At the ripe old age of 34, DeSean Jackson has a terrible resume his last 2 seasons as a professional WR.

2020
Philadelphia: Games played 5, Receptions 14, Yards 236, YPC 16.9, Longest catch 81, TD 1

2019 Philadelphia: Games played 3, Receptions 9, Yards 159, YPC 17.7, Longest catch 53, TD 2

2018 Buccaneers: Games played 12, Receptions 41, Yards 774, YPC 18.9, Longest catch 75, TD 4

He balled a little bit like his old self in 2018 but his most recent 2 seasons have been plagued by injuries and a huge drop in production.

Even if you throw in his 2017 stats there are red flags showing he's declined from the WR he was from 2013 to 2016.

2017
Buccaneers: Games played 14, Receptions 50, Yards 668, YPC 13.4, Longest catch 41, TD 3

The good news is McVay and his guru trainer Reggie Smith will prepare and train Jackson differently than he was during the last 2 seasons.

They will try their best to keep him fresh with their own training regime in 2021 and he probably will not get any snaps in the coming preseason.

The bad news is Jackson has been on the back 9 of his career since the 2017 season ended. We can be honest and agree, that was a log time ago.

There is little doubt that DeSean will train and prepare for 2021 on a different level than he did the last 2 seasons under the guidance of the Rams training staff.

There is also no guarantee that the Rams methods will assure us he's going to last the duration of a 17 game season in 2021.

This is obviously why the Rams selected a similar type rookie WR deep ball specialist (insurance) Tutu Atwell with their first pick #57 overall in the 2nd round of the 2021 NFL draft.

The 2 most exciting and unpredictable WR's for the Rams in 2021 will be DeSean Jackson and Tutu Atwell. They are the deep threat field stretching additions the Rams have been missing the last 2 seasons.

The best news is that he was healthy at the end of last year and showed he can still bring it. (Don't take my word for it, McVay pointed it out). And he is healthy now. So we'll see what happens.

The way his contract is structured says it all...

The Rams only believe he'll be able to contribute on a part time basis to the offense. That's why we have Tutu.

I think what you are trying to say is DJ has had almost 3 years of free time to watch film, perfect his route running, and practice with the Juggs machine, which means we will see the best DJ ever. And we got this at a dirt cheap price due to the lack of recent stats showing how improved his game is.

Did I get that right?

We need Brown thru week 10. Tutu will need to be ready to take over from there if needed.

Doom and gloom side of things. What if DJ is injured once again and Tutu is a bust? Hopefully Van can step up and take over as the deep threat. Or maybe Harris can take the accelerated course to being a limited route running deep threat jump ball type.

I hope it works out. McVay has emphasized the need for a deep threat this offseason and how important it is to make the offense fire on all cylinders. This is supposed to be a Super Bowl season. The best they came up with was an oft injured 34 year old WR and a 150 lb rookie? Not that impressive for a position that is supposed to be an integral part of the offense.

I think he saw the train wreck that was the eagles, got paid, and said “ya know, I’m gonna take some time off and not risk really hurting myself for this crappy eagles team”...

Even if Tutu is a bust, he will be able to run in a straight line really, really fast - Ted Ginn was a colossal bust and still carved out a nice role during his career, including catching a deep pass in the NFCCG that somehow LaMarcus Joyner could not intercept.

Yes sir... You got the gist of my post @TexasRam (y)

Yeah I have a feeling DJax isn't gonna disappear this year. The quality of this wideout group, I just think he will be at his best so it's going to be interesting to see what that is. He's fallen so far off the radar in recent years that nobody expects much from him. Really it's a sneaky good signing in that way, lots of room for surprise.

And hell even if he does disappear we still have two young guns duking it out for the slot job in Jefferson and Tutu. What a huge difference from last year knowing we were going to have to endure Reynolds. Competition is gonna sort shit for us there no matter what, that's for sure.
