los angeles rams running back todd gurley on the bench

The Los Angeles Rams were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 16. With nothing to play for in Week 17, it’s very possible that some of the team’s top stars may start their offseason prep a little early.

According to Cameron DaSilva of RamsWire, the Rams could be resting their players in Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals. Per the report, players who are currently dealing with injuries such as Todd Gurley, Jalen Ramsey, Troy Hill, Gerald Everett and Bobby Evans are all candidates to rest this weekend.
DaSilva called it “a safe bet” that Ramsey and others won’t play. But there’s also the possibility that star quarterback Jared Goff might give up reps to backups Blake Bortles and John Wolford.

Via RamsWire:
It’s a safe bet that Ramsey, Hill, Rob Havenstein and Evans won’t play against the 49ers. The Rams could also give either Blake Bortles or John Wolford some playing time in an attempt to protect Jared Goff from unnecessary hits. The same goes for Gurley, who may play less to limit the wear and tear on his knee.

The Los Angeles Rams won the NFC West title and the NFC Championship last season. But despite making huge additions in the offseason and adding Jalen Ramsey before the trade deadline, they couldn’t even reach double-digit wins.
The 2020 offseason will likely make or break this team’s ability to find sustained success with the pieces they have.

Getting Bortles & Wolford some time in would be good, but they better first get Wolford up off the practice squad ...

Sean McVay opens up about relationship with Andrew Whitworth

Andrew Whitworth helped usher in a new era of Rams football in 2017 when he signed as a free agent, coming over from the Bengals where he spent the first decade of his career. Still playing at a high level, he joined Los Angeles and solved one of the team’s biggest problems at left tackle.
He did so with a new coach in Sean McVay, who was at the forefront of the Rams’ rebuild. Whitworth and McVay spent the last three years together in L.A., giving the Rams a unique relationship between a player who was older than his coach.

Whitworth, 38, is in the final year of his contract with the Rams and with the season coming to a close, McVay opened up about how much Whitworth means to him not just as a player, but as a person on and off the field.
“He’s meant a lot. He’s a special individual. Like I’ve said before, one of the most empathetic individuals I’ve ever met in my life. I think that’s a rare quality, I think it’s a great quality for any leader to possess,” McVay said, before getting a jab in at the veteran. “He’s got a great wisdom – he has been playing for 40 years, so he’s got a lot of experiences to draw on. It’s a relationship that I certainly cherish. He’s helped me a lot as your still getting familiar with how to best handle this role and navigate through the things that occur on a daily basis. Somebody like him has been instrumental and I think when you look at when we first got here as a staff, working with Les and his group, for him to represent – he and Robert Woods, really – your first two free agent signings, it’s hard to find two better representatives of what it looks like to go find the right kinds of guys that are wired in all the right ways and are also great competitors.”
Whitworth said he intends to play another season in 2020, but it remains to be seen if that will be with the Rams or another team. Los Angeles doesn’t have much money to spend this offseason and it has a lot of players to pay, so Whitworth might be out of the front office’s price range.
One thing’s for sure, though: Whitworth will be missed if he doesn’t return to the Rams next season, in the locker room, in the community and on the field.

If so, the season's over now. Remember how long its seems that the offseaon gets when you are ready for any kind of football? Even preseason? We have chance to have a winning record by killing these palookas from Zona, but no, we're gonna hobble ourselves down to their level. 8-8, here we fucking come, and Jeff Fisher would be proud.

What a load of crap.

Totally agree. Lots of these players sat out the Pre season and what not and now with one game left and a chance at a winning record McVay is going to give them rest?
Rest from what? Thanks to their lousy play when it mattered most these last two weeks they've got a full 7.5 months to sit around and do nothing.

Mebbe we should face facts that they started their offseason two weeks ago in the Dallas game and no one's heard from them since.
McVay should fight like the dickens to NOT go 8-8 so the stank of Jeff Fisher Football doesn't splash on him and his team going forward.

Just my .02 cents

It's also possible that pigs fly.

This is bullshit.

What about that article about McVay wanting to go out on a good note? And why does that article above say the wire reports players will be sitting against the 9ers?

Lol nice. Give your players a break Sean, they deserve it. Losing to the Cardinals will be a great momentum shift going into the offseason.

Little Jimmy heard from them while he was eating dirt 5 times last week or while their #3 defense dropped to #5.

But write whatever...

It looks more like speculation to me, something possibly to elicit a reaction or comment out of McVay.
I'd think Lindsey Thiry might be the better source if this were to transpire. jmo.

I don't know. The season is over. There's not a lot to play for, at this point. Personally, I'd like to see Obo, Patrick, and some of the newer guys get more experience. But I also never play to lose. Would like to see this team go out on a high note.

Avoiding 8-8 is reason enough to me. I can live with 9-7, 8-8 is Fisher time.

I don't mind one bit. Would be terrible if someone got a long term injury in a meaningless game. Fisher never even went 8-8 with the Rams so Sean is still better than Fisher was.

The Leprechaun needs to remain a winning coach every season he coaches.

Rest them if they are really hurt. Everett should be healthy since he was available last week. Same with Hav who can replace Evans if he can't go. I think McVay will play the best available players. Goff can use the experience while Bortles won't be a Ram next year. I'm sure McVay wants to end the season on a positive note.

Man Sometimes the knee jerk reactions out muscle reading comprehension and analysis. This is completely a speculation article. Everyone should take a step back, take a deep breath and relax. It is Christmas, for heaven's sake.

Merry Christmas all.

Sounds a bit far fetched tbh. I expect us to be playing full force.

I'm on the fence now whether we will go to the game. Honestly, I'll be pissed if I see a preseason game for the last game of this season. Yeah, sprinkle in and rotate some guys, but do NOT sit the starters.
