Speaking over the weekend, Rams coach Sean McVay said “I look at it as we’ve got two starting (running) backs."

McVay's comments somehow flew under the radar over the weekend, including from this website. “Those guys are great complements (to) one another, but I see them as both starting-caliber players," McVay said of Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson. "We need to get them involved. They need to be on the field. I think it’s healthy for them to be able to supplement one another.” It is certainly an eye-opening, provocative comment, one that is impossible to ignore but also difficult to take entirely at face value.

McVay has gently questioned Henderson's durability in the past then acquired Sony Michel on the eve of last season. Henderson did play over Michel until injury issues once again tripped him up. Sidelined for the first three games of the playoffs, Henderson did manage to take seven touches from a struggling Akers in the Super Bowl. The Rams coaching staff's love for Akers is clear, but Akers remains a wild card as he tries to get closer to 100 percent following last season's inspiring-but-ineffective return from a torn Achilles' tendon.

Jourdan Rodrigue reports the backs have been "splitting first-team snaps pretty evenly so far."

Neither Hendo nor Akers has shown durability we can/should trust…and Williams is “stepping” right into it as well.

I would not be surprised if each of those guys ends up starting at some point. It took the Rams 21 games in 23 weeks to win it all last year. When it comes to our starters, I expect less guys to be to able to start every game than those who don’t.

L.A. sent New England 2022 sixth-round and 2023 fourth-round picks. For most NFL teams it would not look to have been a big cost but when you have a Snead as the GM having a 4th & a 6th might bring good talent to the future rosters.

Again this 2021 trade had to be made due to the constant & numerous injuries that the Rams RB's have had more many seasons now.

Hopefully, this new season with a new OC Liam Coen, new RB coach Ra'Shaad Samples & two new assistant offensive coaches will help this INJURY maligned RB unit finally remain healthy. McVay now has five RB's who have very good skills that could be used in the passing game. IMO this talent needs to be employed big time! One very good reason I suggested having only 5 active WR's on the MR53 with two WR on the PS when the regular season begins.

Go big in numbers in the RB unit unlike yrs in the past, in capturing that pass-receiving talent they currently have with these RB's. I see the need to cut that large grouped type #6 WR's. Several of those cut WR's will be available to sign back to the PS. I suggest also looking in the RB unit for your Returners & ST aces. You know those 5 WR's will be screaming wanting the ball, less of them means more balls to what's left.

I go to training camp & get a different view than most. BunbaRam does an excellent job in his views. Even then you go around & talk to Fans & opinions vary.

I can see what your saying & I can keep it very simple from what my view is.

Jacob Harris really has not practiced much,so I can not say much there.I know his talent & his size.If you want to talk about Sneads draft picks there is an example of his 2021 class.
Then there is Jake Funk who was drafted after him ? Who is better & who do The Rams keep. Just a question & view.

Then watching a guy like McCutcheon. The dude wasn’t even drafted. Then I can add Jack Snyder who IMO will make the 53.There you go on your OLine.- we have 3 games & lights go on,so things will change Bigtime.

Sony - loved the trade & the value. Say what you want. I will never change my mind on the Trade. Then the question I have . Do The Rams get a Comp Pick back from the trade in 2024?

Williams was a steal.Like I said this kid liked Williams more than Akers. I don’t agree, but HENDO will either bring The Rams a Comp pick or is resigned. Feel strongly about that.

To think Sean Mcvay doesn’t have tough choices is an Understatement.
I can’t tell you what is going to happen. I think The depth a RB is a HECK of a lot better than 2021 even when The Rams had Sony.
— add what is the value of a RB? CJ Anderson sure looked good in a Rams uni.Took The Rams to the SuperBowl. Sony beat us & one one for The Rams.

The practice squad will have 2 Rb’s in the stable. Jake Funk could be one of them, but his value on special teams is huge & how he makes the 48 each week.

I heard Mcvay live talk about it as a kid was going. I love coach ,I love you Mcvay,Dad who is that. It was not fun to listen to,but pay back I’m sure for what an AZZ I can be at events.

HENDO is going to just be rotated in and out,but it will depend mainly on personal, feel, & game situation.

He also talked about liking Jake Funk.
Williams was not mentioned.Injust saw him for the first time & he looked good.

Calis actually looked better Thursday than Wed. I still think he doesn’t make the team.Tutu Atwell will be a nice KR guy. Powell was looking good,so I’d say the opposite of you with more WR than RB’s.
JJ Koski is a player no Rams Fans really even know. Though he is going into his 3rd- 4th season. He is always making plays & Fans are like who is he. Last season he got his taste of coffee & had a hard time under pressure. Fumbled a PR. I believe after that The Rams signed Powell ?

