Both Hill and NRC will be do for large cap increases in 2020. Both might be decent cap bait. They will cost about $7M combined next year. Williams is under contract through 2020 for less than $700K.
The pass breakup Williams had across the middle highlighted the differences between Hill and Williams. Hill probably doesn't make that play as he has shown repeatedly. Williams showed better coverage ability as he was able to match the receiver out of his break something Hill struggles to do. Why do you think he's been a backup his whole career? Williams was far more consistent in his coverage and he and Ramsey were a big reason Jimmy G was getting sacked.
Williams has shown he's better than both NRC and Hill as he can play both slot and boundary, while both of the others really can play only one position.
Some have questioned my use of physical metrics in my player evaluations. Williams showed why they are important along with being validated on his play tapes. Play radius, speed, burst and agility were all highlighted on that play as well as his decent hands for INT's, as he had 5 INT's and 19 PD in 2017. David Long will really have to compete well to earn his start which is a good thing.
Williams came out of a small program, (U.A.B) and was looked at as being undersized. But most evaluators only looked at his height, not his comparative length, and vertical. They never bothered to scout his play film, or discounted it as "low competition". All things in total must be considered, i.e. his physical metrics and how they translated in his play.
As I've said if this was a cover two zone secondary, Hill would look better as both his metrics and play have borne that out.
If they are going to keep one of NRC and Hill I think it would be Hill. He gives them a decent backup as a #4 CB though he's being paid a bit high for that. though he's $1M cheaper than NRC.
