And no Higbee is not 100x a better blocker than Hopkins. He may have been years ago. But whether it was by injury or whatever, not last year.

I think your under estimating Higbee.Doesn’t matter though now,because The Rams have a solid TE group competing.
The cool thing is is its going to make him a better all round TE.

Gesicki? That isnt who he couldnt get on the field over. Durham Smythe, Cethan Carter and last year's UDFA rookie Tanner Conner all saw the field over him
Not only could he not see the field, he didnt even dress for half the games last year. Being an inline TE playing for a coach who runs 12 and he cant even be active for ST? Straight trash
At the time of the trade, Conner was the only TE under contract.

He wasnt behind Gesicki. It was 2nd coaching staff who both run predominantly 12 set and he is the inline guy. Lost his PT to an UDFA who at the time of the trade was the only TE on the roster. You trade a 3rd rounder when the pick is a bust

Long's explanation:
“I came into kind of a tricky situation. I came into a tight end room that already had five tight ends, and three established tight ends,” Long said. “As a rookie, my role was with a rookie role and kind of plugged in where I could and do I what could. This last year, I definitely carved out a bigger role for myself. Unfortunately, dealt with some injuries early on, and kind of picked up steam later in the season when I was able to get over those injuries. I was definitely in more of a blocking role this year, but that was not because I can’t run routes and catch the ball, you know? I’m as team-guy as they come, and whatever the team needs to do to win games and help the team be successful, I’m gonna do and do to the best of my ability. So that’s all I was asked to do, and I tried to excel at that, but that’s obviously not my whole game.”

If Hunter Long is as bad as your say, then why would the Rams (with their new TE Coach) have ASKED for him to be a part of the trade package?

BTW, I still waiting to hear your opinion on how Hopkins looked in the Super Bowl?

Miami had Smythe, Long, Conner and Gesicki who clearly is a receiving TE. The other 3? Anyway here's the G/GS/Snap counts for Miami TEs in 2022.

Smythe (4th Rd-2018) 16 G, 15 GS, 557 snaps
Gesicki (2nd Rd-2018) 17 G, 1 GS, 478 snaps
Long (3rd Rd-2021) 9 G, 0 GS, 93 snaps
Conner (UDFA-2022) 13 G, 0 GS, 25 snaps

Now Gesicki, Long and Conner are gone and Miami has 3 TEs under contract. Smythe (75 rec last 3 years), Saubert (4 teams in 6 years; 395 snaps last year with 33 receptions the last 5 years) and Tyler Kroft (42 receptions the last 5 years). It could be Miami doesn't know how to evaluate or use TEs. Or maybe they didn't prior to McDaniels arrrival. Who knows but Long didn't do much in 2 years.

Great question. Why would they ask for him? Sounds like he was a throw in. The more accurate question is why would Miami give up a 3rd rounder with only an udfa on the roster at same position? With 1 catch in 2 years, seems the pretty obvious answer
Hopkins in the SB? Good grief. He was their last option after being passed over by every other choice they had and Cincy didnt pay him any mind. If the SB performance meant anything, he would have followed that up with production in '22. He did not.
If 1 game wonders meant anything, then why not pine for Kendall Blanton?

Great question that didn't get answered. But the answer to your question is that they really wanted Ramsey.

Hopkins in 2022? My guess? He got suspended for the first 3 games and fell into the doghouse, Higbee was able to play, and the Rams might have run 11 personnel probably more team has ever run it.

What's ironic about our "debate" here, is that I have been begging for an upgrade at TE for several years now. I find it perplexing that McVay cut his teeth in the Shanny system as a tight end coach, yet hasnt incorporated either an h-back and/or an inline TE which is a key cog in the Shanahan running game.
I thought we might be headed in that direction with how he used Skow, and maybe Allen can be more of a hand in the dirt type guy, which could leave Higs to have a bit more free reign in the hopes of seeing the receiving threat he was at the end of 2019
All that said, I dont see anything in Hopkins that leads me to believe he could be the guy. And if Higbee being in the last year of his contract is a deterant, its even moreso with Hop in the last year of his. Can save 1 mill of cap space by cutting him vs saving 3+ mill cutting Higbee

As for the Miami trade and that "they really wanted Ramsey", that's some serious spin doctoring if you're insinuating that Miami was the one pulling out all the stops to make it work. Rams were over a barrel on that deal, Miami had all the leverage. If anything, Long was in the deal as a take it or leave it deal since he clearly had no future on that team

It was reported that the Rams wanted a 3rd and a player for Ramsey (maybe they wanted another pick but weren't going to get it). Long was both a guy who they had a 3rd round grade on in his draft and had had a horrible start to his career on a team that was constantly looking for a Y tight end (Giseki can't block for sh*t). Absent someone better, why wouldn't the Rams take a flyer on a guy who they liked in the draft. Chances are it won't work out. But to assume that Long is anything more than a longshot (which still means there's a small chance he could work out!) just seems real pie in the sky.

Here's hoping the change of scenery does him well, not holding my breath.

Again, the Rams asked for Long.

We need our younger guys to step the F up. No telling how much longer we will have Higs, and as of lately the consistency has been lacking. Though I do appreciate him as a Ram and what he has contributed. We just need insurance at our TE group.

Curious if anybody seen those gifs of those plays and Higbee didn’t do as well as the the writer makes him out to be to make a point?

Look at the second gif lol
Higbee arm fights the safety for a bit and his guy goes ándales the tackle stopping the RB at the second level.

The writer then says “ Those second level blocks don’t always end up mattering, but when they do, they create big plays. Higbee consistently gets onto his man at the next level.”

Absolutely tired of these trash ass wannabe sports writers that are normal fucking people who don’t know fuck all about the game and act arrogant like they know their asshole from their elbow. That goes with some arrogant fucks on message boards who know very little about playing our coaching and proclaim to be an expert about anything and everything. It’s laughable at best.
