Just curious, as I dont really know the answer, and am too lazy to look it up. What would happen if the Rams put a 1st round tender on him, and a team without a 1st round pick signs him to a monster offer sheet? Would they just get their highest pick?

If I was any team drafting at #15 or later I would rather give up a 1st round pick for a budding superstar that will be relatively cheap vs a maybe 1st rounder. 50 % of 1sts are busts and I am sure that figure is higher if you only looked at the back half of the 1st round.

Totally agree & either way it should workout well for The Rams.Anything less than a 1st rd pick would be crazy.

—Thanks Les Snead (McSnead) for finding a player like D.Williams & Mcvay for the development.

Like I keep say about the Comp Picks of The Rams 2020.Add him to the list as Above & Beyond.Ebukham,Reynolds,& Everett I thought would’ve added more value as well.I think all 3 will have solid NFL careers as well. You can’t keep everyone, but developing & reloading is the Key to Success in The NFL.

That’s actually a very good question.I’m no specialist on any real NFL matter.Dictate logic in a common sense basis. — with that I’m not a good poster to answer it.Would enjoy the answer though. - thanks

Starting to think that right of first refusal might benefit the Rams in the long run. A team would surely sign Williams to an offer sheet - but for how much?

There's simply no way a team is going to sign a 5'9" CB with one good year of production for more than $8-10 million per year. This would obviously be a problem for 2021, but if we can figure out how to make it work, we just match whatever a team offers him and call it a day. We'd lock him up long term and save at least $5 million if he balls out again.

I certainly not foresee that scenario. Certainly what DW's new agent will want in a new contract will have a major barring if the Rams can sign DW to a long-term contract. There is a very good chance that DW's future plan will price himself right out of LA too.

So if the team wants to give up a 1st round pick for DW this season, the position of this first-round selection will carry much weight in the Rams decision on the matching offer.
I do not see any major problems or concerns with our inside LB'ing cadre to the point of utilizing a 1st rd selection on this unit. Rams have been planing for Micah Kiser to be the starting MLB'er for the last seasons so I see no reason to think that a healthy Kiser would still not be the plan in 2021. Whats changed?

On top of that MLB Troy Reeder has proven during the 2020 season to be a legit NFL MLB'er filling in for two seasons for the injured Kiser. Reeder only started 7 gms in 2020 but in those 7 gms, he has 53 tackles & 3 sacks!

Rams also have last year's starting ILB'er Kenny Young returning plus the late 2019 flashing star & the initial starting 2020 ILB'er Travin Howard coming back from injury. So with two former starting ILB'er returning to the ILB'ing unit along with the two starters who carried the Rams into 2 playoff games, additionally 2 younger ILB'ers entering their second season with the Rams Christian Rozeboom & Moncrief makes this unit look pretty good.

If the Rams have both Troy Hill & Darious Williams depart the CB unit the ILB'ing unit will look outstanding when compared. I am sure Snead will not go ILB'er over a possible starting corner in the draft.
Sorry but I see a very weak ILB unit for the Rams. While Howard is still an unknown due to injury and Kiser was a decent run stopper when not hurt...Young and Reeder were decent depth ILBs at best. We need a stud ILB if we want to compete with the big boys. IMO it’s the #2 need only behind a new OC.

I do sincerely love D-Will, however, it's still a definite possibility that someone will give up that 1st rounder for him and make him an offer that we cannot match. With that in mind, is there a corner in the latter first round that peaks anyones interest? Maybe Samuel Jr? Horn? I don't know heck of a lot about them currently, but I assume some of you may. Could even pivot and take and Edge or Center here and pick up a CB in the 2nd.

At the very least, we would have a cost controlled young player for up to 5 years.

Horn is my pick if we somehow get a first. I do like Samuel Jr., though.

While I'd love to make fun of you, I don't actually know. However, I suspect that a condition of signing him would be the ability to give up a first rounder this year.

On November 20, 2020, before D.W. REALLY broke out ... BriansRams predicted this:

#31 --- D. Williams this time next year .... will be equally as good and valuable as J. Ramsey.
He doesn't posses the same ideal physical attributes ... but his football smarts and heart will put him on the same level of importance to the team, as J. Ramsey.

... a few of you scoffed and disagreed: https://ramsondemand.com/threads/my-prediction-from-observation.62768/

... but let's continue this conversation on 11/20/2021
Nah he's not that good. Bigger receivers jump over him and he's tentative when it comes to tackling. He's a good DB but Ramsey does it all.

A team without a 1st round pick would have to offer an alternate trade package that the Rams agreed to, like a 2nd round pick and an all pro center for example, but they would not be able to just say " sorry we don't have a 1st so we're not giving you one ".

Just wondering because Seattle doesnt have a 1st round pick, and although they likely dont have space either, that would make for an interesting sitch

1st round pick in 2022 is basically a 2nd round pick (value wise) in 2021, so I'm not sure how that is a fair outcome. Basically makes the player a 1st year tender for all teams with a 1st round pick, and a 2nd round tender for teams that dont.

Unless the new CBA changed the language I know before a team had to give it's original first round pick (or whatever round pick the tender is) and if they do not have their original pick for the round needed they can not put an offer in. Only exception is if they traded for another teams pick in that round and it is better than the original pick received.

So for reference, if Miami traded their original 1st rounder pick 18 they could still use the pick from Houston at #4 to put an offer sheet on a 1st round RFA. But if the Jets traded the #2 overall and got no other picks back they couldn't then use the #23 from Seattle to put a first round tender on a 1st round tender RFA.

That would make sense. Thanks for the clarification.
Team has 15th pick in draft and wants to sign a 1st round tender player, in theory could trade the #15 for the #32 and receive multiple picks to move down. Then only lose the #32. That CBA rule would totally prevent that.
