Feel like this guy needs a new/singular thread.

This guy started off rough - but wow does he have elite potential.

A ball hawk who can play center field.

PLUS a DB who can come up and knock the shit out of you - a rare combo.

I was fucking wrong. I didn't like the Kinchens pick. I was fucking wrong, and I'm fucking happy that I was fucking wrong.

Credit to McSnead; they got themselves another JJ3 steal at safety in the third round.

I remember watching last years Baltimore game and how it was so obvious they really needed a playmaker at safety. Fuller just couldn't cover much ground in the secondary.

Kinchens was exactly what the doctored ordered, a ballhawk who can make plays. Lake has stepped up as well, and McCoulough looks to have a future and another guy who has the nose for the ball.

Great Idea starting this.
I was talking to my son about how great our rookie defenders have been, take away v8 & 55 and you still have Kinchens who has been very good. Hell Mcculough has looked promising too.

Love Cam he has a bright future

Let's wait and see how the kid develops. He has improved as the season has gone on but we have had safeties show well and end up not being a long term answer before. No need to crown him yet. Let him earn it.

While I love a lot of what I've seen from Kinchins, I'm going to have to see more to be comfortable with him.

I think the point is, early on, many said we needed a good FS, with range for the backend of our defense. Some said, that was why they drafted Kinchens (their 4th pick). And after 16 games, he looks a lot better now than he did early in the season (maybe because he wasn't getting the snaps and was still learning?). Sure, he has to continue to improve/maintain his level of play but it beats the hell out of a guy who was supposed to do something but didn't.

Rams draft hungry players willing to put in the work.
Kitchens could be a steal. I think McLoed may be the last Ram that I felt was an elite FS. I think Kitchens could be better.
Needs to keep improving

You could say this about any of our rookie defenders.

To me Fiske and Kinchens have been the best.

Didn't he get injured last game? I guess nothing serious?
McVay said he just got a stinger and was fine.

I was extremely down on Kitchens over the first month of the season but he clearly had the lightbulb turn on soon after. This defense has a LOT of really young players that if they keep developing will make this a very dangerous and fun defense over the next 3-4 years. I hope Shula sticks around and doesn't get poached like every other damn coach we have because I really want to see what he can do with it for a few years.

Another point is age.

The Rams have been drafting some older players the past two years; and that can reflect greater maturity (physical and mental) which can result in production more quickly.

Byron Young is 26, Kobie Turner is 25, Verse and Fiske are both 24. Heck, Tyler Davis and Bobby Brown are both 24; and Brown is in his fourth season.

There have been some younger players drafted, with Kinchens one of them. He and Karty are the youngest Rams players at 22.

Kinchens saw action early, and I thought he struggled. After sitting for a while, I think his play has been excellent. I have been surprised and impressed with his tackling and physicality. At just 22, I am hopeful he will develop into a top-tier-starter at safety.

Has anyone had a better two year run on draft picks?

2023: Avila, Turner, Young, Allen, Nacua, Evans. Johnson gets his share of snaps on defense.

2024: Verse, Fiske, Corum, Kinchens, Limmer, Whittington, Karty.

All solid contributors to the Rams success. And figure to contribute to future success. The future is bright.

Probably. But I can't remember one. For sure, nobody has done better in 2023 and 2024.
