Rams 'hopeful' to get Brandin Cooks, Cooper Kupp back Sunday

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay left open the possibility on Monday that receivers Brandin Cooks and Cooper Kupp could clear concussion protocol in time to play against the Denver Broncos.

"They felt good today," McVay told reporters at the Rams' training facility. "They didn't have any symptoms or anything like that, so we'll go through the standing operating procedure and if everything checks out with our guys and with the doctors that are part of that process then we are hopeful to get these guys this week."

Cooks and Kupp entered the concussion protocol during the first half of Sunday's 33-31 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Cooks suffered a concussion in the second quarter after he caught an 18-yard pass that he went on to fumble when he was hit by safety Tedric Thompson. The play was nullified by a defensive holding penalty. The collision between Cooks and Thompson appeared to be helmet-to-helmet, but no flag was thrown.

McVay said he would seek clarification from the league about the play.

"I don't think there was any malicious intent on it," McVay said. "But there are things that are always geared toward the safety of the players and any of those head-to-head contact collisions are things that we want to try to avoid and that's something that they made a big point of."

McVay said that Kupp suffered the concussion in the two-minute drill to end the first half when he split two defenders for an 11-yard reception and appeared to hit his head on the ground when he was tackled by linebacker Barkevious Mingo. Kupp played the ensuing five snaps to end the half.

"To his credit, he was able to communicate to us that he wasn't feeling quite normal," McVay said.

Kupp finished with six catches for 90 yards and a touchdown. Cooks did not have a reception.

Second-year pro Josh Reynolds and undrafted rookie KhaDarel Hodge took over in their absence. Reynolds, a fourth-round pick from Texas A&M, had two catches for 39 yards and rushed for 10 yards on one carry. Hodge, from Prairie View A&M, had one catch for 14 yards.

If Kupp feels great, I'd let him play. I'd sit Cooks a week even if he feels great. That was a brutal shot and I'd rather rest him a week in a non conference game and get him back for the Niners. It's up to the doctors and players themselves ultimately though.

Hope they consider this as well.

Hard to imagine he’s symptom-free after getting KO’d like that. I trust they know what they’re doing though.

McVay always keeps you guessing. You never know Kupp could be fine but Cooks could need another week. Couldn't hurt to get Reynolds and Hodge some reps.

We need professionals like Brandon Cook.

We can't just let any kook out there on the field.

Depends on the KO.

I know watching MMA, some KOs are really bad. Honestly, some of it is just brain anatomy and how an individual brain deals with the shearing forces on contact. Others look bad, but once the person comes around, there's very little impairment and no side effects.

That's what's so hard about this.

What I'm encouraged about is that I have faith that McVay will find another way to win as opposed to relying on compromised players.

If they are playing, it's because they're good to go, not because we need them.

I haven't always had that faith with the Rams in the past...

Let Reynolds play! It clearly looked like a concussion so lets give Cooks time to fully recover. Its a long season and we need to see what we have in our WR #4.

The NFL fantasy lineup optimizer just took Diggs out of my lineup and put Kupp in. So apparently not only does the app expect Kupp to play, it also expects Wood's and Kupp to do better than Diggs. I thought that was weird, but good.

Well, Kupp is a beast.

Fair. Now I'm just wondering if I should pick up Cooks off waivers and complete the Goff and Co aerial offense. I don't have Gurley, a schmucky niner fan friend of mine does, so it won't be totally complete.

If you need a WR, I'd pick him up.

Does anyone know what the Concussion protocol is in the NFL?

I've been looking at the hit on Cooks again and it looks like the primary hit was to the left side of the neck, with the helmet to helmet secondary? There is a chance that he could have had a 'carotid punch', and as he wasn't aware of Thompson coming in, could have resulted in him being knocked out momentarily, and from the arm movement when he hit the ground he was obviously out.

If he's good to go, then I don't see any benefits in sitting him, if the doctors don't think he's good to go then he should sit. We have to remember this isn't the regime that kept playing Keenum after that concussion vs the Ravens. McVay IS NOT Fisher.

And he gave the lamest excuse after the game. Case looked like a drunk staggering home on the field. I couldn't believe he was out there. His slow reaction time ultimately cost the rams the game as he got sacked and lost the ball.

I had a lot of respect for Fisher, even when we were losing, but this one act really made me feel sick. Case should never have been on that field after being concussed.

how did you feel when martz left warner on the field against the giants in 2003? warner looked like a zombie in the first half there from what i saw in the highlights. left him out there against the ferocious giants line and kept calling pass plays.
