First Look: Rams return from bye week to host Seahawks

The Los Angeles Rams (5-3) resume divisional play this week hosting the Seattle Seahawks (6-2) on Sunday, looking to get back on track after a disappointing loss to the Miami Dolphins. Kickoff from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, is scheduled for 1:25 p.m. pacific time on FOX.

In advance of the contest, here is your first look at Rams-Seahawks on Nov. 15, including notable Seahawks additions, some of Seattle's top statistical performers in Week 9 and key storylines:

Notable Seahawks additions

Acquired All-Pro and Pro Bowl safety Jamal Adams (and a 2022 fourth-round pick) in a trade with the New York Jets in July in exchange for their 2021 first and third-round picks, a 2022 first-rounder, and safety Bradley McDougald. Adams was sidelined for four games due to a groin injury sustained in Week 3 against the Cowboys but returned last week. In the four games Adams has been healthy, he's registered 28 total tackles, 3.5 sacks and one pass breakup.
Acquired Pro Bowl defensive end Carlos Dunlap in a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 28 in exchange for center B.J. Finney and a 2021 seventh-round pick. Brought in to improve Seattle's pass rush, 31-year-old Dunlap posted five total tackles (three for loss), one sack and two quarterback hits in his Seahawks debut last week.
Top performers in Week 9

QB Russell Wilson completed 28 of 41 pass attempts for 390 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Seahawks' 44-34 loss to the Bills, also adding a four-yard rushing touchdown to his stat line. Wilson also lost both of his fumbles.

With starter Chris Carson (foot) and backup Carlos Hyde (hamstring) each missing their second consecutive game due to injury, rookie RB DeeJay Dallas got the start against Buffalo, tallying seven carries for 31 yards and one touchdown plus two catches for eight yards. Travis Homer added six carries for 16 yards and three receptions for 64 yards.

WR D.K. Metcalf led Seattle receivers with seven receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown. Fellow receiver David Moore (four receptions for 71 yards) was on the receiving end of Wilson's other passing touchdown.

S Quinton Dunbar, CB Tre Flowers and LB Bobby Wagner led the Seahawks' defense with six total tackles each. Besides Dunlap's performance, Adams posted 1.5 sacks and DT Jarran Reed 2.5.

On special teams, K Jason Myers made both of his field goal attempts (long of 45) and all four of his extra point attempts.

Early storylines to watch, and what they mean for the Rams

With the Seahawks, Cardinals and 49ers all losing in Week 9, Week 10 presents a massive opportunity for the Rams when it comes to the NFC West. In fact, a win would move Los Angeles into a tie with Seattle for first place in the division, though an Arizona win could also make it a three-way tie.

Standing in the Rams' way of what would be an optimal start to the second half of the season, though, is an early NFL MVP candidate who has given opposing defenses fits.

Seahawks fans, for more than a year, have been begging for their team to "Let Russ Cook," or allow the signal-caller to play with his fourth-quarter aggressiveness from the onset of a game rather than toward the end of it. The result through the first eight weeks: The NFL's top passing offense in 2020, with Wilson averaging 317.6 yards per game. His 28 passing touchdowns lead the league and are three shy of his total in 16 games last season.

Consequently, Sunday's game will require an extra-disciplined effort by the Rams' pass rush and secondary and place an increased emphasis on creating takeaways.

The Cardinals picked off Wilson three times in Week 7, and though they were unable to capitalize on the first two, the third led to their game-winning field goal in overtime, a 34-31 victory. The Bills scored 16 points – three field goals, one touchdown – off Wilson's turnovers in their 44-34 Week 9 victory, the points and the timeliness of those takeaways helping prevent a Seahawks comeback.

If the Rams can do the same – they have shown they are capable against other opponents this season – it will help their chances of winning on Sunday.

Play Goff on your fantasy team. (y)

This is the type of big game we didn't get to experience in so many lean years as fans. I am going to enjoy this one and also appreciate that we are in the mix. Why not us? All the teams have flaws.

This is a game to watch these “strategies” coming together....

Seattle’s poor pass defense vs Rams desire to be run heavy.

Yeah.... this is a match up I am really watching these game plans... what is McVay thinking going into this?

No doubt, he hears the outcry to run the ball after that Miami game... but does that make sense in this one?

So, McVay; your move...

@CGI_Ram I think we continue to run the ball to set up the pass unless they go to their 6 man front. We should opt for more 12 formation and kill them with short passes, which may result in explosive plays (RB wheel/flare routes and roll outs).

Time to get back to Goff rolling out, hitting the Tight Ends and sticking to the run even if you don't have the success. Hopefully, we see that for the rest of the year.

Seattle has a Pass rush now 7 sacks against Buffalo.
Buffalo won due to turnovers by Seattle. May we get as lucky.

Rams need Ramsey to have a solid game against DK Metcalf, Henderson’s time to shine in this game, Everett and Higbee need to be Goffs security on theses Zero blitz packages...IMO

The common sentiments we’ve all been hearing about the Rams, especially around their bye week, have been that this team needs to find a way to play up to their potential on more consistent week-to-week basis. Their defense is currently second in the NFL in points allowed per game with 19.0 and total yards allowed with 291.9 per outing.

On the flip side, the offense is ranked 21st in points scored per game with 24.1 despite also being 6th in the NFL in total offensive yards per game with 396.4.

