Let me start this thread by saying, Mr Brandon Staley , I am a fan !!

Our defense seems to be getting better by the week. AD has been off the charts.

If he is not sacking the QB, he is providing tremendous push funneling the QB into the waiting arms of our OLB's and DE's.

Rams are tied for first in sacks with 20 and allowing the third lowest QBR in the league at 81.3

Jimmy! Jimmy!........................... Jimmy, Why are you under the bench, Jimmy?

I have gathered some other Defensive stats for those interested.

Sacks

3rd in points allowed per game.

They've been very good and Staley and his boys are silencing some of his critics. That said we've played 1 good team and 2 iffy teams 2 shitty teams. The real test is still to come.

He's done a great job. Bad teams but to be a good defense you gotta shut down bad teams. Worried about Fuller at this point a bit, as we look different with him out. But yeah we're off to a great start. (y)

Sure would be nice to see this defense shut down the whiners. Even with the scrub at QB.

IMHO Darious Williams has been the best surprise so far.

Made THE play vs Eagles with that diving INT in end zone to stop their momentum.

Made THE play (what should have been!!!) vs. Bills, played good tight coverage on the critical 4th down play (but the receiver plowed into him and he got jobbed with a bad call)

Made THE game-sealing play vs. NYG with that gorgeous, acrobatic stab for the INT.

When chips are down, Williams seems to come up big

Yeah no doubt. He's the story this season, along with Fuller I think. But Williams is so consistent man. He's legit.

I think the best thing that could happen right now, aside from health of course, would be one of these guys stepping up to play nickel. Ramsey's been used in the nickel in part because he's the best option. But ideally as a base look we have him and Williams shuttin it down outside and allowing the Rams to focus on the middle.

So I'm disappointed in Long tbh. Not beating out Hill is a bad sign. And Burgess is possible too I suppose but he looks like his head is spinning on some plays especially when he ends up over the top. Maybe the slot would be a good way to get him on the field, and if that were to happen our run defense would get a really nice bump.

I have to disagree there. We pretty much all wanted him to be the starter opposite Ramsey. We knew he was a good corner that made plays.

Fuller is the biggest surprise by far. Nobody saw him coming on like he did. And as the Bills game showed he is a vital piece of the d. The dbs looked like headless chickens without him at the back there directing traffic.

Two good offensive teams.
Dallas 3rd Buffalo 5th in league in scoring offense.
But yea it will get tougher.

To be fair a lot of Dallas is trash time when they're getting their butts kicked but yes they've put up numbers.

Can't wait to see how we fair against 49ers oline next week.
They have been a train wreck up front.
Not that I think it will be a true test of our D
But just for the joy of watching it happen.lol

Long got a decent number of snaps against Washington. So maybe Staley has him on the radar screen now.

Did the whiners sign a new QB? I thought all they had was scrubs at QB.

I dunno, back in August a lot of ppl were focusing on Ramsey and Hill as starters, with Long (and maybe Burgess) penciled in at the slot. Not everyone was sold on Williams winning a starting spot.

I was “cautiously optimistic” about Williams, but there were definitely valid reasons to be skeptical. After all the guy was an undersized (5’9”), undrafted guy from UAB, not even a D-1 school, and he’d only had a couple of starts in his whole career. Yeah, he looked good in the last 2 games of 2019, but that was hardly enough evidence to say he was a slam-dunk starter.

No doubt Fuller wins the award for “biggest positive surprise” on D. But IMHO Williams has surpassed even my most optimistic expectations. I hoped he could be good, but I didn’t expect him to have so many “Wow” plays as a second year starter. That pick vs. the Giants was sick. (Love the last camera angle in the highlight below). Amazing body control, terrific closing speed, great hands. Dude looks freaking legit.

Yeah, Fuller and Williams for me too. (y)

Every time you turn around, they seem to jump out with a play.

It’s been nice having Johnson back too!

The whole back end has been everything we hoped. Ramsey has delivered, etc. All of them.

For me, early in each game I’m curious how we align with the pass rush and run stopping. Not as worried about stopping the pass.

While this is true, you also have to consider that we held the Giants (tied), FT and Cowboys to their lowest point totals of the season, and the Eagles to their 2nd lowest. On the flip side, the Bills scored their highest output of us on the season, but if the DPI isn't called, it's their 2nd lowest, and really more like their lowest because they let up on the Jets in week one.

Oh absolutely proud of the way the D has played. But there are better offenses on the horizon, look forward to shutting them down too.

The only issue I have with Williams is he tends to often miss tackles. Otherwise he is an awesome cover cornerback so far.

I re-watched the Washington game last night.

Now, I knew the Rams’ defense was dominant in the second half; and, I know Washington has limited offensive talent, and Alex Smith was playing for the first time in almost two years, and it was raining hard and windy.

I really do get all that. However, Washington had seven offensive possessions in the second half, and totaled minus six yards.

Minus Six Yards.

Williams is a slingshot CB. Once a WR makes a move, he fights hard to recover. His two terrific INTs occurred when the pass attempts were slightly late and behind the WR. The next thing he needs to work on is staying with his guy throughout the entire route.
