A decent QB is what this team has been lacking to take that next step.I'm in the group that thinks Fisher is out of touch with todays game. His playcalling can be somewhat vanilla at times very predictable. Now if Goff or Wentz are decent Qbs i would expect for that to change. If he does then we should be good with an improved o-line and Gurley 100%.If he doesn't then we will know for sure that he's stuck in a different era.

Curious, what do you think "today's game" is? The pass-obsession? Because if you are all pass, that becomes predictable too. I.E., Saints, Colts, Packers, etc. As great as the QBs and WRs are on those teams, defenses focus on them and can control them. But if Eddie Lacy and Mark Ingram are rolling, it becomes even harder. I can't even name a Colt RB off the top of my head.

Jeff Fisher came here in part b/c of Sam Bradford. That alone should tell you he's not "out of touch."

The Rams were 3-1 vs Seartle and Arizona and 4-8 vs the rest of their schedule. Or 4-2 inside the toughest division and 3-7 outside. The Rams didn't play the weak teams well so playing an easier schedule doesn't change things.
I truly didn't intend to be counterpoint to your thread but can't make excuses for O'Brien success either
I know you didn't. My main point was that we were within striking distance of a 13-3 season with better QB play. How other teams did in different situations isn't really entirely relevant to my point. O'Brien's QBs played well against inferior competition, so he can be commended for that. I don't think he's a bad coach at all either. I mean, even if we had Hoyer, we would have won a few of our games that were lost. Saying he had 4 different QBs is doing a disservice to some of those QBs. Everything unraveled when Foles unraveled, and it was too late once Keenum was installed. If I can find fault in anything about Fisher last year, i can say that he was a little late to pull the plug on Foles. But when you make that kind of investment, and you see how well he does in practice, sometimes you let your faith linger a little longer than you should. But again, moot point now. We're gonna end up with someone who could quickly become superior to anything we've had on the roster in the last decade +.

It's not his playcalling though. As I've demonstrated, his *philosophy* is balanced offense with an emphasis on clock control. Like others have suggested, if he's able to find the right coordinator (and maybe Boras is that guy), then his balanced offense will simply result in more points. And more points last year in about 6 games means about 6 more wins. If we went 13-3 last year, would anyone have a problem with his playcalling? I mean, look at the playcalling in the Super Bowl. No matter what either team did, the game was decided by situational playcalling and defense. That's what this team is all about. Lastly, we've seen first-hand that he's not opposed to throwing the ball (2012), or using tons of different offensive formations and motion to open up the passing game (2014 & 2015)

Fisher and Snead have taken a longer route to making the Rams a playoff caliber team than hoped. They had success with building the defense with some already established talent. They lost Bradford twice and weren't successful with free agent offensive lineman nor drafting WRs. Last year were the beginning steps of putting a solid offense to go along with a solid defense. Running back Todd Gurley and the young offensive lineman drafted last year showed great promise with poor to decent quarterback play. So yes X a solid quarterback and the Rams can break that .500 mark this year even without that elusive #1 WR!

Edit: The Rams are becoming what Fisher ball is about. Tough defense and solid offensive line with a stud running back. Now, he is adding a quarterback that can feed of the running game and get the Rams a lead early in games.

Agree across the board.
I am psyched we are getting to start over with a hand picked QB
Frankly, I don't know what a Jeff Fisher offense is or more importantly, what a Jeff Fisher QB is. Now we will find out both of which and I cant wait.
I agree that this team could and should be better than 7-9, and the vital piece that has been missing looks to be coming aboard

For those who believe the Rams' offense is archaic and Fisher is out of touch with today's "modern" NFL offenses, do me a favor and suspend disbelief in his vision for a minute and take a look at something real quick. These are the splits for the Rams last year in terms of running and passing in the first and second halves. ( courtesy of http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/ram/2015.htm )

And this last graphic represents the games that were arguably decided by QB play.

*IF* (and I understand it's a big IF) these games were quarterbacked a little better, the record last year, conceivably could have been 13-3 instead of 7-9. And that's a very fair estimate in my opinion. So I ask you. What's wrong with the way this offense runs other than the fact that it didn't have a top QB? In my opinion, this team (including this offense) is built for late January/early February football. If they get this pick right, and get a little luck in the injury department, we're already on the track to success. We just need to quit having it derailed by injury and only average QB play.

We can argue ad infinitum about whether or not Fisher/Snead botched the QB position over the past few years, but that's absolutely an exercise in futility. There are too many variables to consider when making such a claim (IMO), but arguments can be made the other way as well. The bottom line, however, is that they are in a position to silence that particular criticism now. They made the move to insert the final piece this year, so it's moot.

