Good point, but me thinks Jay has packed it in, think Kaepernick would be a solid option for them because of Gase.

I don't think Jay has packed it in yet. I think Jay was forced to pack it in because nobody wanted him as a QB1. This would be the ultimate opportunity. He gets a talented team that was in the playoffs last year with a coach who helped Cutler to a career year only a couple years ago. This could be his shot at going out on his terms (whether that's after 2017 or further down the line) rather than being forced out.

Could be right, however, that first game Cutler vs. Brady, my God the pundits will be out in force.

That Tannehill injury looks an awful lot like a play we all experience at Carolina a couple years ago.

Now he might require season ending surgery on that knee despite it not being a tear

I had Vietnam flashbacks while watching that. We had a franchise QB for like 4 games. He looked super legit.

Miami will more likely look to Cutler than Kaepernick considering Gase was Cutler's OC in 2015 before Miami hired him. But that's obviously not guaranteed.

Report: Dolphins have reached out to Jay Cutler

As the Dolphins continue to await word on the severity of Ryan Tannehill‘s knee injury, the momentum for Jay Cutler is building in Miami.

The Dolphins have reached out to Cutler, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports.

Dolphins coach Adam Gase, who coached Cutler when he was the Bears’ offensive coordinator in 2015, has personally been in touch with Cutler, the report says. Cutler had a good season in Gase’s offense and the two get along well personally.

The Bears cut Cutler in March, so he’s a free agent and there are no restrictions on the Dolphins contacting him or signing him. He has already signed with CBS to work as an announcer this year, but that wouldn’t preclude him from changing his mind and returning to the field if the right opportunity arises.

Gase said today that Matt Moore is now the Dolphins’ quarterback, but Gase made clear that’s only the case “right now.” If Tannehill is out for the season, the Dolphins may go shopping for a new quarterback, and Cutler could be the man.

I wonder if they'll rally around Matt Moore, and play good football.

Adam Gase: Jay Cutler is “interested”
Posted by Mike Florio on August 5, 2017

With each passing news cycle, it’s feeling more and more likely that Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill won’t play this year. Although the Dolphins have been very tight lipped about Tannehill’s status, the Dolphins are now openly speaking about potential replacements who surely wouldn’t be added to the roster if Tannehill were expected back in a matter of weeks.

On Saturday, coach Adam Gase confirmed that the team has spoken to retired quarterback Jay Cutler, who played for Gase when he was the offensive coordinator two years ago in Chicago.

“One time,” Gase said regarding his own communications with Cutler. “All I asked him was if he was interested. That was it.”

So what did he say?

“He was interested,” Gase replied. “I think he’s just trying to figure out everything. You don’t expect this to happen. I don’t think he looked at our situation like, ‘Oh, this was going to happen.’ So it was a surprise and I think he has a lot of things to think through.”

Gase made it clear that the team will be adding a quarterback, but that who it will be will depend on whether Tannehill is or isn’t lost for the year.

Whatever they do, it makes sense to explore all options in order to get the best possible deal. Cutler will surely want at least as much as Mike Glennon got from the Bears ($16 million per year), maybe more. Perhaps Cutler will accept less if he thinks the Dolphins will sign someone else.

It also could be cheaper to trade for a quarterback. When the Vikings acquired Sam Bradforda year ago, they gave up significant draft capital but they spent only $7 million for the full season.

However it plays out, time is of the essence. And not because the new quarterback will have to learn Miami’s offense. Gase will have to adapt Miami’s offense to the new quarterback, and then teach it to the rest of the team.

That’s how Gase has done it in the past, from borrowing Navy and Air Force plays when Tim Tebow became the starter in Denver to adopting the Indianapolis offense when Gase became the offensive coordinator with Peyton Manning in 2013, to coming up with the right way to get the most out of Cutler in 2015 to coming up with the right way to get the most out of Tannehill in 2016.

Whoever the Dolphins settle on, Gase and the rest of the staff will then devise the best possible offense to suit whoever will be playing. That doesn’t mean it definitely will work. But that’s definitely the way it will happen.

49ers lose former Super Bowl MVP for the season after practice injury

The 49ers haven't played their first preseason game and they've already lost one of their biggest 2017 free agent signings for the entire year.

