I like to think about the effect on defenses when ranking offensive players. My ranks..

Tyreek Hill - nobody since Randy moss and Calvin Johnson effects coverages like he does.

Devante Adams - The amount of times everyone knows it's coming to him.. yet it is still effective. Plus he really hasn't had anyone who pulls attention away.

Cooper Kupp - similar to Adams.. you know it's coming. But does that matter? I think Kupp sees a little less attention than Adams since he's had better weapons around him.

Deebo Samuel.. pure offensive weapon that can play anywhere, which makes him really difficult to scheme for. If he played only RB he'd probably still be in the top 10 at that position.

DeAndre Hopkins.. nobody just goes up and gets it better than he does. Look at Arizona's offense with and without him.

Stefan Diggs.. lightning quick. Buffalo has some young deep options in the pass game but nobody else that dictates coverage. Their unbelievably explosive pass game runs through him.

Clark saying what I've been saying... people on this board even do it. Compare him to other white receivers because he is white.

The receiver Kupp reminds me the most is Jerry Rice - nearly the same size and speed exactly - both with reliable hands and great RAC.

Rice didnt play in the slot much - but nowadays receivers play all over.,,, its different.
I remember when Cooper was drafted, and I saw how he broked many of Jerry's collegiate records I called him the "white Jerry Rice."

Relevant to the thread? Yes.

What were all thinking? Yes.

Potentially divisive? Probably.

But props to Ryan Clark:

I don't think it's divisive. Comparison to Fitzgerald is apt, as is recognition that Kupp may be an even better route runner (though Fitz had many other strengths). Kupp is one of best route runners of all time and one of the best in creating separation through his cuts.

He left Diggs and AJ Brown off there as well along with Jefferson, Chase etc. Definitely some great talent out there.
Athletically Kupp may net be in a top 5 list but he was the most productive WR this year and I'm thinking he will be again next year.
What are you calling athletic?

His RAC and yards after contact put him at the top of being athletic.

Combine measurables do not equal athletic.

Shannon sharpe made this exact point, as well as a few others. If Kupp was black they’d be all over him, but since he’s white there is very much a bias.

Now they say they want to change things regarding opportunities for different race HC’s but then completely dismissing Kupp because of his skin tone is acceptable????! That’s why I can’t none of this shit seriously, very one sided and hypocritical.

Triple Crown, OPOY, Super Bowl MVP and setting a dozen new NFL records for receivers makes you the top player at your position. Route running, hands, run blocking, yards after catch, there's nothing Kupp doesn't do at the highest level. There's a reason no one could stop him.

Jones will eventually cross the finish line too, just a lot of horses got there before him.

You’re comparing a receiver to just one list saying he’s not top 5 to Many AA men and women and other minorities not getting a fair chance at a JOB. When the nfl is over 75percent black. But let’s also not forget that black men can’t be a QB argument either. That has only recently started to change. Every black running QB gets compared to Mike Vick instead of joe Montana! Only rodgers get that sentiment.

Kupp is definitely a top 5 receiver in my biased eyes he were even before this season and I see Isaac Bruce in him all day long. That’s the same thing Bruce said about him too. So yes there are gonna be people not sure where to put him because historically he’s doing what no other white receiver has done the same thing with Christian mccafferty.

The nfl has a lot of work to do. Just like society.

There's another reason other than race that keeps Kupp understimated that I haven't seen mentioned yet.

And it's that other WRs just have flashier highlights.

Other players like DHop have those spectacular tough, contested catches or one handed grabs with guys draped all over them. Or WRs like Hill, Chase, Deebo, etc. eliminating angles and running past guys like they're standing still. Kupp's highlights look a little more mundane just because all of his catches are WIDE OPEN and it has almost nothing to do with speed. And not because defenses are just somehow forgetting about the guy leading every single receiving statistic, but a combination of Kupp knowing every defender's responsibility even better than they do on any given play and how to exploit their weaknesses at exactly the right moment. Combined with insanely quick feet which keeps defenders on skates both before and after the catch and make him hard to tackle and you start to see why this guy is the best WR in the NFL despite not being the most physically gifted.

I love Kupp, and there is no doubt he is the best this year, but he came out of nowhere this year. He has always been solid and clutch, but this year has stunned people. No one saw this coming. He will have to have a few more great years for him to prove himself to the mainstream. Many people probably think it was a perfect storm, a one-year wonder. It's okay, he will continue to produce at an elite level and the Rams are lucky to have him.

The record breaking year, sure.

But he had 1200 yards and 10 TDs in 2019 and was on pace for that in 2018 before getting hurt.

He's been disrespected that entire team.

The problem is it’s not just one list, it’s list after list with the creator of the lists being AA. You can’t tell me if this was switched that you wouldn’t have an outpouring calling the presenter racist if things were completely opposite with only listing white WR’s and leaving off a black WR who had the best season a WR has EVER had. But it’s okay if the opposite holds true.

You’re right, there are things that need to be improved but discrediting someone because of the color of their skin regardless of their ability or quality of volume of work they performed and a lot of what happened back in the 50s- 60s as a whole.

Speaking of jobs and getting equal opportunities, The Rooney Rule is a racist rule by concept since it only considers race and not ability which is racist by definition. Now the rule that was intended to create diversification is just a check box teams have to check before hiring who their going to hire anyways.

Also, if we are going to follow this way of thought of 75percent of the NFL is AA so 75% of HC, FO, and Owners need to be AA? That’s absolutely discriminatory and the whole concept behind that thought is completely racist.

If that’s the case we need to have the NFL reflect the exact percentages what the nation is to include opportunity, diversication, and inclusion.
So here we go:
60% white
18% Hispanic
12%AA
5% Asian
.07% Native American.

If a team doesn’t meet this criteria they are forced to give up all draft picks the following year and be hit with a 100 million dollars against the cap. This is a good idea right? Let’s force diversification. Where do we stop this mindless insanity that only focuses on race or ethnicity and doesn’t consider ability or experience.

Not going to argue cause I can't, but this season was way beyond what anybody expected. I believe he will have more unbelievable seasons and be recognized for his talent. We shouldn't be out raged by this. He broke NCAA records and still nobody believed.

Keep in mind the bias about Kupp was held by white scouts and front offices as well. We all have our biases. Me for instance, I have a problem with shortness in players unless they are RB and AD. That doesn't mean there are not exceptions to my bias. The HC issue is a totally different animal and should not be part of this discussion. Kupps whiteness didn't keep him from being a receiver.

Kupp is at the top of athleticism in all areas except for top speed. And like Rice he has enough speed to get the job done.
His quickness, strength, hands, and smarts are all top shelf! And then add in his blocking!
