Joyner has been marginal if he's not dropping deep, he has the heart of a lion but he hasn't exactly been a sure tackler and doesn't anticipate well even in the box IMO. I want to see him sitting on the pine tbh, think that is a move that should have happened by now but it's hard for the staff to hold him accountable when they also have a starting ILB and CB failing miserably in their jobs too.

Thing that concerns me with Swearinger is he's commented before about coaches being control freaks (like his comments with Obrien). He's a complainer who I'm not sure will play with discipline, which is an area our secondary has struggled in. So I'd have to be confident he'd play the call to bring him in, as we don't need another guy doing his own thing when we're already in a situation where we have to endure Peters' BS.

On the positive side a guy like him will go balls out to show the Skins were wrong to cut him, so expect he'll play very well for whoever adds him. Hope we find a way to bring him in.

I disagree on both. Joyner has had his issues in deep-zone coverage this year, but he's played well in the box. Marqui Christian has been a bigger issue for us than Joyner there. Joyner is simply a better player. He's better in man coverage, he's a more reliable tackler (Christian is allergic to wrapping up), and he's better in the zone coverage near the LOS. Both him and Johnson have had their issues in deep coverage. I don't feel our guys have been communicating well or sticking to their responsibilities back there. They make mistakes when they try to force big plays.

As for Swearinger, he fits well with Wade Phillips. Wade isn't a control freak type and encourages players to be themselves. I don't see us having an issue with him freelancing. I don't recall the Redskins having issues with that nor the Cardinals. The issues he had with the Redskins were related to him running his mouth to the media.

So it’s a 48 hour waiver process? A day to travel so earliest he could practice is Friday which we don’t practice on usually so not sure what he could contribute.

Swearinger would add a much needed toughness and tackling ability to the Rams defense. Not sure how good he is in coverage but Christian isn’t an NFL player and Joyner has been abused this year.

You may be right, and regardless the Rams seem to agree with you since Joyner hasn't been sat down yet. But I still harbor hope that it happens.

IMO Joyner's only value is short area coverage, and we have a better slot cover guy in NRC. Williams had it right with him, and when he hits FA he's in for a rude awakening.

Go get him, Snead! It'll move Christian back to special teams only (which he does good things for), and he's a good player who should fit under Wade.

I heard he has a really foul mouth... :rimshot:

He'd feel right at home in our weekly GDT.

Swearinger said coach Jay Gruden told him he was released in a brief meeting Monday morning.

The team announced that Swearinger was waived later Monday.

"He just said it was the third time I've been in his office and we're going to release you," Swearinger told co-host Grant Paulsen. "And that was that.

"I don't have words for this. I had a Pro Bowl year. I was a captain in year one, and this year I thought I improved on everything and I did a slap in the face and get released. I gave it my all and put my heart into it every single week to the best I could. I guess it says a lot about the organization."

"Different strokes for different folks," Swearinger said. "That's been my whole life. Different strokes for different folks. At the end of the day you got to keep grinding first and stay true to who you are and never let no one bring you down, no matter what the circumstances may be."

Swearinger said on the radio that Gruden agreed with wanting to run different coverages at times.

"You tell us you want to run it, well you're the head coach," Swearinger said. "We want to run it too because we want to make plays. ... That's the type of organization we was in."

Swearinger also said after the game that he probably watched more film than the coaches. He told 106.7 The Fan that he often texted coaches, including Manusky around 1 a.m. or so while watching film, pointing out strategies he felt could work. And, Swearinger told the show, Manusky told him two weeks ago that he wanted him on his staff when he was done playing.

Swearinger was voted a captain last season, but said coaches didn't want him as one this season. He said he was in a three-way tie to be a captain, but coaches opted for others.

"It's not rocket science why I wasn't captain," Swearinger told the show. "I'm a vocal guy, passionate guy that wants to win. If the coaches feel I'm too smart or a weapon as far as my smarts are concerned ... they got to release the guy that has knowledge or has respect in the locker room I guess."

But Swearinger said he's at peace.

"I was shocked. But I'm peaceful, because at the end of the day, I gave my heart and full effort into trying to help the team win," he said. "That's all I can ask for. That's how I was taught and brought up, whatever you do, do wholeheartedly so you don't regret it. I did everything wholeheartedly. I don't regret nothing."

