Do the Patriots get back Gordon and a healthy Gronk?
This. If we are getting Gurley and Kupp back at 100%, they have to be getting Gronk back at 100%, too. And a healthy Gronk is an absolute game wrecker. He's one of the biggest mismatches in the NFL. I know some people in this thread think Gronk was healthy, but that's laughable. He certainly appeared far healthier than he was earlier in the season (the Patriots conceded such, with his former disc problems etc.), and for my money Gronk was far healthier than Gurley was on Sunday. But Gronk was still clearly not at full strength.
I don't count Josh Gordon as his absence was mental health related. And without diminishing the validity of his demons, I think for the purposes of this particular conversation, considerations should be limited to physical injuries only.
In the end, I think if we we get Gurley and Kupp back vs. the Pats getting Gronk at 100%, the Rams win. I say this because a healthy Gurley is
exactly what we needed on Sunday. Runs to the outside with speed. Screen passes. More balance on offence. Giving Goff easy outlets early, be it via quick check down passes to the RB or simply handing the ball off, to get his feet under him in a game we knew would be tough for a young QB - especially early. Winning back some time of possession to keep the D fresher. And we haven't even talked about Kupp yet.
In the end, we will never know and there is no point of speculating. Even if we had Gurley and Kupp and deployed them perfectly, who is to say New England doesn't adjust to take them away? Their coaching staff is certainly up to the task. We had plenty of opportunities to win the game as it was. We probably should have, as we had the better roster with this being a "down" year for New England. But we were badly outcoached, Goff had a poor outing, and their stars (Gronk, Edleman) made a few more big plays than ours did (Cooks). That's the end of the story. We lost fair and square. Every team has injuries. Losing Kupp and Gurley was an absolutely devastating blow, but there is a reason staying healthy is always priority #1, and that the teams that go furthest are often the healthiest.
