Darious Williams ready to go for Rams if Troy Hill can't

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – It is possible that cornerback Troy Hill could play Saturday against the 49ers with a cast over his surgically broken right thumb, but his ability to do so will largely depend on his pain tolerance as the condensed week goes on.

If Hill can't go, second-year defensive back Darious Williams is prepared to step up in his place.

"Oh yeah, for sure," Williams said. "Obviously you want Troy to be back. He's one of the leaders, especially in the secondary. But if Troy needs time to heal, that's why I'm here, so I'll be ready."

Should that scenario unfold, it would follow the same procedure that Los Angeles went with against Dallas.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said Hill fracture his thumb when he tackled Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott on a 3rd and 3 with 7:35 left in the first quarter. Hill was replaced by Williams on the next defensive snap, and Williams went on to play 61 of the team's 70 defensive snaps. Williams' snap count and five total tackles he finished with were both season-highs.

Williams initially recorded his first career interception late in the first quarter, only to have it wiped out by offsetting penalties against the Rams and the Cowboys. Despite this, he still ended up with the highest coverage grade of any Rams defensive player against the Cowboys, according to scouting service Pro Football Focus.

"I thought he did a nice job," Rams head coach Sean McVay after Sunday's game. "Really, just in terms of his competes, his toughs, you look at the way that he was able to make some plays. I thought he made a nice play – any time that you get it called back – but it looked like he made a good break on the one that was an interception. But then it ended up getting overruled and you can’t do anything about that."

Williams only saw action on special teams in the first game against the 49ers back in Week 6, but he's well aware of the challenges they present heading into Saturday's game.

"They're just a strong team all-around – offense, defense and special teams, they're good," Williams said. "They added Emmanuel Sanders, another key receiver. It's just a solid team, but we're just as good. Just go out there and play our game and the way we're capable of."

I wouldn't think Hill playing in a cast and with a lot of pain would be a better option than Williams..

"We're just as good." Love that attitude.
Maybe not quite as good (lines). But still. . .

The Rams are as good, at their best level, and will win this week. Week to week they have had inconsistent focus and intensity....that is on the coaches--mostly

I definitely want both Darius and David Long ready to ball with Javon in 2020. If Troy Hill becomes a cap casualty, we need some young blood ready to roll with our designated shutdown artist.

Sure, why not. Playoffs ain't happening. So this is a good time for us to see what these guys can do. With Ramsey on the other side, he'll get plenty of action his way.

I like Williams and have since TC. He's got potential but came in pretty raw. Although he's in his second year, he joined the Rams in Oct. of last year. I think he has potential as a slot CB. Playing on the outside he's got better speed, agility and vertical than Hill despite being about the same height. He also has longer arms so combined with his better vertical ability he has a better playing radius than Hill. It will also serve him well inside as a slot CB to match up with TE's and tall slot receivers.

He's also faster, with better height and arm length, giving him a better play radius with about the same agility as NRC. IMO he was signed to compete with NRC and give the Rams options at the end of the year. If he can show he can play well outside, he can also give them an option as a possible #3 CB, though you really need 4. The Rams actually scouted him with Snead being in attendance at one of the workouts in 2018.

Can’t stand this attitude with 2 games to go, that we cannot go to San Francisco, get a win against a reeling, beat up team, have Green Bay beat Minnesota, sans Dalvin Cook.

I’d love to see how many of you guys would then say, “No way we beat Arizona, and Minnesota loses to Chicago” which would put us in the playoffs.

Not sure what Cooks status would be for that game, but I just don’t get the “woe is me. Season is over” crap.

If Williams can show he can play, NRC and his contract (possibly) become expendible.
Williams will need to do more than play well in one game to unseat Hill, IMO. There may be a competition next year between the two but tomorrow’s game will not be the end of Hill if he can’t play because of an injury.

I didn't see DPI on his INT last week. He seems very competitive and confident. Let's see what Williams can do.

I like Williams for a variety of reasons. He's got the physical talent to play both inside and the boundary at CB. With both NRC and Hill due for big contract escalations next year I think the Rams really want to see what they have in Williams. This is his chance to audition for a role as the #3 CB on the roster next year.

I don't see the doom and gloom about playing the Niners this time around. They have shown inconsistent play in their secondary. They beat the Rams last time around because of Henderson's fumble. That fumble doesn't happen and it's a whole different game.

They will be facing a better o-line as well. As long as the o-line holds up and the Rams don't turn the ball over they can win this game as they can beat anyone. The Rams have beaten themselves as much as they have been beaten. Issues on the o-line glossed over last year came back to haunt them.

Frankly I'm more concerned about Goff's thumb than anything else. If he's really 100% they can beat the Niners.

The Vikes are facing a very tough game with the Packers. Then if the Rams win and the Vikes lose this weekend IMO the advantage goes to the Rams. The Vikes will face a very good Bear defense and a team that will be motivated in knocking a division rival out of the playoffs. The Cards will be just playing the season out. IMO the rivalry level the Vikes would be facing is much higher than what the Rams will face against the Cards.

This is the season this weekend. No matter how the playoff picture turns out, finishing 10-6 is nothing to be ashamed of. Too many mistakes at crucial times....something that happens with a young team. But its something to build on going forward. They know they have an elite core of players. This team is built they simply need to finish growing up together to play as a team.

If the Rams come out like they did last week... This one is over by halftime,... again. I never saw the offense get even a whiff of a clue the last time they played them. I know they're hurt, but so are the Rams.

I hate it, but I just don't have any faith in this year's team. Weird, because I felt the Rams would win every game last year. Right up until the final whistle of the SB. This season has been a cruel reminder of seasons past and I really hope this isn't the trend going forward. The league figured this team out way too quick for my liking...... Damnit.

Having gotten that off my chest....

Da Bears beat us last season !!

I think Shanihan owns Mcvay though !! Yes The Rams can win !! I just think at the end Mcvay gets out coached. Just my prediction, but want cheering for The Rams big time !!

Rams beat Falcons on the road,Niners lost at home. The Rams need to take care of there end of it all ?? Cowboys game, I saw some good things. Was not as bad as the score said.

I hate to question guys when it comes to injury but I am surprised Hill can't go with a cast.

IMO this is an example of what ails our team. We need some Jack Youngblood, Ronnie Lott type leaders who wouldn't allow themselves to be sat in a game where they are still in the playoff mix.

Hate to be negative here but this is just another example of why we can't trust this team.

Clearly he's not hurt I mean he had surgery a few days ago. It's all because he and nobody on the team has the heart to play :D

Some ups and downs for him but I thought overall Williams showed some promise for his first start.
