I was wrong about Brandon Staley as Head Coach.

I think most of us were rooting for the man. But as many times it has been shown that a good coordinator isn't necessarily a good HC. He was too inexperienced for the position and simply not ready for all the things that make a good HC. Maybe later in his career or perhaps he never will be.

Do I want him back as DC here? Not necessarily to be honest. I think I'd rather have Pleasant who brought a more varied and aggressive style of defense to this team. He has no control how the front 7 is played. I think he would bring that same style, meaning more of a one gap penetration DL. They simply don't have the type of personnel for a combined one/two gap front. This front plays better when they are one gapping.

I sincerely hope that either Morris is hired as a HC somewhere or bumped upstairs to "consultant" to finish out his contract which IMO is more likely because then he can be a potential comp pick.

I think Staley will return to be a DC and will be good at that if given the people he needs to play his style. That is part of the problem with the Chargers. Tom Telesco is a poor GM who only has been drafting better since he's relied upon pro scouting services. Justin Herbert would be a fit for McVay's offense but that isn't the style the Chargers play. He will waste his career like Philip Rivers did if Herbert stays with the Chargers.

Also, can't quite wrap my head around Henderson for DC. Correct me if I'm wrong but Dline coaches rarely get that promotion (Marinelli, maybe?) and you often want a guy who looks at the D more holistically like a defensive backs coach. Just haven't heard a word about Henderson having talent beyond coaching the Dline and think he's done a fine job but neither amazing nor horrible. Donald skews things positively of course.
Good points there as most DC's come from being linebacker coach or secondary coach, but I do know that they have had Henderson call the defensives during preseason games, so if the Rams don't promote him and Morris becomes a Head Coach, I bet he takes Henderson with him as his DC.

I thought he was going to be a great Head Coach, he was a defensive coach that was a college quarterback, which I thought was a unique combination. Plus I liked his aggressiveness in his first year, going for the 1st down on 4th & short. However, after being an upper tier DC for the Rams, he could not fix that side of the ball for the Chargers. The defense that had talent, gave up big plays and last year in his first playoff game, which should have been an easy win resulted in a total collapse, which did not wear off in 2023.

Not sure where the Chargers go from here and I would not want Staley back as DC, if Morris leaves for whatever reason, promote DL Coach Eric Henderson, he has earned it.

If he was coaching the Panthers, he would've been fired at half time.

There have been coaches who did a lot worse in their first HC look. I'm sure he learned a ton. Probably should have stuck with McVay for another couple seasons and learned from him too.

Wherever he lands as a DC will get a good coach. Wondering if he'll try his luck back in college taking over a program. If I was in his shoes building a college program would be attractive. Either way always struck me as a good dude, but that won't pay the bills, so best of luck to him unless he lands with a division rival.

Doesn't really matter what they do.

Spanos is a turd, and management is shit.

The showgirl got lucky with Vermiel and Warner/Faulk, but Rams were shit before and after, till Kroenke took over.

There are posters here that have to eat crow with you. I remember someone stating that he would have a better career than McVay when it’s all said and done. I was thinking “McVay went to the Super Bowl his second year. Bro needs to win a playoff game first”

Staley might have been a victim or example of the Peter principle. I'm sure he will find a gig as DC again. He is now on the Spagnuolo career track. Best of luck to him.

Spagnola comes to mind
As bad as he was, he took over a defense that was ranked between 31 & 32 worst in a couple seasons prior to his arrival, and he had them ranked #12 in his 2nd year. He sucked and all, but had less to work with and still did a "better" job

He's put talent on the field...I think this mess was pretty much all the coach.
He helped pick said coach. Also the talent he put on the field is always hurt. I'm not absolving Staley in any way. But Telasco is absolutely part of the problem.

Under Shanahan the Niners have dealt with injury issues seemingly ever year.

Do we think Lynch is a bad GM?

I don't rate him at the top end personally. I think a lot of their hits have been due to little rats influence on the draft. And I think drafting and signing free agents with injury histories is always a risk and a blemish on the GMs record. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

I'm simply applying the same standard to Telasco and Lynch as I do to Snead.

Staley, Spags, and Schwartz... 3 terrible HC's but very good DCs.
Lot of names on that list too. You could include our own Wade Phillips, or even a douchebag like Zimmer. And a lot of them do quite well when they get booted out of that HC role and go back to where they belong.

Wondering how many HC changes we will have this year. But there should be no shortage of new staffs for your better coordinators to choose from. And as a DC you know most of the jobs will probably be guys from the other side of the ball.
