Donald/Brockers duo better 2nd time around

The LA Rams averted a huge roster gaffe by nearly allowing DL Michael Brockers to sign elsewhere. Not only would that have been counterproductive to the team, but it was a huge strain upon the relationship the team has with All-Pro defensive lineman Aaron Donald. That is until the fates smiled and freed up defensive lineman Michael Brockers from a nearly instantaneous signing on with the Baltimore Ravens the moment the 2020 NFL Free Agency market opened for business.

In short, the Ravens were unhappy with Brockers’ medical data and wished to renegotiate the terms of the contract originally agreed to. That allowed the LA Rams an opportunity to swoop in, match the terms of the Ravens now-withdrawn offer, and retain Brockers on the Rams defensive front. That meant a great deal to the Rams All-Pro defensive lineman Aaron Donald, who personally lobbied for the Rams to retain Brockers. You see, not only does the duo have a strong bond of friendship, but Donald truly respects the contributions of his teammate, and is happy to share his thoughts whenever he gets a chance.

The Rams almost let Brockers slip away, despite the focus upon improving the Rams running defense. Almost, but for the sheer random luck of miscommunication and some frugal attempts by the Baltimore Ravens to shave some dollars off a contract, did not. In the end, and completely by accident, the LA Rams reunite two of the most effective defensive linemen in the NFL. Now, the NFC West running offenses will have their hands full of two newly motivated run-stopping teammates.

So that restores the LA Rams defensive line to the base starting point from 2019. But the Rams did have one thing missing. A strong nose tackle who would attract the attention of the offensive line. Yes, the team has two young defensive linemen in Sebastian Joseph-Day and Greg Gaines. But the Rams had a dominating player like that once before, Ndamukong Suh, and the result was career-high stats for Donald. A player whose size and strength forces offenses to double team him, opening the way for Donald to devastate that offense.

The Rams have found such a player in A’Shawn Robinson. A powerful roadblock who will likely be the fireplug in the middle of the Rams defensive front. Now the Rams base 3-4 will feature Aaron Donald, A’Shawn Robinson, and Michael Brockers, with both Sebastian Joseph-Day and Greg Gaines rotating in. Say what you will about the LA Rams, but this rotation at the defensive line will be incredible in 2020.

In a previous article, we compared the stats of Robinson and Brockers and concluded that Brockers was a good free agent substitute for Brockers on the Rams defensive front. But we had no idea that the Rams would have the benefit of both playing on the same defensive line.

As the team sorts through who will get the start at the linebacker positions, the front three has been upgraded so well that it may not matter as much as originally thought. With Brockers, Robinson, and Donald at the defensive line, the Rams middle linebackers should benefit from cleaner play than many teams. And with the projected starting outside linebackers as Leonard Floyd and Terrell Lewis, there will be very little degradation on the pass rush which was a Rams strong suit in 2019.

With this defense, the more you look, the more there is to love about it. The LA Rams allowed 1,809 yards on the ground in 2019. I project that will fall to an estimated 1,600 yards on the ground. And yes, that is despite the Rams facing the San Francisco 49ers, the Seattle Seahawks, and the Arizona Cardinals, all of whom love to run the ball.

The NFL Draft, for the most part, will impact most teams in 3-4 years down the road. The LA Rams, who have historically fast-tracked drafted players into productive roles on the team, will likely see defensive contributions from OLB Terrell Lewis and S/CB Terrell Burgess this year.

I don’t see the LA Rams collapsing in 2020. If the team had a collapse mentality, that would have occurred in 2019 amidst all the turmoil. The LA Rams will rebound this year. And it will all start up front in the trenches.

It'd be really interesting if our new Staley D turns out to be one that's really tough to run against. That would really change the dynamic of our team. I guess ILB is the big question mark presonnel-wise.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, as the Rams were getting MB back. Putting A Shawn in the middle between AD and Brockers has the potential to improve the run D beyond recognition. We’ll see... but at least I’m not the only one who likes the kool aid.

