Letter of the law says no physical contact past 5 yards this year. Not to mention he was playing the man, not the ball, didn't even know where the football was.

Nah, he had his head around. He was playing the ball. And now that I think about it, the ball was in the air before the 5 yard mark so no illegal contact.
