I don't think he finds a trade that the rams will like. He plays out the year or signs their offer. either way he plays this year out.

I am not sure I want him on the team now.

This rarely ends well.

Mods please change the title of this thread.
Apparently Jones has NOT asked for a trade.
The Rams are offering to let him find his market value.
Good faith offer if both sides differ on this.

Oh is that what the Rams have said or Jones did? Many of us are thinking that is the case because that's what teams do with players a lot but I haven't heard that the Rams are idiotic enough to actually say that so teams know not to negotiate with him or the team.

If we don't want to pay him big bucks, the best scenario for the Rams is he play out the year, sign a high value contract elsewhere in free agency, and we get a 3rd or 4th comp pick. I doubt what they get in trade now will match that.
I wonder if he even gets a big offer in free agency. The knee is worrisome and he’s not a complete inside/middle linebacker. He doesn’t have great lateral range. In my opinion he is in the 12-15 range.

I understand him wanting security, especially after his knee acting up, but that has to factor into the Rams concerns about signing him long term.

Good point. Who knows. The knee is the x factor. I have no idea how the Rams, or any other team, see that.

I think he's above average so slightly better than 12-15 but once you factor in a chronic injury the sides can be far apart.

Rams LB Ernest Jones says he never requested a trade

A report on Sunday morning indicated that the Rams have given linebacker Ernest Jones permission to look for a trade after failing to make progress in talks on a new contract, but it doesn’t sound like Jones is itching to leave the team.

Jones posted on X on Sunday afternoon that he “never asked for a trade” away from the NFC West club. The team may still have offered him the chance to find a team that is willing to give him the kind of deal he’s looking for, but Jones’s response signals he’s willing to play out the final year of his current pact with the Rams.

Jones had 145 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and six passes defensed in 15 starts last season. He also had nine tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble in the team’s playoff loss to the Lions.

The Rams list Jones as a starter alongside Christian Rozeboom. Jacob Hummel, Troy Reeder, Omar Speights, Elias Neal, and Olakunle Fatukasi are also on the roster.

I think some people are taking this way to personal. The league is set up for these guys to try to get a new deal before the last year of the contract. This way is good for the team if want to keep the player and keep him off the market. This is how the league works.
If there was 2 years left on the contract it would be a different story.
As it stands it just looks like the player and the team are having trouble agreeing on a number. This is just another step in the process.

So does this mean he's worth of being a Ram and wearing the green dot again :D

I’m looking for the best situation for the Rams - THIS YEAR. So IMO let him explore his market value but we need him on the field. We have no plan B or plan C at this point. Only “potential” talent given time to mature.

Middle of the pack sounds about right for him. His range isn't great but the leadership and knowledge of the scheme and calls are strong, and his timing on the rush is good too. He's kind of similar to Laurinaitis tbh.

To my eye the Rams in the last couple decades have had one elite ILB and that was Fletcher. And of course Georgia let him walk. But I think he was the one guy it would be worth it to pay. Jones isn't of that level but it would be nice if he could play this year for us because it's a contract season which means we'll get his very best and he'll probably play through any injuries barring significant ones.

Wondering if they're thinking about making a change. I do think Jones is our best ILB. Speights has some great tools but does he know the defense and calls like Jones. I doubt that. But that said if they are ready to go forward with someone else so be it. I certainly don't want to see them paying Jones $15-20M per. Or honestly even $10M per might be too much when it could go towards something more impacting.

Sounds like the team will work with him if he finds a team willing to pay him big money but that both sides aren't actually wanting him to go somewhere

I don't know that you can assume Les Snead will make one of those 6th or 7th round trades in this case. That seems to be for players they would have just cut if a trade didn't happen - Akers, Jefferson, etc., or a money dump (Allen Robinson, Ramsey - a 3rd, but definitely took less to move him than his value to the team).

They have never really had a top-value starting player that they wanted/felt they had to trade, that wasn't a salary dump (in the Les Snead era). I hope that will lead to a better return. Or, even better, this leads Jones to seeing the market and taking the deal the Rams are offering.

I’m not going at you specifically, because the idea of Jones finding out what he’s worth by finding out what other teams are willing to offer has been mentioned a few times already.
—but hasn’t that ship sailed?

The Rams have always been good about allowing a player to seek out what they’re worth on the open market when there’s an idea of player retention but the cost could be an issue. This goes beyond that though, IMO. Jones has not waited for his contract to expire and sought out a higher bidder. He’s flat out asked to be traded.

Can Jones come back and play out his contract without a new deal in place and not expect to be dumped after the season? What attitude will he bring? Can the Rams bring him back and not expect a locker room issue?

This is exactly what I want to happen to ayuck and the 9ers.

1. I don't like this at all.
2. This better not mean the Rams are content to start the season with Reeder and Roseboom at starters. We'll be toast.
3. I like Speights and Hummel, but neither are remotely close to being the Leader/player EJ53 is right now.
4. There's not a damn player you could get back that's going to have a bigger impact than EJ53 this season, other than an ILB of his caliber or better. And you know Les will settle for a 6th RD pick.
5. I hate how cheap the Rams get at this position. EJ53 is way more than just a very good player. He's the biggest leader on Defense, and he's the green dot bearer.

This is the shit shouldn't deal with before the season begins.
They must have known. ( the powers that be) hopefully we will find out the real story. Besides if he doesn't find another team he will still play for us and will have to play well if he wants to move on next year? Go rams
