It is interesting & lucky these days to be able to read so many different thoughts on just this single subject " Do the Rams really need an edge" then add in the bullet points on the differing grades of skill levels of what the Ram roster has to fill the ER Von Miller post with the three .....Lewis/ Hollins & Garrett.

Snead does have a successful draft history going back to 2012 with selecting corners/ safeties but Snead's draft resume on finding starting ER's would more than likely fall in the opposite range. Samson Ebukam would be his best-drafted ER since he has been a Ram.

I never thought it would be so hard to find 34 D tweeners who can play in the NFL & remain healthy.

We need to get a couple of Edge rushers out of this draft. We lost Von and Obo, so we have the roster spots open. We need 4 guys....but it is true that we have 4 guys right now.... Floyd Hollins Lewis and Garrett. IF Lewis can stay healthy....he would be a huge factor for us...Garrett has shown some promise. But Lewis injury history ...to me...makes drafting an edge a necessity for us.... and providing competition for Garrett warrants drafting another Edge at some point in this draft.

I'm not short changing anything. Before Von Miller joined the Rams on the field, they had 28 sacks in 9 games (3.1/g). After Miller hit the field, the Rams had 22 sacks in the last 8 games (2.7/g). But of course, his contribution was more than statistics. It was leadership and less pressure on Floyd and Donald. In the postseason 12 in 4 games (3.0/g) and that was with the benefit of 7 vs the Bengals terrible O line. As far as vs the run, the first 9 games without VM, 99.5/g. The last 8 with him 107.2/g. No shortchange at all.

However, I think many fans are OVERSTATING his impact. He was an additional piece. An extra. A boost. A postseason phenom. The fact they tried to resign him wasn't so much because he played Edge but more so because he was Von Miller. Certainly the main reason they obtained him in the first place. Bring in Houston, or Clowney or Ingram and it's not going to be the same thing. In fact, I'd venture, not even close. We don't NEED Edge, although it would have been nice to have Von Miller.

You're right. Miller's impact was overstated in terms of on field production. Hollins is a solid Edge to pair with Floyd, and there's upside in brining in a couple more younger guys. Would have been great to bring him back, but there's upside potential in us moving on.

Hunter and the Vikings have restructured his contract. They would have a lot of dead money even with a post-June 1 trade.
Agree. Don't see Hunter as a realistic trade-possibility.

I am looking at teams that are tight-under-the-cap, and may need relief. I exclude any of the Super-Bowl-contenders. The three that stand-out to me are Atlanta, NY Giants and Jacksonville.

All three will need to clear additional cap-space to sign their draft-classes. For example, the Giants are (like the Rams) $7M under the cap. However, while the Rams need $2M for their draft-class, the Giants will need more than $16M to sign their draft-class.

Of course, these teams can re-structure contracts and/or release players. However, if they can get some value; and the additional cap relief that a trade would provide instead of just releasing a player, that would be advantageous to those teams.

However, those teams would need to find a trade-partner willing and able to take-on a big salary on a short-term deal. The Rams have done that in the past, with players like Brandin Cooks and Jalen Ramsey.

No player stands-out to me from the Falcons but the Giants' James Bradberry, and the Jaguars' Josh Allen are intriguing. The Giants want to move Bradberry and his $13.4M salary. If the Rams create a ton of cap space from the anticipated Donald and Kupp extensions, there might be a fit between the two teams.

Bradberry is a big-wish/hope, while Allen may be more of a dream/fantasy. However, it is the Jaguars, and Allen is going into the fourth-year of his rookie contract. Would Jacksonville want to exercise the fifth-year-option for 2023? It's almost $16M for a player with 20 sacks in three seasons. I hope Jacksonville takes an Edge (Aidan Hutchinson) with its top-pick. The Jaguars already have another former #1-Edge (the disappointing K'Lavon Chaisson) and signed Arden Key in free agency.

To be honest, I usually come-up with these type of Dream-Possibilities for the Rams. Unfortunately, I am still looking forward to the first time I am correct.

The last thing I ever thought was The Rams would resign Von Miller. Then again I never thought he would have gotten paid the way he did.
—What did he actually cost The Rams to rent him for 4 months ?

I don’t know my quote. OBo & Lawler both need to be replaced besides Von Miller. There is some nice competition .

Absolutely correct. They see these guys everyday. What they do in practice and how they learn from meetings. If we need a vet edge, they'll find one.

Maybe not.

Wide 9: Floyd
3T: Gaines
1T: Robinson
5T: Donald / Lewis

LBs Wagner, Jones, and Hollins.

They have played AD outside on many snaps in his career. He has the quickness and strength to play anywhere on the DL including edge. Gaines gets good penetration inside. Robinson isn't a pass rusher, but they won't go anywhere if it's a draw. Now add in the wildcard called Wagner. If the offense over commits anywhere on the DL, you give Wagner the option to blitz. With Robinson and Jones, Morris has the interior gaps covered should it be a run.

That is a formidable base front 7 to run or pass against. With AD outside it's going to be really tough to double him. Everyone on the front 4 is stout at the POA against the run. They have power and speed on the edges. The LBs are solid in coverage. This front 7 will allow Morris to really mix his coverages up on the back end. Hollins would be the rotational LB in the nickel.

They probably already have one of the best edges in the NFL in Donald. We have seen how good Gaines can be when they turn him loose. I'm not so sure anymore that they really need an edge. Lewis will allow Morris to continue to shift AD back inside, but what if they simply roll with Gaines, Robinson/Brown inside, and Floyd and Donald on the edges?

I think it's time for Lewis to be the player they expected when they drafted him. Lewis needs to do more than flash. He played 48% of the snaps and had 3 sacks, 7 pressures, and 4 hurries. But his role with Von playing ahead of him was more of a blitzing LB. It's time for Lewis to show he can be that every-down edge. But until he does AD is as good of an edge option as the Rams could want.
In a word….yes.
