I will say this, it was a great hit and I'm not sure it should have warranted a penalty. My only point as to if it "was" or "wasn't" a penalty would be how can an official make a judgement call when the trajectory of two players changes in a split second. I would say the same thing if it was a seahawks player making the same play on a Rams receiver. This is another reason where judgement of a rule, by officials, has deteriorated the game. This game is violent, and the players accept it when they play. I understand some of these rules are there to protect players. I get that, but in this instance an official made a judgement call to throw a penalty when both player's momentum, etc. changed in a split second. Does anyone really think Tru, or any other player for that matter, would be able to change his angle in the blink of an eye? It looked like a "bang-bang play." IMO there are too many rules asking the referees to make too many judgement calls.

I agree and believe this is the result to having far too many rules. Football is played so fast and we get the benefit of slow motion replays. The players don't. They react. Football is a violent game and the league is trying to make it not. It's impossible and it's ruining the game.

You have to leave discretion with the ref. That will lead to a better called game in most instances.

They can definitely clean that up and have defended characteristics for what a catch is.

Except that his helmet glanced off the shoulder pad. He did not go for helmet to helmet. Asking tru to somehow tweak his neck to avoid contact from his helmet at that angle is simply not realistic. I'm not particularly surprised by the call but it was a bad call.
I would like to see the hit again. It seemed close to me to not being a penalty. Tru seemed to just graze his face mask. I'm 50/50 on the hit rules. It's getting harder to watch but safer for players overall. Players are going out of games at seemingly high rates. I don't know if they could survive the NFL played in previous decades with the size and athleticism of players today.
If anyone has a replay would like to see it. As I recall I initially thought not to much of a hit, but the replay showed solid contact, not just a glancing blow...
You can't launch and use the crown of the helmet, pretty much ever. Only time it is ok to duck the head is within the tackle box (as that article outlines). Contact to the head/neck area is strictly prohibited when talking about players in the process of making a catch and QBs. Doesn't matter if its facemask, crown, shoulder, or anything else when the primary contact point is the receivers head/neck. Had tru smacked the guy with a shoulder, or even chest if he would come in high (like he had to break up the pass) it was going to be called since the TE was still deemed a "defenseless receiver"
Terrible calls are being made on the targeting rule. This one today is a bad one. Personally, I'd like to see the QB slide eliminated. If you are a QB and decide to run, get down the best way you can because you are now a RB. Sliding is not the best way. Too many QBs like Russell are elusive enough to make defenders have to come full bull at them and they are expected to defy gravity and momentum to avoid hitting them when they do the puss dive at the last second. Play football damn it all!!!

Man if rugby league players tackled like that they'd be knocked out cold. What all nfl teams need are league coaches to teach the players how to tackle properly. Shoulder in, head to the side, wrap arms after contact. So simple yet so hard.

Were the Christians volunteers? Last time I checked nobody was forcing these guys to play football.
And with the pressure over safety the rules are only going to go this way more. Some fans may not like it but with the press and the pressure from retired players defensive coordinators are going to have to adapt. Ultra aggressive D's not to tackle properly or they are just going to get more and more of these calls, and the reputation such brings (which only makes matters worse).
It is simple if you are looking at the ground when you "tackle" your head is down and you are risking the call. Heck this how we are hurting our own guys on some plays. I still say want guys to tackle right bring in LF and have him train them...man knew how to tackle.
They already have those. That's why they got rid on endzone celebrations and added all those other unsportsmanlike penalties.