Swearinger was named an alternate to the Pro Bowl and joked on the radio that he'd wear his South Carolina Gamecocks helmet if he ended up playing in the game.

He could be signed by another team this week.

After being released, Swearinger said he told his defensive back teammates to "keep grinding."

One teammate, defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, tweeted, "Greg manuski called a great game" after the Redskins arrived home after Saturday's loss and Swearinger's subsequent comments.

"I've been in this game a long time and seen a lot of things," Swearinger said. "It's a different mindset when talking about a defensive back who's been in the game a while and a D-lineman that hasn't been in the game a while. He's a young player, doesn't really know about the calls in the back end. He said the right thing.

"Jonathan Allen had a great game; why wouldn't he say that after a great game? But he doesn't play in coverage and he never knows what's going on in the back end. I'm taking up for my players and guys going out to war with me. ... All the guys in the back end who feel the same about how we play defense. That's all it is."

I've always loved me some Swearinger since he came out of college. I wouldn't be opposed to adding him at all and having him and Joyner running our backend. However. it might take a bit for him to get up to speed and that increases the chances of busted coverage and in the playoffs that can be the difference of losing and winning by one busted coverage.

I only caught the game thru NFL Redzone but it looked like Joyner got hurt towards the end. Any word on how serious that was?

I heard on the radio that he complained that the DC opted not to play zone against a backup QB. And he's right about that IMO.

Blaine Gabbert folks. He's the guy the Jags decided NOT to keep over Bortles.

Yeah, Swearinger is right. Gabbert sucks - and this is coming from a die-hard Mizzou fan.

Like all players this time of year, Swearinger, who has one year left on his contract, is subject to waivers once he's officially released.

The veteran was having one of the best years of his six-year career patrolling the back end of the Redskins defense, compiling 53 tackles, 10 passes defended and four interceptions. Pro Football Focus' 11th rated safety should find a home in short order, possibly with a playoff team that needs help in the secondary (perhaps a team like Kansas City).

https://www.therams.com/news/injury-report-12-24-todd-gurley-lamarcus-joyner-remain-day-to-day

Lamarcus Joyner left Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. McVay said Joyner is also day-to-day.

“His ankle was good,” McVay said. “It’s going to be a day-to-day deal, but everything checked out pretty clean. Got that thing rolled up on a little bit, but I think the way he attacks his rehab this week, we’ll be day-to-day with him, but I expect him to be able to be in good shape. But we’ll see how he responds when these guys get back in here on Wednesday.”

From what I gather, he's just a guy who speaks his mind. He previously complained about practices being too lax. A guy who wants to practice harder? Not sure I see problem with that. But as they say, there's two sides to every story. The truth might be somewhere in the middle. I'm sure McVay has a good rapport with his old boss. He oughta give him a call and see what's really up with the guy. Not sure how long it would take him to get up to speed in Wade's defense. But he could provide some quality depth and he's had a good season.

The only issue I see is Swearinger complained about playing man and said he and his teammates are much better looking at the QB. Wade usually likes his guys to play man.
Wade usually likes his guys to play man.
That used to be true but the last quarter of the season we have been playing exclusively zone

Gabbert does suck, why not trust as DJ calls it a supremely talented back end of the defense to play man to man? If Moreau doesn't get grabby there isn't a penalty to keep the drive going. The call worked, the players didn't execute.

He acts like he is gods gift to football. There is a reason he hasn't stuck with a team and it isn't because Washington being Washington.

Assuming we win against SF, he'd have three weeks of practice to get up to speed. Wade runs a scheme built to be simple to allow his guys to play fast. I think a vet like Swearinger could get up to speed in three weeks. It also helps that he played for Wade in Houston. Wade was the DC in Houston when they drafted D.J. in the 2nd round.

You could say the same thing about every play in NFL history. If the players executed better, the call would have worked. Swearinger is on the money. Gabbert is a bad QB. If you play man, you put more pressure on your secondary (a secondary built almost entirely around players who are better in zone coverage). Put the pressure on Gabbert to make the right read and an on-time throw. It's justifiable to not run zone against Brady or Brees on a key third down, but with a guy like Gabbert, you challenge him. He's well known for throwing late, staring down targets, and being a "see it, throw it" QB.