The team announced that Malcolm Smith suffered a torn pectoral muscle during practice on Saturday. Although the 49ers didn't specify how long Smith would be out, NFL.com has reported that the linebacker will miss the entire 2017 season. The freak injury happened while Smith was trying to tackle running back Matt Breida, according to ESPN.com.

The loss means that the 49ers biggest defensive investment of the offseason won't be on the field at all this season. Smith was one of the few defensive free agents that the 49ers targeted in March, and they landed him after offering a five-year, $26.5 million deal that included $11.5 million in guaranteed money.

Smith, 28, signed with the 49ers after spending two years in Oakland. He started his career with the Seahawks in 2011 and was MVP of Super BowlXLVIII. Smith signed with the Raiders in 2015.

The injury to Smith means the 49ers will likely have to put rookie Reuben Foster on the field a little bit earlier than planned.

According to 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, the original plan was to work Foster into the lineup slowly.

"The best way I can explain with Reuben is he'll get his opportunity when he absolutely, absolutely deserves it," Saleh said before Smith's injury.

With Smith now out, there's a good chance Foster will be joining Ahmad Brooks and NaVorro Bowman as one of the team's starting linebackers. The 49ers clearly like Foster, otherwise they wouldn't have traded up to grab him during the first-round of the NFL Draft.

Back in April, the 49ers traded up from the second round to grab Foster with the 31st overall pick.

Cardinals lose T.J. Logan for 12 weeks

The No. 1 priority when it comes to the preseason is to emerge from it as healthy as possible. In the first preseason game — the first of five the Cardinals will play this year — they suffered a significant injury to a key young player.

Rookie running back T.J. Logan, a fifth-round draft pick from North Carolina, broke his wrist during Thursday night’s game against the Cowboys. Via the Associated Press, coach Bruce Arians told reporters on Saturday that Logan is expected to miss 12 weeks.

“It was a blow to him,” Arians said. “He was just about to make a nice role for himself. He, obviously, looked electric on the kick returns and the punt returns so somebody else is just going to have to step up and do it.”

Candidates to assume the kick/punt return duties include Kerwyn Williams, Chad Williams, Rudy Ford, and John Brown.

Logan could eventually be placed on injured reserve and return later in the year. A new rule allows teams to bring two players back from IR during the season.

49ers guard Joshua Garnett needs knee surgery, out a month

The 49ers were already undergoing significant structural changes, now the injuries are starting to pile up.

The same day they lost linebacker Malcolm Smith to what could be a serious pectoral injury, they found out they’re going to be without a former first-rounder for at least a month.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, guard Joshua Garnett probably won’t be ready for the start of the regular season because of a knee problem that requires surgery. It’s not believed to be an ACL problem, but the 2016 first-rounder is expected to miss some time.

“I know there’s some stuff in his knee we’re probably going to have to clean up,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I don’t think it’s anything long-term, but it’s going to be a little bit of time.”

Garnett was a bit of a surprise first-round pick last year by then-coach Chip Kelly, but he started 11 games. With him out, the 49ers have veterans Zane Beadles and Brandon Fusco at the guard spots.

The 49ers feared that linebacker Malcolm Smithwould be out of action for an extended period of time after he hurt his chest in practice over the weekend and their premonitions have been proven correct.

The team placed Smith on injured reserve Monday, which means he won’t be playing for them at all during the 2017 season. Smith has been diagnosed with a torn pectoral muscle.

Smith signed with the 49ers this offseason after spending the last two years with the Raiders. The move reunited him with defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, who was on the Seahawks staff while Smith played in Seattle, and Smith was expected to fill a prominent role in their linebacking corps.

His injury opens up a spot for first-round pick Rueben Foster on the weak side of the defense. That move into the first team may be happening more quickly than the 49ers would have preferred, but they’ll need the rookie to pick things up quickly all the same.

The 49ers also announced that they have signed linebacker Austin Calitro. Calitro, who went undrafted out of Villanova, spent 10 days with the Jets in May.

Bears lineman out for the year with torn hamstring
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 7, 2017

The Bears have lost an offensive lineman for the season, cutting into their depth up front.

Bears coach John Fox just told reporters that guard Eric Kush was out for the year, and would need surgery to repair a torn hamstring.

The Bears signed him to a two-year extension this offseason, after he filled in for them last year. He started four games after being claimed off waivers from the Rams.

He has also spent time with the Texans, Panthers, Buccaneers, and Chiefs (who made him a sixth-round pick in 2013).
