Maybe if you are drafting like the Browns or Raiders. How many starters did we draft last season? GRob, Tre, Gaines....oh, and that Donald guy. Yes, we had 2 1st rounders, but still. I agree with @Riverumbbq that you absolutely HAVE to expect young players and draft picks to contribute in this age of FA.

Last season's treasure trove was more the exception than the rule, no? I mean, even with that, none started the season as starters. They certainly couldn't have replaced all of the players being suggested we let go?

It shouldn't be the exception, and that is my point. Good organizations draft well and get early returns from those drafted. The Rams have drafted INFINITELY better since Snisher arrived, and I expect that to continue.

2013 was another exceptional draft that yielded 4 starters (Stacy, Austin, McDonald and Tree) with others such as Stedman who have contributed and may eventually become featured. Even McGee gets a lot of playing time.

2012 Draft? Brockers, J Jenkins, Quick, Tru and Gregzilla have all been contributors since year one (yes even Quick).

See where I'm going here?

I don't really see why a guy with his resume would be even a little bit inclined to sign a "prove it" deal...
Keep in mind Mathis is still getting a chunk of change from the Eagles.

That said, he probably shouldn't be inclined to sign a prove it deal. He should ink with a team that runs a ZBS and that's willing to pay him more than we can as he'd be a better fit.

Let us bring him in and get a full physical first. If he is'nt recovering from serious injuries and surgeries like Long and Joseph both were and Wells never played up to his pay or even reached a C rated player. I think Mathis is better than all 3 here by a mile . I think Kelly has lost his mind and has no business playing the role of GM. The eagles will find out very shortly with Sam on the ground again (sad to say).

Many here have already said they wished we could have Saffold next to Rob Havenstein as he played very well on the right side at ORG. I'm not gonna compare the year we got Warner to fill in for an injured Green and got Faulk in a trade and added Timmerman that gave our OL the boost it needed bigtime and we still had a weakspot at ORT that whole year with Miller I think as our weakest OL. I know things went downhill fast after that year at ORT.

We need more Vet help in the short time we have since Fisher hates practicing. Who knows who will get injured? Remember the nightmare rash of injuries on our OL? It was epic. No Way would I offer Mathis anywhere near the amount some have mentioned and it will be a one year prove it deal with incentives loaded as our guy does it better than anyone.

If there is a few teams interested then let them overpay for Mathis. Maybe the Broncos are desperate, we aren't but I know Fisher is'nt sleeping well knowing he may start two rookies on the right side with wanting to get a real decent look at Foles this season and wanting him to have time. Foles does best when getting the ball out quickly anyway.

I think we had the 8 million we have to add the best OL to our group before the season and Mathis will be the best option we are gonna see. He is said to have bought already his plane ticket and was gonna finally show up for OTA's so its a Kelly deal that he hates players that give him any trouble. Kelly is not a GM and never will be. Great college coach. No One here knows what Mathis will accept no matter what many (THINK) he is looking for. He settled for minimum last year. Lets see how it plays out and I'm sure Fisher has Snead as involved as possible to see if we can get this guy in here. Demoff can work his magic and we can dump him next year at no cost.

If someone wants to overpay then great. I don't want us too. But the thought of Foles , Gurley and Mathis will never equal Warner,Faulk and Timmerman but its at the lowest level of the same thing for a team lost in the desert. Its time to make the playoffs and it may just take one more bump to get over the fence. Thats all I'm saying. We may even still need to start Reynolds at ORT "IF" Rob Havenstein has a very hard time making the transition. If not for just weeks.

Lets at least make an attempt to get Mathis on the cheap and maybe Foles can make a phone call like another qb got a player to sign for his team earlier this year in the offseason. WHO KNOWS? If you truly think Brown is better than Mathis who has less tread on his tires than most 34 year olds and no ACL's like Long and Joseph and know Slater played until he was 40 years old and still started for us. He can help this young bunch and injuries are gonna happen. Just wait. Nothing we would do will affect next years free agents. demoff is too good for that. Just check the guy out. Our OL will be our weakest spot on our team this year and this guy could really be a big boost in attitude and learning.

