And ... while Robertson and Phifer were the Rams' two best #58 LBs, an honorable mention should go to ...
Mel Owens ... the expected 2025 Golden Bachelor ...
View attachment 71570 View attachment 71571

FYI ... @Loyal was one of the finalists for this season's Golden Bachelor. Just too damn handsome.
I loved Mel Owens. Played high school football when he was drafted/played. Loved his look...he just looked like a bad ass linebacker. Now, I played inside backer, but wanted Owen's number. Some kid on my team (Robert Frick) took 58. I was so pissed, so I settled on 53 for my jersey number...close enough, right?

Do Not Fuck With Mel Owens!

Problem with James Harris was, he never had a good playoff game. His best game was against the Vikings that year and that was checkered at best. He was not good against Washington and in 1975, when he got his chance against Dallas was awful before being pulled.

Now granted that was a combination of many things, but I remember him struggling against Washington as George Allen could still coach defense. Fortunately, Sonny Jurgensen served up the interception to Isiah Robertson after being hit by Merlin Olsen that clinched the Rams fist post season victory since 1951.
That pick Jamie Harris (I'm channeling Cosell) threw early in the NFCCG against Dallas was awful. He threw one more weak pass and was yanked but the die had already been cast on that miserable afternoon for the RAMS. The CBS telecast is on youtube and the great Vin Scully stated, "and the wolves are howlin' at James Harris". Starting the sore armed Harris was just one of many tactical errors Chuck Knox made during post season games that were detrimental to the RAMS Super Bowl aspirations in those years.

Funny I just responded very similar comments in another thread. Knox was snake bitten in the playoffs, but some of that was on him. He never allowed his QB's to audible plus working for Carroll Rosenbloom was not easy as CR, always let it be known who he felt should be the Rams QB.

Fred Dryer also said about Knox was, he never altered his gameplan when it came to postseason. Dryer said the teams knew what we were running and could stop come playoff time. When Malavasi was the Head Coach, Dryer said, "We knew Ray would try other things in the playoffs." Now I was never a Malavasi fan, but his defense in 1979 that sent Roger Staubach into retirement was epic with 4 DL and 7 DB's.

Slim pickings with this jersey number as far as google images. To me, the most notable is Doug Woodlief who spent most of his time with the RAMS (1965 - 1969) backing up Myron Pottios as MLB but he did start a total of 17 games for the 1967 and 1969 Coastal Division champions.

The Carl Ekern award, honoring the former Rams linebacker, is the Los Angeles Rams award given to the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, work ethic, and commitment to his teammates.

I realize Tom Fears played long before Any of our times ... except for @Loyal ... but he is the only Rams player to wear #55 who is in the Hall of Fame ...

Personally, I think those colors pop, and the horns on that helmet are perfect.

A lot of casual fans know this multi time All Pro for the footage of him getting trucked by the great Earl Campbell but what they don't know is that the LA RAMS later knocked Campbell out of that 10-6 September 1978 victory for Los Angeles over the Oilers in the Astrodome after he had gained only 77 rushing yards.
Loved me some Isaiah Robertson.

Notice how packed those stands were in the Coliseum? And probably 99% were Rams fans. Oh to dream of that coming back.

When #58 was the Number-for-the-Day, and Isaiah Robertson was noted, I mentioned the terrific 1971 Draft that netted the Rams Jack Youngblood, Isaiah Robertson and Dave Elmendorf ... all foundation players for one of the best defenses of the 1970s.

Mike Wilcher (#54) reminds me of another great Rams Draft in 1983.
Eric Dickerson, Henry Ellard, Mike Wilcher, Vince Newsome (S) and Doug Reed (DL) ... major contributors to a Rams team that was a consistent playoff-team from 1983-1989 ... strike shortened 1987 the lone exception.

Rick Kay got hurt in 1976 and this guy filled the void expertly.
