The Rams played a tough game, but lost their 2012 season opener 27-23 to the Lions in Detroit. Sam Bradford tossed a go ahead TD pass to Brandon Gibson early in the 4th quarter to put St. Louis ahead 20-13. But the Lions rallied for two scores, including the winning touchdown with just ten seconds remaining in the game.
Lions QB Matthew Stafford threw a five yard TD pass to Kevin Smith to seal the victory for Detroit.
The Rams also got a pick six interception return for touchdown by Cortland Finnegan, one of three interceptions by the Rams defense on the day. Rookie kicker Greg Zuerlein was 3 for 3 in field goals in his NFL debut. Rams left tackle Rodger Saffold was injured in the fourth quarter and had to be carted off on a stretcher. Saffold was not moving after the collision with a Lions defender. But later at the hospital, Saffold had regained movement in all of his limbs.
