It sounds like Samson Ebukam has inside track to starting OLB role

Having productive and dynamic edge rushers in a 3-4 defense is crucial, especially when it comes to freeing up an interior defender like Aaron Donald. The Rams have been cycling through outside linebackers since 2017, and they have yet to land on a long-term plan at the position.

They put a Band-Aid on the situation by signing Leonard Floyd to a one-year, $10 million contract that’s fully guaranteed, but they don’t have a surefire starter on the other side.

Or do they?

Defensive coordinator Brandon Staley hinted at Samson Ebukam being the other starter opposite Floyd, returning to the role he held in 2018 when he started 14 games. Here’s what Staley said about the outside linebacker competition in camp, immediately pointing toward Ebukam after mentioning Floyd.

“Outside rusher, you really have Leonard Floyd – who we’re just really excited to have him – and he is going to be leading that group,” Staley said on a conference call this weekend. “Then Samson has played a lot of football here and played a lot of winning football here. He is a guy that I followed throughout his career as a young player to now. We are excited for him to be able to take a step forward and really get a chance to show what he can do.”

The Rams certainly don’t lack depth at outside linebacker, specifically young talent. Behind Floyd and Ebukam are unproven edge rushers such as Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Terrell Lewis, Jachai Polite and a few others.

If Ebukam is going to be a starter as it sounds he will, the others will be fighting for snaps in sub-packages and as situational pass rushers. Staley didn’t leave them out, they just weren’t mentioned in the group with Floyd and Ebukam. But he did indicate that the competition at outside linebacker will be ongoing throughout the season, which is a good sign for these younger players.

“And then you’ve got really a bunch of young players that are looking to prove themselves in the NFL. I’m talking about ‘Obo,’ I am talking about Terrell Lewis, Natrez Patrick, Justin Lawler, all those guys, Jachai Polite,” Staley continued. “There is a group of young players that are looking to establish themselves in the NFL. So, a lot of competition at that position. (Outside linebackers coach) Chris Shula is one of the best coaches I know coaching them, so that process is going to be all the way up until the game and probably throughout the season. You will see a lot of competition at that position and just sorting through who is going to play what role and all that good stuff.”

The Rams don’t lack intriguing options at edge rusher, it’s just a matter of sorting through the competition and finding which players can emerge as playmakers.

Not sure if either Floyd or Ebu replace what we lost in Fowler.
I have a lot more hopes for Lewis.
Obo can get LOW. I think he's a great rush sub package guy. On 3rd & long, Lewis - Fox - AD - Ebu - Obo would be sick, backed by Floyd & Kiser. Throw in Rapp on a delayed blitz.

I would agree. I don't think it will be hard to replace him with a cheaper alternative.

I still think someone surprises dramatically. like OBO or Patrick.
Yeah I agree that's how things will go. It's nice to see Ebu get the benefit of the doubt, as he's earned it. But I'll be surprised if he can hold off Obo who is a better player to my eye at least.

Also I don't know why they keep listing Patrick as ILB. I'm sure he can play there but the only time he's really shown out is when he's rushing.

IMO blindside needs to be Obo or Lewis. If it's not one of those two guys we're in for a pedestrian rush from that side basically. And even in Obo's case it's not like I think he'll be dominant. It's that I think he has a combo of skills that will play on the blindside.

Not surprised Samson is the in the front seat to start, excited to see what the combo of Floyd, Patrick, Lewis, and Obo have to offer. Thinking Kiser and Young are the leading candidates for that ILB role.

I don't think there was ever a doubt. If anyone has to fight for their job, its Floyd I would think.

Ebu takes over for Fowler while Floyd takes over for Matthews. Both are versatile in playing the run, pass coverage and pass rush.

Ebu gets the nod over others to start because he has the experience. He is the safer choice at this time. There will be a good amount of rotation. We haven't seen the all-around game performance of Obo who flashed some pass-rush ability last year. He will get pass rush rotations early. Rookie Terrell Lewis looks to be the future. He looks like he has been hitting the weights. He has the size, length and potential to be special. He will get some PT probably in pass rush rotations.

Natrez Patrick, Justin Lawler, all those guys, Jachai Polite,”

Fighting for roster spots. I like Polite with his quick first step. However, you can't count out the others.

At the end that says it all. Ebu has to hold off the competition to keep his reps.

I don’t know why some are so iffy on Ebu. That man has made some splash plays. He certainly gets the nod over Obo in my book.

Also there must be something to Polite. He was covered in bust dust but maybe just maybe the Rams will tap into his potential.

I like Obo a lot, but agree with you nonetheless. Ebu has done some good stuff ... and man, when we needed him in that KC game he came through big time. He's also better at run stopping than Clay Matthews, who ran himself out of far too many plays last year.

I don’t know why people are salivating over OBO and Not Ebukam. He got better with every start and towards the end of the year he was much better than Matthews. He’s athletic he can cover he keeps containment and he can rush the passer. He gets over 10 sacks this year. Ebukam is the future.

I really think we'll see an improvement over CM. He overran almost every play. Lost contain over & over. One trick pony. I guess he got himself some sacks, but I'd rather he was more solid in contain last year. Sacks is an overrated stat.

About Obo... I just don't see him coming in except for passing downs, because compared to LF and TL, he's undersized, but that's not knocking Obo... that kid can get LOW. I don't think QB's will even see him coming from the blindside. He's got plus rush skills.

I don’t know if OBO is the future. They’re virtually the same age and Samson has shown up a lot more. I like the guy, but I don’t think his ceiling is as high as others think it is.

My point on that is OBO has an extra season with The Rams. Samson is going to be a Free Agent. Therefore I believe he will get paid. I can see 8-10 sacks easy.

OBo - anything over 4 sacks is better than what I project right now.
