I have to admit, I am surprised that people don't think Les Snead could find impact players and even Pro Bowl starters in the first round of the draft, if he elected to do it that way. The last three first round picks he actually made yielded a Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and Pro Bowl QB.
I've always thought he was a strong drafter.
Greg Robinson was seven years ago and I think Les has learned since then.
True, but they were there to take.
I don't think they made the Ramsey trade without doing a thorough draft analysis to see if drafting in the range they expected if those players would aggregate to have a greater impact than Ramsey.
So I think they do as much draft analysis as they can (3 years out isn't really possible) to evaluate what they could be looking at.
They got he DPOY, OPOY and ProBowl QB at #13, #10 and #1.
I think Snead's point is that the value of players from 20-50 is about the same and thus, the impact of 1st rounders isn't as great as a top 10 pick. Moreover, if they can leverage low 1sts for proven impact players while supplementing the roster with overlooked guys in the later rounds... that's been a recipe for success.
The Pats were notorious for trading out of the 1st round and leveraging that late 1st for lots of 2nds and 3rds and the trading down further. For them, they realize that the way to overcome randomness is volume. For them it's a science where others treat drafting as art.
Snead is a combo... Snead is more like a chef who also bakes. Some art, some science.
I really wonder when the Rams win the Super Bowl if much like the McVay effect in coaching if us winning will translate in FOs holding a different valuation of 1st round picks?