Former Eagles player says Evan Mathis caused his own release

Former Eagles offensive lineman Todd Herremans said his former teammate, Evan Mathis, can blame only himself for his release Thursday.

"I think it's very unfortunate how it all went down," Herremans told 97.5 FM The Fanatic on Friday. "It's tough to not add any offensive linemen and get rid of both of your starting guards in one offseason."

Herremans spent 10 years with the Eagles, starting 124 games, but was released in February by coach Chip Kelly. He signed with the Colts two weeks later. He told the Philadelphia radio station that Kelly has a plan, but "nobody really knows what it is, but he has a plan and he's putting it into action."

Mathis was a two-time Pro Bowl performer but was unhappy with his current contract, which had two years remaining. The 10-year veteran had been with the Eagles since 2011 but did not attend any of the team's voluntary offseason programs.

The Eagles had been trying to trade the 6-5, 300-pound Alabama native, but Kelly said they did not receive any offers. Mathis is now one of the league's most sought-after free agents with the Dolphins, Rams and Chiefs, who are coached by former Eagles coach Andy Reid, as possible landing spots.

"I know that Evan wasn't happy about his contract," Herremans told The Fanatic. "I know he also wanted to win. He's a monster in the gym. I know he was working out in the gym and keeping himself in shape. I know that wasn't an issue. It was more of the team bonding, camaraderie and needing him there ... What's going to make you think that if someone's not coming to all of the voluntary stuff? That doesn't give you a real good feeling that they're going to show up to the mandatory stuff."

Jesus Christ, what is about Sam that makes teams think they don't need an O-line when he's under center?

The second he leaves we make O-line our first, second, and third priority and the Eagles forgot they even needed one.

WOW

That was quite an attack. Accuse me of trolling and going after my admittedly lame handle, ... pretty amazing from this opinion forum. I wasn't expecting it on ROD, but ... whatever.

I'm guessing you misunderstood my second post after being originally questioned by flv, but I definitely stand by both of my posts. If not misunderstood, then truly amazed. It basically comes down to whether I would rather have a quality starting LG for a couple years or a slew of free agent back-ups who are likely easily replaceable thru the draft and free agency. Your attack on draftees is absurd as this is exactly how Fisher wants to build his team, using younger & better quality talent to phase out the older and less reliable.
There are several Rams free agents next year, 24 of them based on flv's list, although a few of them may be replaced or displaced as early as this coming 2015 camp. We know that 6 or 7 players will be replaced as they are every year, by means of the draft, and some are likely to be re-signed between now and the opening of the 2016 free agency period, ... no guessing how many that will be. Of the 24 potential free agents, I've mentioned 10 to key on re-signing (from my point of view), of the remaining 14 roster players, 6 or 7 will be added thru the draft. I imagine a couple of those 2016 free agents being replaced thru the 2015 camp process, so lets say that leaves 5 or 6 players in the lesser rankings of players to replace via free agency, some of our own, and some from outside, ... big deal ! As i've mentioned a couple times, Foles is the missing link for addressing how a QB effects our CAP next season, that and whatever savings is brought about by extending/restructuring Chris Long & Cook. At the moment, I see no worries over the 2016 CAP. jmo.

Hey, River, I was just rereading my post. Unfortunately, posts don't have voice inflections or body language. I meant no harm. I like your name an especially like rivers, rum, and BBQ!

Your points are valid and thought out. I was just discussing them with you.

