Did two rookie first rounders just violate the NFL gambling rules?

By your definition, any two players could make a bet on any NFL outcome or proposition with impunity. That is clearly not allowed.

That's what I am saying. I contend that it clearly is allowed.

this sort of thing, bets between 2 players that are friends, probably occurs more often..2 opposing RBs making wager on most yards in a game, 2 wrs betting on receptions etc.

Most are probably made by more veteran players and kept on the DL, than 2 rookies flapping their gums because they don't know better

Yep, it's an "off the books" no money held in escrow, bet between friends.

You got to admit, though.... advertising the "gentlemen's bet" through the media and admitting the monetary value of the bet was a dumb move. I can see the argument our resident Avenger is making too.

So if Travis Kelce got a tip from his brother that Jalen Hurts was going to miss a game, and he used that information to bet with another player on the outcome of an Eagles game, that would be ok because no bookie, casino or betting site was involved?

I don’t think you really think that, do you?

I don't think NFL players should bet on their sport period. These 2 were not under contract as NFL players yet.

No cash will pass hands. Blake Corum will be offensive rookie of the year. Moot point.

Which performance did they bet on? This isn't the first time bets like this have been made and it has been determined to be fine. IIRC Baker Mayfield had to pay off Barkley on a similar bet and there was no action by the NFL.
Who is going to win offensive player of the years is based on performance.

They had to call off the bet - there may be some gray area but the bet is close enough to a lot of the wording that there is no way they can keep that bet on.

They are drafted not signed yet so no binding contract attaching them to the team. Not sure if a future payout as an NFL employee made prior to the contract signing is grounds for investigation. Does entering the draft imply they intend to be an NFL employee and carry some legal agreement language attached to the declaration of eligibility? That may be interesting to read, I guess we will all learn something from this eventually

Prior acts can be punished by the NFL.

We’ve seen this players with drug issues be suspended or put into the mandatory testing protocols and those with violence issues basically be given a strike even though a suspension hasn’t been levied.

I also think the NFL will communicate with the teams in question to ensure the guys are properly informed and they’ll publicly cancel the bet. Suspending them would be a bad look for the NFL after such a well received draft especially as most casual fans have no understanding of how the NFL has handled issues like prior acts in the past.

In many US jurisdictions, even a bet between friends is not legal.
