How do you think Martz revolutionized the league?

My take, was he implemented the Coryell offense, Deep passing game at a time that the league wasn’t prepared for it. Lucky for him he had the WR’s and QB and Oline to successfully execute it.

The league was running a ton of west coast short passing offense (Bill Walsh west coast) and defenses were calibrated to defend that.

Mcvay, from what I can tell is basically tweaking a bunch of west coach and other concepts. Creating a system of tweaks out of 11 personnel.

Mcvays system continues to be copied via the OC’s and assistants that are hired around the league. So, I would call that revolutionizing the league.

Did any other team copy Martz system or try to duplicate it? I seriously can’t remember. I don’t recall too many teams trying or successfully succeeding doing it.

Martz himself couldn’t duplicate it wherever he went and was eventually bounced from the league. Probably because the league caught up and it wasn’t feasible for any team to put together a top Oline along with. Kurt Warner and 3 future pro bowl skill guys.

Yes Mike Martz did revolutionize the league. Did you ever see a "bunch" formation before him ? That was exactly what Warren Sapp was talking about when he referenced turning on a light and cockroaches scattering in every direction.
I seen things I never seen before under Mad Mike.
The Kansas City Chiefs directly copied Martz,s offense. Even got our quarterback to do it. And they did it very,very well.

Puka is putting up all-time numbers.

Who knows where it goes?

Kupp also started out as a older guy and now is one click away from the "injury prone" label.
Bruce shook that label so maybe Kupp will do the same.

I'm kind of just looking at it from a perspective of how good the guys are when they're on the field.

Ike was my absolute favorite Rams WR of all time... Just love him.

But Kupp has surpassed him, in my eyes. The 21 season was transcendental and the playoff performance put Kupp in the place of NFL legends, to me. We'll see if he can stay relatively healthy.... but his best season was better than anyone else's best season.

Puka is far surpassing what Holt did *as a rookie*.. and I have no idea what his real ceiling is, if he stays healthy. Different players. Puka won't get the long stuff that Holt did.. but Holt could never get YAC the way Puka does.

All these years later no team has EVER scored 500 points in three straight seasons except that group.

the cheats did it when they had the gronk and the OG (hernandez) in tandem. they were very difficult to contain when those two were on the field together.

Bruce was clocked at 4.48 at the combine.

Kupp is probably the best YAC WR in the league....we call that a possession receiver?

Kupp is not a burner nor does he play the X or lineup outside and stretch the field most of the time.

Most of his time is spend in the slot working the middle of the field, especially on third down. So yes, he functionally is used as a possession WR.

The fact that he is YAC monster in a possession role just means he is a badass.

It also means you can throw him a slant or have him sit down in front of the chains and trust him to get past the first down marker.

I think the "=" part is about overall effectiveness. Just my two cents.

That's right.

There's been talk of Puka's epic Rookie season taking a production hit due to Kupp's return.

Production wise- I see this as a Bruce/Holt type problem for other teams.

And a shit-eating grin type problem for Stafford.

Yea don’t know. I may be wrong but I think teams Hand clocked back then and maybe the discrepancy is due to what different teams clocked. They also ran multiple times so it may be his best time vs worst that each article is taking.

Martz offense was the tipping point for the league, imo.

True innovation? Maybe not. Changed the NFL approach to offense? Yes.

Biggest thing I remember just noticing as a casual fan was that I don't think I had ever seen as many empty sets in the NFL before. Again.. casual fan stuff, not detailed analysis.

Martz also couldn't adapt, ultimately.

The Organization was criticized for drafting Bruce in the 2nd rnd.
It was considered a reach.

Well, Martz branched under the Zampese tree…whom came from the Coryell tree, I believe.
So, that should add up.

Even then, these guys like to add their own wrinkles and identity.
Martz was a trailblazer, because he had no problem completely abandoning the run game when running the ball was paramount to most.
I once saw him call a game with ZERO run plays in the entire 1st half. Zero

All you had to do was look at the formations under Martz, the motions. He changed things, the whole NFL changed as it is a copycat league.
I watch plenty of football, more than most and have watched every single Rams game for decade after decade and it was never the same after him.
KC was a DIRECT copy. The got our head coach, our quarterback, our 1st round receiver..............................................