No offense intended. :)

Looking into this more I say no thanks. It really makes me question the guy when he holds out with 2 years $13.5 million left on his contract at 34 years old. He's also a ZBS guy, yes I'm sure he would be acceptable in our more PBS but there is a scheme difference for him. Then the cherry on top of it is the guys played a full season just twice in 10 years. Do we really want to sign a 34 year old OLineman who's rarely been able to stay healthy and was holding out with him having 2 years $13.5 million on the books?

jrry32 with questions:
If he's elite and the best OG in the NFL (or even top 3)...why did nobody trade for him? Why did nobody offer anything for him? Why did the Eagles cut him? It's not like this was a surprise move. The guy has been on the block for months. And yet, nothing.
Because Of his age and the fact that he wasn't being offered in trade?
Because he wasn't on the trading block?
Because his constant carping about his salary finally lead to him being released due to the distraction and uncertainty it was causing?

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000496735/article/four-potential-landing-spots-for-evan-mathis
Four potential landing spots for Evan Mathis
When a big-name player at a premium position gets cut during the offseason or during training camp, it brings back the familiar rush of free agency where more than a dozen teams take a good look at a veteran that can make their team significantly better.
On Thursday, that happened again when the
Eagles got rid of guard Evan Mathis, a 33-year-old perennial Pro Bowler who can plug and play in almost half of the offenses in the NFL right now.

With more importance being placed on interior offensive line strength over the years, Mathis will almost certainly be keeping his cell phone carrier busy.

Here are a few destinations the Around The NFL crew thinks make some sense:

New York Giants:
Mathis held out of workouts due to a contract dispute and is the latest in a long line of players to defect from Chip Kelly island with a bit of an attitude. Is there a better place for him to go than a division rival that desperately needs help along their offensive line?

The Giants, who have lost left tackle Will Beatty for the foreseeable future, are now depending on rookie Ereck Flowers to hold down the position. Signing Mathis would at least give them an immediate-assistance option to Flowers' inside, or he could give them the flexibility of moving guard/tackle Geoff Schwartz to tackle. Mathis, a zone blocking specialist, would feel relatively at home in a scheme not unlike the one he used to run with Andy Reid. Offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo brought many zone principles with him from Green Bay. --Conor Orr

Seattle Seahawks:
Mathis isn't a power-blocking mauler. His game is best suited for a zone-blocking scheme, which limits the pool of suitors. TheSeahawks run a highly effective zone attack, have roughly $10 million in available cap space and need veteran help on the interior after trading center Max Unger and losing guard James Carpenter to the Jets. Why not sign with a Super Bowl contender to close out his career? -- Chris Wesseling

Denver Broncos:

Evan Mathis is a large, beefy man now wandering the streets as a free agent. Teams will show interest in the Pro Bowl guard, but it would be wise for the veteran to seek out the right scheme fit. A zone-blocking team like the Broncos makes plenty of sense.

Denver currently has former practice-squader Ben Garland penciled in at left guard ahead of underwhelming veteran Shelley Smith and rookie Max Garcia. With left tackle Ryan Clady out for the year, right guard Louis Vasquez looms as the only veteran holdover from last season. Coach Gary Kubiak should give serious consideration to Mathis, who thrived in Philly's zone-based scheme and would help shore up what looms as the worst line Peyton Manning has played behind in ages. -- Marc Sessler

Oakland Raiders:

Evan Mathis wanted this outcome. He wanted a raise from the Eagles more, but learned quickly that Chip Kelly wasn't going to give him that. So he wanted out of Philadelphia so that he could get his fair value elsewhere. It's a risky proposition.

Mathis was due $5.5 million in 2014 and that will be a difficult salary to find at this stage of the offseason. So what team has enough cap space and desperation to pay the oldest projected starting guard in the league that kind of money? Look to Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie! Mathis will be driven to get top dollar, and the Raiders are a logical team to pay it. I look at this Mathis contract as an experiment to see how much a ProFootball Focus ranking is worth. The analytics website has essentially put Mathis' play at a Hall of Fame level since 2011. We'll see if McKenzie agrees. -- Gregg Rosenthal

I'd bring Mathis in just for the influence he would have on the team. Rookies can learn a lot from good players being on their team.