Can’t imagine too many (IF, ANY!) teams having much success running the ball against the Rams this coming season! I think opposing teams will be forced to throw a LOT which will lead to a LOT of Interceptions by the Rams!!

Brockers is a 3T being played out of position at 5T. He lacks the speed and quickness to play outside. His successes last year were setup by AD, Fowler, and the secondary. He isn't as strong at the POA on runs as he should be. In fact, Ebukam sets a much harder edge than Brockers. That said he's an improvement over Okoronkwo and provides them with an affordable option to playing Lewis too hard too early and Okoronkwo who's lack of athleticism showed in his snaps last year. I wouldn't be surprised to see Okoronkwo move to the left side of the defense as he is too often stymied by better LT's.

But with the drafting of Lewis, I see Brockers role as being a 2 year 2 down place holder for Lewis. Because of his injury history, Lewis is a long way from being a finished product. Brockers gives the Rams 2 years to develop Lewis into the elite edge he is capable of being. IMO Lewis will see significant snaps this season, but in rotation with not only Brockers but Floyd and perhaps Ebukam as well. I think the Rams will develop him into a complete edge/OLB they envision he is capable of being.

I'm excited about Robinson being on the team. Its the same feeling when we signed Suh. I thought our D was going to be a sack, interception and 3 and out monster. Other than Donald almost breaking the sack record that year the DL and defense as a whole was a let down. I just hope we don't get the same results with Robinson. Hopefully unlike Suh he plays hard all season long and we actually see some improvement in the run stopping area.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Rams were rolling the dice that the Ravens would try to pull something like that after the physical. Just like they had a wat of getting Saffold back when he was supposed to go to the Raiders. Let them test the market and welcoming then back home with the contract they wanted in the first place. Beyond smart. Say what you will about the front office, but I think we have one of the best in the NFL.

I disagree that the Rams assumed they would get Brockers back. Look at how his contract is structured. He's getting $3.3M this year to help out with the cap but it jumps to $9.8M next year. His final year is structured like an option year for the Rams. So, in reality, they will pay him somewhere between $7.5 - $8M per year which is middle of the pack of OLB and edge.

It was partly due to Brockers himself not presenting himself to the team doctors. IMO that made the Ravens suspicious and rightly so. So they pulled the offer. The Rams obviously know of his ankle and it's why IMO they allowed him to walk. It's also why they structured his contract as basically a two year deal.

If there was any manipulation here it's on Brockers himself. He knows he has a physical problem so he's getting the best deal he can look at it as probably his last NFL starters multi-year contract. He's personally well-grounded in his finances so this contract could set him up nicely for the rest of his life. I can see one or two single year contracts after this with other teams.

I only hope his ankle holds out and it's another reason I see him strictly as a two-down player.

I stopped reading this article when it said “Now, the NFC West running offenses will have their hands full of two newly motivated run-stopping teammates.”

Michael brockers is solid and all but you can put Aaron Donald’s name next to mine and say “two run stopping teammates”

point being that’s like me saying me and Lebron James combined for 60 points in high school when Lebron scored 56

I think McVay has prioritized the run defense and that really started to take effect last season with SJD stepping up and Rapp's addition to the secondary.

2017 YPC Against: 4.6 (30th) <------ Westbrooks @NT (n)
2018 YPC Against: 4.8 (27th) <------ Suh @NT (n)
2019 YPC Against: 4.1 (T-8th) <------ SJD @NT :horns::cool:(y)

So fast forward to 2020 and the addition of a good run stuffing DL and OLB which means really good depth and subbing... Yeah I expect to be solid and hopefully a little more consistent vs the run.

Somehow I get an image of Donald carrying Brockers on this back with this "top rated tandem."

should be able to point to a game and say Brockers dominated and took the game over. I’ve never seen it. That’s with Donald drawing special attention from the O line.

The point about keeping Donald happy suggests that the 135m contract he got was not enuff to keep Aaron happy. If that is the case then its a bad contract we gave Aaron.

Not everyone is a superstar.

Rams found a defensive line starter for the next decade when they drafted him. Coaches love those kinds of players.
