I actually think Tavon will have more room to work with Cooks than he did with Sammy because I think safeties will be even further out of the box.
Couple that with all the things McVay can do with Gurley and...
I'm still saying that this offense could score 40 points a game with everyone in the playbook. I mean, when your X isn't in the playbook... enough that more than halfway into the season, he still wasn't sure where to line up... that's not optimal.
Yeah, we tried to re-sign him because of his deep speed and the HOPE that he'd get into the playbook.
NONE of that's an issue with Cooks.
He started in the NFL in Payton's WCO which is pretty similar to McVay's. And we KNOW Cooks is football smart because he balled out in the EP offense which is crazy hard for WRs due to all the options post-snap.
Honestly, as I apply my pattern skills to this... Cooks is the BEST fit in this scenario and might just be the best fit for this role IN THE ENTIRE NFL.
Better as a fit than Julio, OBJ, DeAndre Hopkins...
Woods is significantly faster than people thought (as that TD on the 3rd and 33 proved when he smoked the entire D, making them look like they were standing still) and an INCREDIBLE route runner.
Kupp is also faster than people thought AND he's probably the best pure route runner to come out of college in more than a few years.
Cooks is crazy fast AND is a complete route running WR who creates separation simply with the fear of his speed. He drove the CB corps of Jax crazy.
What does all of this mean for Tavon???
Well, we know who are top 3 WRs are. So, this should really help because I think if McVay gives Tavon a few more touches like on the jet sweep (and especially if he gets the right setup so Tavon gets an important 1st down or makes a long play to extend a drive), then the entire D is loose. They can't tighten on ANYONE.
Our toughest games are at home (Vikes, Eagles and KC in Mexico City...not all guys travel well and...the water...) and only the Saints on the road give me a hint of concern.
I think, honestly, 12-4 is our floor if we execute and stay healthy.
I think Tavon will play a small, but important role in that.
And as we saw when he had that 300+ yard game, if a team sleeps on him, he's to the house in a second.
