'We Want To Win It!': Rams GM Les Snead Reveals Backup QB Plans​

With a proven veteran and Super Bowl champion in Matthew Stafford at quarterback, the Los Angeles Rams can consider themselves blessed at the game's most-important position.

For as good as Stafford is, though, he's sadly not invincible. The two-time Pro Bowl quarterback just turned 36 last month, and he's dealt with multiple injuries over the past couple of seasons. As a result, the Rams must make sure they have a viable backup plan in case Stafford goes down again next season.

Rest assured, general manager Les Snead is well aware of this predicament, and he intends to be aggressive in addressing it this offseason.

“What we do want to accomplish this year is making sure we have … if we ever have to go play a game without Matthew in the lineup, we want to be able to win it,” Snead said, per Rams Newswire. “And I think this year, different than last year based on salary cap, could allow us to maybe do a veteran QB. The flexibility with the cap does allow us to do that where last year, we thought, you know what, let’s try to be the most competitive team with our starting 22, but it did come back to hurt us definitely (in) one game last year.”

The game Snead is referring to is the Rams' 20-3 road loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 9, in which they were forced to start Brett Rypien at quarterback as Stafford dealt with a thumb injury. That game was by far the Rams' worst offensive showing of the year, as they scored a season-low three points with just 187 yards of total offense, also a season-low. Rypien himself was ineffective at best, as he completed just 13 of 28 passes for 130 yards with an interception.

That game made the Rams realize that they needed a backup option, and just a few days later, they would sign Carson Wentz to address such a need. Wentz only played one game with the Rams, the regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers while Stafford was resting, but he was quite solid in that game.

The No. 2 overall pick in 2016 is slated to become a free agent next week, but the Rams would happily welcome him back as a backup.

Coincidentally, that Packers game was also the Rams' last before they went on a 7-1 run to close the year and make a surprise playoff appearance. Maybe having a viable backup behind Stafford contributed to the turnaround in some way, even if Wentz didn't play much.

Whether or Wentz or someone else, Snead is committed to having stability at the backup quarterback position this fall.

The list of free agent QBs is a looooong one. At least two will be starters. Cousins and Mayfield. 7 others were first round picks. Then there are 3 of 4 being dangled as trade bait (Z.Wilson, J. Fields, M. Jones) plus Russell Wilson.

10 UFA former first round picks? Including Mayfield, Winston, Wentz, Mariota, Darnold, Tannehill. There are many who've been career backups with lots of starting experience. Brissett, Taylor, Minshew, Bridgewater, etc.

Lots of options for a #2.

I'm not sure I lean strongly one way or another but I do like Tyrod and feel like he's always had terrible luck in his career. Would be curious how he would do under McVay. I also can't believe he's 34 already.

Brisset, IMO, is the prize of the back up QB's. He might get a chance to start this year however and is likely getting 6m+ which probably prices us out of it. Tyrod is interesting and projected to get 2/4.5m, which is far more reasonable. I'd kick the tires on Darnold too, who's projected at 1/4.75m. Tannehill has certainly hit the wall and has played worse year after year, but is a solid vet option. I'd be pretty happy just bringing Wentz back and grabbing a guy later in the draft. No idea what Wentz will cost though.

Id be fine with a cheaper vet option than Wentz.
Taylor throws an amazing deep ball and is athletic as hell.
Just is getting older and can't stay healthy.

Seems pretty obvious Snead will be looking for an experienced backup over a rookie. They might draft one later in the rounds for their 3rd quarterback and see if they get lucky. I hope its a guy with a strong arm. I'm tired of noodle arm backups.

Shorter term deal for Baker, and he'll only be 31 when his next contract comes up, he might get paid even more next time. So it's a nice chunk of change and they are only stuck with him for probably two years if he doesn't live up to expectations.

I will gladly take Carson for our backup this year, he's good enough to win games, and already knows the offense. Only sticking point will be the money. Maybe he takes a one year deal again.

Taylor is a more dynamic runner and I wasn’t impressed with Wentz passing versus the Niners. If not Taylor, then Minshew or Huntley.

In fairness to Wentz, he was sitting on his ass for 10 months before he came to us. Sure he did workouts, but its not like facing a defense.

But he was sitting on his ass for 10 months cause people didn't think he could start or backup. I think we had a great gameplan for him against a team that really didn't have anything to play for at that time in the season.

I think we can do better, especially if we go vet with this class of FA.

Man, I'd love to have Minshew as QB2, 63% career comp, just about a 3-1 TD-INT Ratio.
Made 3.5 mill last year.
He's the type of guy worth overpaying for, in total value and length of deal

I like Wentz as a backup, but I would much rather see the Rams bring in a young guy that could learn the ropes for a couple of years under Stafford and then take over the reins.
