Why can't we do that any more?
I think it is a combination of several factors;

The offensive line is just not as good as it was in sustaining pass protection for the time needed to get your receivers downfield.
As pointed out, our young running backs aren't quite as good at picking up the blitz, (which has led to some of the turnovers by Goff).

When our receivers get downfield they are not as sure-handed as Cook was when he was on top of his game.

It definitely appears by the play selection over all that McVay is doing a great job of utilizing the talent he has.

He's using the defense to cause more three-and-outs and running the ball more to control the time clock.

He's not doing the shootouts like he used to.

Running the ball, ball control and a stout defense is a tried-and-true method for winning games.

I know Adam Carriker threw it over 70 yards one time...so throwing far aint all this there is to being a QB, which I think you know.
Ha. No doubt. I remember my high school offensive coordinator saw me chucking a football 60 yards before practice and was impressed. He insisted I get some reps at QB going forward to see what I could do. That lasted a day. Something about my throwing motion did not agree with shoulder pads. I did get to play some scout QB when we played mobile QBs who couldn't throw. :ROFLMAO:

At 1:15 you can kinda see how far he can throw it. Looks like he put most of what he could into that throw. It was about 65 yards in the air.

Crazy how much better the offense looked in McVays first year. Even Goff looks better. I wonder what happened.

That's also in a game, and he's throwing to a WR. It's easier to throw for distance without a pass rush and without having to worry about hitting your WR in stride. Goff threw that ball without a lot of arc. I would think he'd put a lot more arc on it if he were going for distance. Regardless, it was just curiosity. As for the offense, it's a combination of our personnel getting worse and teams adjusting to McVay.

Goff had a lot of great throws in that game -

Gurley was a superior pass blocker that we don’t have now

Watkins and Cooks played the burner role that we don’t have now

Oline was really experienced and solid then but they’re getting better

IMO, it’s McVay giving a fairly young Oline and Pass Blockers a break from slow developing plays.

The narrative that McVay is protecting Goff from turning it over from pressure is a reach when you look at the current personnel...I don’t like it but what are you gonna do?

i remembered the 67 yarder to Sammy...just like you said...flatter trajectory. No Oompa Loompa moon balls.

Yeah, it's easier to have an explosive offense when you have a legitimate deep threat, a stud HB (who is an elite player in all three phases), and a reliable OL. We're getting closer, but we don't have a legitimate deep threat or a HB who excels in all three phases right now.

You think we look to the draft for one or just hope Van turns into that?

I'm not sure. I wouldn't be surprised if we looked to the draft. We'll need to replace Reynolds. I expect Van to take the #3 spot, but McVay likes to rotate the WRs. I would expect he'd like to have a speedster in the rotation.
