Times have changed. Despite a significantly smaller population at the time, the finale of MASH had nearly 6 times the viewership. Heck, regular episodes of MASH had higher viewership. And, as you pointed out - the NFL gets higher viewership often for even non-Super Bowl events, though not always.

The difference is HBO only has 54 million subscribers (2017 stats) where conventional network TV can reach over 400 million domestic viewers. In the future, if you want to watch higher quality productions, you will have to pay for it more directly.

As River points out at that time everybody had network tv. Not the case with HBO. Also what were there 4 channels when MASH was on instead of 1400? Apples to Oranges.

True. But the MASH finale had a higher share of TVs overall and a higher share of people watching TV at the time than Game of Thrones had a percentage of HBO subscribers actually watching.

Don't get me wrong - GoT was a big success in its finale. But nowhere close to the finale of MASH. Not even in the same zip code. Even with the changes in the system, it did not get the percentage of viewers that MASH had.

Yeah, but I've seen a bunch of comments online about it being the most watched TV show ever. And not even close, not in numbers, not in share. And in fact, the share was higher for MASH's finale than among HBO viewers for GoT's finale. And nearly 6 times as many viewers, despite the viewing population being much smaller.

Don't get me wrong - GoT was a huge success. Just some seem to exaggerate that success.

Perhaps, but with HBO, you don't have to watch a show at only a specified time like a network program, you can either stream it at any time you choose with HBOGO, or watch any number of the many repeat showings on a different day or different time. The stats you are using are likely only considering the Sunday premier date & time. Either way, I loved both Mash & GOT, but in the future, expect the emerging Pay TV streaming giant-size mega media studios like Disney, Netflix, AT&T (Time-Warner-HBO), Amazon Prime, etc.) to produce more original content which will air first on their own service outlets prior to reaching those free TV networks at a much later date. Hell, the only thing I watch on network TV anymore is college & NFL football, otherwise they are useless to me now.
I subscribe to DirectNow, Netflix, HBONOW, HBOGO & Amazon Prime and pay about 1/3 what I used to pay for Direct TV with HBO, Showtime & Sunday Ticket, why would anyone want to watch 14 minutes worth of commercials for every 30 minutes worth of programming ? Cutting the cable and streaming everything was a great move for me. jmo.

What do they mean by watching it live?

I stream with HBO Now and can't start watching until about 3-5 minutes after 9PM... so technically not live I guess?

Mash series finale had almost 106 million viewers

GOT was less than 1/5 of that, 13.6 mill watched the "live" feed and than number jumps to 19.3 with replays and streaming

Still and all though, its apples to oranges. Back in 83 the choices were so limited, literally had only a handful of channels to watch and nobody was airing anything against MASH. I vividly recall watching that finale with the family and my parents weren't even fans of the show.
On a side note, never could understand how they knew who was watching. We still watched tv with rabbit ears in those days as only 2 rooms in my parents house had cable....

In an effort to avoid fan theories and such, I stayed away from the internet while watching the final season. There were certainly a handful of things that made no sense to me, and I was disappointed by the very bland dialogue and stale writing, but I can't say I was upset by any means. I know it's not uncommon for great shows to end on a low note.

After reading a lot of the criticism out there, I've come to realize just how badly the writers butchered the final season. They squandered sooooooo much potential it makes me laugh inside just thinking about the public ridicule they will face for probably the rest of their careers. I hope for their sake they lack the "give a f*cks" that should come with transforming into a lifelong meme joke.
