I think Goff has the makings to be great but yes I heard on nfl network that Goff completes 43% of his passes when pressured which is near the bottom or bottom of the league.

I did find this - from last year (you can read what they say about Goff specifically).

So I'd say there is evidence to support the OP's perspectives.

But he is young so it's reasonable to assume he is only going to improve from here on out.
So a chart from 2017 backs up his point? Also on the chart Brees is way down on the list which is kinda confusing

Funny I thought he was great in the pocket and feeling the pressure. Every QB has plays were a sack happens fast or they don’t feel it coming. One of his better attributes is standing tall in the pocket in the face of pressure to complete a passs.

He trusts his Oline when he's sanding tall in the pocket, and he should play that way. Only thing I'd wish he'd do in the midst of defensive traffic, start holding on to the ball with both hands if he's running which probably means he's going to get sacked if he's scrambling. He tends to cough up the ball when he gets hit from a blind side in traffic. A lot of QB's do, but I hold my breath when I see someone coming and he doesn't quite see it,, and I scream to the tv "hold it!"

See the problem with that stat is what is pressure. Is it when he gets hit or when they just short of hitting him or is it when they make him move or is it when he has to run? I see him completing passes with guys in his face or right at his side or he has to change his spot or angle that he is throwing from and he has a high percentage of completion. So I think the stat is BS. He can't possibly be completing 65% of his passes and not have a high percentage of completions with pressure around him. I've seen it. Throwing on the run, well he might be less than 50%, but that stat is crap.

As I watched this video, only one thought came to my mind . . . if only Jared Goff had better pocket presence. ;)

It's a team sport. His lineman could have shouted "run, run, run" when the protection is busted. Why don't the coaches tell that to the OL?
Then other teams would be yelling run run run

I wouldn't mind seeing him run more often. Keep them wheels nice and warm this Sunday!

The guy is a superb passer, reads defenses nicely, and knows where to go with the ball.

He has been really good at everything except using his legs to escape the pressure. In many cases I think its because his focus downfield blinds him to where the pressure is.

I see it too often...3 times in the Lions game, where he clearly was too focused downfield and simply didn't feel the pressure.

I hope McVay is going over this with him...AND...that Goff himself sees this on tape.

We know he has very good mobility... but as I see it, he doesn't use it enough...and I think he's gonna need it against the Bears!

IMHO as a nonprofessional QB evaluator i think he has good pocket awareness for a simple reason that i.ve rarely seen Goff take a sack while just standing there in the pocket.

if anything, most sack often happen when he feels the initial pressure and he either side or steps up in the pocket.

Now what I noticed ..specially with his last sack/fumble, is that he usually he takes one or two shuffles steps to avoid the rush.. however, most sacks have been when he takes that third or more shuffle ( hence- that could fall under holding on to the ball too long).

Regardless, I would like to see Goff more decisive against the Bears … anything more than 2 shuffles and if receiver not open just tuck the ball with 2 hands and run up field and give your O another chance.

Goff can run. He’s got some wheels. I would like to see him throw on the run like the pass to Reynolds against the Lions.

He's doing just fine for a 3rd year QB.

There it is. To me you can throw out his rookie season. I don't know what anyone could learn from that coaching staff. 24 years old. 34 career starts. 27 under McVay. I haven't seen a perfect 24 year old QB. But he's pretty darn good.

That's all I'm saying. Seems some are taking my post as a knock. Clearly Goff is excellent...but that doesn't mean he doesn't have room to improve...and pocket pressure awareness is where I think he can do better...as well as using his legs to escape pressure and gash a defense for about 10-20 yds.

I agree 100%

Goff does have a few weaknesses' when he is in a crowded close backfield with defenders pawing @ him. Remember early this year in the pro bowl? Lost the game for the NFC due to this weakness. He continues to have big issues securing the ball in traffic. Another issue for him .....slow in recognizing when he needs to throw the ball away. He usually takes the sack when there is plenty of time to make that throw out of bounds, thus a punt will soon follow. Fact is Goff will always need a very good OL to win, true for most QB's but especially Goff.

Goff had such great protection early in the year that I think he expects it. His downfield focus is amazing. He can wait till the last split second to make a big pass completion while a big hit is coming. He slide steps pressure without missing a beat that it looks nonchalant. Sometimes the pressure comes from more than one side which makes it difficult to escape. Sometimes it's just hard to throw the ball away with limited vision and space. At that point protecting the ball is paramount. He needs to work on ball security.

Thanks for making my point in part of your post.

There's that "clock in the head" he seems to not have at times as well as peripheral vision...and that's what leads to sacks. If he really sees and feels those sacks, he would secure the ball!!! This is a fact some don't want to accept as an area to improve...and I conclude that it's because he doesn't feel the pressure.

Perhaps he will with time...and that's the good part...he has that time.
