bodega Dunes and tent camping all the way up the coast. I'm too old to be doing this shit but gotta do it while I'm breathing.

I think I'll hit everything on your list except Zion and Bryce Canyon. That'll have to be on an encore trip's itinerary. Everything else is right on my planned route.

Will miss that by a month but sounds like a good time to see Colorado at a later date.

I think our next trip will be north to Maine and all points in the NE that I've never seen.

Yeah, we debated over that and might skip Yosemite. We won't have a deadline after the cruise and Grand Tetons are on our route home.

The Badlands are cool....A lot of formations like in Bryce Canyon, except not as colorful. We went to Wall Drug after exiting the Badlands.

I know a guy who has an off the grid sort of cabin.....thing....on the side of a wooded hill in the Pacific Northwest.
He swears he is in regular communication with a small group of Bigfoot (Bigfeet?) that cross his property.
I can see if he's free if you want to check it out........that said, fair warning, he is the kind of guy who would live in an off the grid cabin thing to communicate with Bigfoot.

Nah. I had to move when Mr. Bigfoot found out I was stalking his wife.

Glacier Montana is Gods country

Hoh rainforest.

There’s a bunch of beautiful places to visit. A lot has been mentioned.

There’s a great app called Roadtrippers where you can map out your route and you can filter in points of interest within whatever radius you choose. It’ll show you hikes, camping, and attractions. I’ve found some cool things using it. Recently found Bearizona, which is a drive through wild animal park. My car got circled by some curious wolves, and approached buy numerous other animals. It was a fairly quick fun thing to do with the fam. Never would have heard of it if not for that app.