The defense has played well enough to make up for the lack of fireworks on offense, but that trend cannot last the whole season. Per Rams ESPN beat writer Lindsey Thiry, the offensive inconsistency is still the Rams’ biggest question mark heading into the second half of the season.

Here’s what she had to say about the matter early Wednesday morning

“Can the offense produce at a consistently high level? The Rams entered a Week 9 bye with a sour taste in their mouths after Brian Flores and the Dolphins effectively shut down Goff and the Rams’ offense. Flores’ scheme pressured Goff into several errant passes — if he was able to get the ball off at all. Going forward, the Rams must find a way to solve the zero pressures the Dolphins presented, knowing it’s likely future opponents will use that game as a blueprint to slow Sean McVay’s scheme. Can Goff return to the level of play he demonstrated through the first five games of the season?”

Rams have a chance to boost passing stats with game against Seahawks
1605110268600.png

And Jared Goff will get two opportunities to do so
By Kenneth Arthur@KennethArthuRS Nov 10, 2020

The Los Angeles Rams are 21st in points scored at the midpoint of the season and 24th in points per drive. The Super Bowl team of 2018 was second in scoring and third in points per drive. They were propelled by Jared Goff’s touchdown rate of 5.7%, but that figure dropped to 3.5% in 2019 and sits at 4.6% through eight games.

Todd Gurley scored 17 rushing touchdowns that season too, with nine of them coming within two yards of the goal line.

The Rams need to find that rate of scoring once again, to consistently put Darrell Henderson, Malcolm Brown and Cam Akers within two yards of the goal line and for Goff to find his form again because after a quality start to begin the season, he’s regressed back to his 2019 numbers thanks to a recent slump. While the Seattle Seahawks were once a dreaded matchup for Goff because of their prowess for good pass defense, that is not even close to the case anymore.

The Seahawks could be just what the gofftor ordered.Though LA has won four of their last six games against Seattle and had every business winning all six, Goff has thrown eight interceptions in those games and fumbled four times. He has passed for over 300 yards in three of his last four starts against the Seahawks, though that is probably also related to the NFL’s current passing era and desire to show fans the long ball.

The Seahawks have no qualms about opening the gates for opposing passers to pad their stats and provide competition for Russell Wilson in the 2020 MVP debate. Josh Allen knows plenty about that.

Of the eight quarterbacks who have thrown at least 20 passes against Seattle, San Francisco 49ers backup Nick Mullens had the fewest yards (238) and had two touchdowns and no interceptions in place of starter Jimmy Garoppolo. Mullens’ 9.52 yards per attempt however is the second-most of any QB to face the Seahawks this year, behind the 10.92 of Allen on Sunday.

Three quarterbacks have thrown for more than 400 yards against Seattle (Dak Prescott at 472, Matt Ryan at 450 and Allen at 415) and three more have topped 300 (Cam Newton at 397, Kyler Murray at 360 and Ryan Fitzpatrick at 315). Ryan and Newton had their highest yardage outputs of the season against the Seahawks, Allen tied his season-high, Prescott and Murray had their second-best such games. Prescott, Allen and Murray each threw for three touchdowns, while Ryan, Mullens and Kirk Cousins each had two.

Where Seattle has had success is turnovers as seven QBs have thrown a pick against the Seahawks. But only Cousins and Garoppolo had fewer than seven yards per attempt. If not for Garoppolo and Fitzpatrick, a QB who potentially should be benched and one who already was, every passing game against Seattle this season would be considered a success for the quarterback.

Goff will face this defense twice in the next seven weeks. So will Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Josh Reynolds and Van Jefferson.

There are four players who have topped 130 receiving yards (Julian Edelman, Julio Jones, Michael Gallup, Calvin Ridley) and seven more who have topped 90 yards against the Seahawks. Ridley and Cedrick Wilson each scored two touchdowns. And 14 players have caught at least eight passes, including Larry Fitzgerald, N’Keal Harry, Kendrick Bourne, Brandon Aiyuk, John Brown and Russell Gage.

But rushing hasn’t been as much of a focus against the Seahawks and Seattle is fourth in yards per carry allowed; only Minnesota backup Alexander Mattison has topped 100 rushing yards against Seattle. In fact, he’s the only player to top 70 rushing yards against the Seahawks and Kyler Murray is second on the list. Fitzpatrick and Newton are tied for sixth.

Sunday should be a good passing day for the LA Rams. Will that turn into a winning day? That will have as much to do with Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey as it does with Goff and the NFL’s worst pass defense.

I think we know what McVay will do: pass. Maybe it's the right answer against Seattle. I'd still like to see some consistent running too, and in particular Akers getting the ball with Henderson seemingly beat up.

I need to go look back at the 2019 draft...

How in the hell did DK Metcalf get past everyone? 788yds, 8 TD’s thru 8 games... damn.

In the games I’ve seen this year of him, I am not sure there is another WR I’d rather have right now. Dude is a stud.

I think teams thought he could only run a couple of routes. And he was kind of stiff in his movements. I dunno, he may have been a high chance of busting. Having said that he landed in the perfect place, just run downfield and wait for the green midget to escape the pocket and throw the ball your way.

I haven't watched any of their games so i don't know if they need him to run many different routes.