Disagree?

You're arguing that those stars solely indicate substandard QB play rather than a combo of substandard QB play and poor scheming for the position.

Doubling down on crappy scheme isn't going to fix it... It'll get us to maybe 9-7 and more Fisher excuses and extensions...

That's correct. I am signaling that it's based solely on substandard QB play.
Poor scheming for the position is an axiom I'm not hanging my hat on. I saw tremendous potential for the scheme when Boras took over.

My dilemma now is that I hope we keep Jeff Fisher for another year after this season so that our quarterback can develop under the same regime. And as some of you might recall, I wanted Fisher fired midway through last season. :palm:

For the love of everything that's Holy please turn this team around, Jeff!!!

Great post.

I really think if we had the QB to make just a few more plays in some of those games we would have been 10-6 or 11-5 no doubt.

In my opinion - Steelers, Vikings, Ravens, 49ers would have been wins but the offensive execution/QB play was lacking.

If Wentz or Goff can be that guy to make a few extra plays for us.. we could be in the playoffs.

I'll be the dick here and crush your dreams.

Those stats are worthless with the context of where those pass plays are going and how far they're going and the way they're going.

How many quick screens behind the LOS are called? Those are basically extensions of a run play.

There's still no creativity or necessary diversity in the types of routes being designed and run. I'd hate to see a QB like Goff waste away and be held back by Fisher's archaic system. I don't have to be a Rams fan anymore to be disgusted by god awful play-calling.

You could always find out for yourself, but here you go.

And for further context, here are the splits for the Packers last year.

We've been one QB away for what 3 seasons now?

We get a QB that isn't stellar just average at the least and we're playoff bound. Nuff said.

As a fan of fisher I'm a little biased here but I always thought him being out of touch wasnt an issue once he was willing to change to a spread offense thinking it would help Bradford. Granted it didn't work and didn't last long but the willingness was enough for me to see he's here to win, not to play a certain style of offense regardless of winning or losing

It wasn't a spread, it was a pass oriented WCO that Schottenheimer favored.

And they've been drafting for a power running, play action, vertical threat offense for the last three years. Virtually none of our personnel match a WCO.

It's maddening, but Fisher's gonna Fish...

I've seen enough games to know that sometimes Fisher is to convinced it will work his way.The numbers might say it's a balanced attack but the results don't.Not when it's 3rd and 8 and were throwing 5 yard passes. And when we get a lead it almost looks like he's satisfied and runs that vanilla offense. That hurts our defense i can't even remember right now when was the last time we blew a team out.I could be 100% wrong but that's what I see when i watch our Rams and it's frustrating.

He came to our Rams because of the money make no mistake about that. Now he may have liked Bradford more than other Qbs on other teams but the money was the main factor. As far as todays game it's not necessarily more passing just better play calling. I understand our Qb was the problem so now with Goff or Wentz i would expect better playcalling.A better quality Qb means alot less of under and overthrown passes. It would be nice if Fisher let his OC do his job and maybe our offense won't be predictable at times.

What I'm saying is, he's not calling the offense. So it's not his playcalling. The most he gets involved in the offense is he'll occasionally weigh in on what to do on third downs, but not that often (his words). And how can the results not show you it's a balanced offense? I'm not even sure what that means. You either throw 50% of the time and run 50% of the time, or you don't. Now that said, I'm not sitting here trying to tell you it's a fascinating and intricate offense. Far from. What I AM telling you is that it can work as it is with just a bit more production out of the QB position and maybe one or two upgrades at the playmaker positions. If those things change, and nothing else, there's no reason that this offense can't get the Rams into the playoffs and beyond.

Still think we need at least one good perimeter receiver and could use an upgrade at TE, but I'm holding out hope that this is Quick's year if we can't get anything done in the draft or free agency as it relates to finding an immediate starter. I would love it if Fisher and Snead finished off this 'splash' move with a cannon-ball and landed Moritz Boehringer in the draft to replace what Cook was (supposed to be) offering. He'd need a crash course in NFL speed and timing, but man do I think he would pay off big in the long run.

W/ regards to Quick, I think its still fair to say last year was a mental and physical learning period w/ his reconstructed shoulder. I too hope he can step his game up. lets hope we can add one good prospect @ wr this draft. I think I rather go WR & OC vs. WR & TE in Rd 4. Value appears to be a better match. Really bad draft class for TE after top 3-4 tight ends imho
Maybe add Boldin on a 1year deal because I don't see a day 3 draft pick at wr helping us this year or possibly the following year.
