I would feel better with Jimmy G as the backup. Maybe they wait til after week 1 to avoid the guaranteed contract.

I think they have an agreement that if he doesn’t get a gig he’ll re-sign.
Be foolish right now to do anything other than waiting for an opportunity to arise. They often do

For the Rams, it’s ideal they get a long look at Simpson before signing JG.

If he’s playing the waiting game (for a PS injury around the league) we probably can’t afford him.

And really, it would be ideal to have Jimmy there to help develop Simpson. Stafford will be a great influence, but he will be busy quarterbacking the team this year. So having a vet back up, being able to talk with Simpson during practice and games would be very valuable.

That’s a good point. I don’t know how good JG is at being a coach like that?

Simpson? Garopolo would replace Bennett. Ideal sitch this year is a quasi redshirt Simpson. If Garoppolo is still a FA come week 1, he’d be plenty affordable

I may be in the minority on this one, but I'm inclined to roll with MS, Bennett, and Ty.

Just not sure that JG is worth the extra 4 mill it would take to sign him over Bennett.

Bennett won two Natty's and he's been in the system for a while now. And Ty has tons of potential.

With AD probably coming back, cap $ is gonna be tight.

But as always I trust McVay to make the right decision

oh wait wait wait -- yesssssssssssssssss:

went from the Orange to the Brown... :D
Wow! He hit 805 of 105 FGs. Impressive.

Well, after 7 years in college and 3 now in the NFL, if Bennett hasnt taken the reigns yet, he likely never will.
Could be that he has and thats why JG wasnt a priority, TC will tell a lot

Agree a perfect world he sits a year. Is it possible he is the #2 by end of camp?
The way I see it, and this is all my own speculation/assumption, McVay wants a "#2" who knows the system & can run the team in practice efficiently. That way they can limit Stafford's snaps/throws etc and work more with Simpson on getting up to speed on NFL level.

Hopefully Simpson will be killing it all year running the scout team, and being hard to stop. So if he ends up as the QB3 it's no big deal, he can still make a name for himself by roasting the starting defense.

My guess is the Rams are good with either QB winning the competition. Just let them sort it out. Now if they feel like neither are quite good enough, then they'll make that move to add the vet but if they do that it mainly means Bennett's toast. So yeah the translation in all this seems to indicate they are at least giving Bennett some rope in camp. But McVay doesn't fuck around with his QBs so we'll see how long that lasts.

I wouldn't consider JG until we have sign the boys we have now in Preseason action, or at least a week of TC. If we are in fact signing AD, we don't have room for JG's salary. I'd take AD of JG, especially when you consider they glowing speak they have for Bennett. Who knows, kid could have developed into an adequate back up.

Money will not be an issue in signing any of the guys due extension, signing AD or Garoppolo if they want any of them or all of them.
As for Bennett, I havent heard anything that indicates they see him more than bench fodder for the time being