He still is a solid WR with good hands. He is better than Akers. McCutchen has upside .KC he has speed & size. Maybe an inside gunner.Jacob Harris type.

.

Is Cam Akers healthy? Yes? Then the Rams have a fantastic rb room. Henderson is perfect for the slasher role.

Not sure what people are worried about. I guess they just like worrying.

.

Amazingly true. The worry is not who The Rams have on there roster. It is how do they get down to 53? The more depth the more players get signed by other teams.

The coaching staff is sort of the same way. I look at around the Chargers as an example. I think I’m getting tickets now for today(free ?) and see Blue-Eyes,SJD69,&G.Everett.
Went last summer & loved watching Cooks.Just an excellent NFL journey man. That roster & defense is stacked as well.

Between the 2 there is nothing like The Rams experience.

I'm still pissed Williams got hurt. This just stretches out the Henderson experiment. Sooner that dude is a third down back the better.

And re: McVay talking him up I think it's coachspeak. McVay annoys the shit out of me with his complete disregard of what power backs can offer, but he is no fool. He knows damn well he can't rely on Hendy. He's probably got Williams' return highlighted and circled on his calendar. I mean enough already. Definition of insanity and all that.

Admittedly, I like Henderson more than many here; and I don't think he will be re-signed.

As to the durability, Hunt has missed 17 games over the past three seasons. Henderson has missed 9 games.

Their rushing stats are pretty-even.
I get that missed games is the only metric we have, but it's still a bad metric. How many games did Henderson play on but then was unavailable by half time due to injury. If I had to guess I would say at least 9. 8 of Hunt's 17 missed games were due a suspension in 2019. Assuming that acting like a worthless piece of shit is behind him, you don't have to worry about that moving forward.

McVay definitely values quick, zone running and pass catching backs in his offense and while there was room for power backs in the last few iterations of his offense over the years, McVay has basically shouted from the rooftops (and Jourdan has been repeating this constantly this offseason from the draft, to OTAs, to training camp) that the transition to a high volume pass attack with RBs is what is happening. McVay wants RBs who can split wide, run a variety or routes, pass pro (or at least chip out of empty) and make plays in space. He's all in on these guys and that's why they didn't consider drafting a power guy or even picking one up as an UDFA.

As long as Stafford's arm holds up, we're a high volume passing attack now. Even more so than last year. I expect the lowest RB carries this year since McVay got here.

I wouldnt trade Henderson for Hunt straight up even if guaranteed that both would remain healthy.
And being that Hunt is probably more likely to get hurt than Hendo, I dont see why they would want to downgrade the RB position

Just hope there were no wet spots. My wet spot was in The SuperBowl win.

WOW - what a game & to come of the injured list to be one of the biggest reason The Rams won.

What a horrible player & so injury prone. LMAO

That is very interesting.

This philosophy/scheme will be greatly dependent on the offensive line as much as on Stafford. At times the cringe-worthy poor pass blocking backfired on the Rams in the heavy pass sets. It also can give the Rams a big mismatch advantage thus making it a double-edged sword. Stafford can make it a big advantage if protected.

I do believe the pass blocking and run blocking will be improved this year. I think Noteboom's run blocks better than Whit did and holds up in pass pro close to equaling Whit. Bruss looks like he can be a solid upgrade at RG. A healthier Hav and stronger Edwards round out the improved offensive line. Still, I think and hope McVay may have learned his lessons and will not abandon the run. Having Akers healthy will also help the run game. I want to see the RB screen game get back to the Gurley days.

A healthy offense will give McVay all the available options of a balanced offense. He just has to keep defenses guessing and not get into a rut/routine play calling. The RBs with the ability to run, block and catch (route running) ablity gives McVay more options.

WTF are you talking about. Speak english dude.

Darrel Henderson is a solid Rams RB & to think any different is PURE BS!

He helped win The Rams a SuperBowl as well,so at SOFI Stadium win he puts on his ring he should be
Proud of his accomplishments.

I know I am & thankful he got himself ready to have a solid game & one of the biggest catches in the game.

I don’t see Akers being a good pass blocker at all. HENDO pass a nice job for his size.

As the post states or ask the question.
Darrell Henderson is a duo RB & has been from his Memphis Days.

I saw Hollins & he is big(tall) dude. If you see Kendall Blanton he is huge.Hopkins was running through walk-through being very loose & confident.

Ram Fans who want to look at Henderson. Then also have to worry about Tyler Higbee.

Saw Cooper Wednesday,Thursday. Friday he was not suited up for walk throughs.
I’m afraid of injuries period. It your talking David Edwards. IMO this is his last season with The Rams.He doesn’t look improved, but AD99 will make any NFL player look bad.

AD99 looks faster than I have ever seen in a training camp.
