Colts sign Hoyer and Brissett to Contracts

The Indianapolis Colts have found their new backup quarterback.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the Colts are signing former New England Patriots backup QB Brian Hoyer to a three-year, $12 million contract. The pact includes $9 million guaranteed.
Hoyer now joins another Ex-Patriot, Jacoby Brissett in Indy. The veteran signal-caller is an ideal backup and mentor to the still-growing Brissett.

Hoyer, 33, has spent 11 seasons bouncing around the NFL, from New England to Pittsburgh to Arizona to Cleveland to Houston to Chicago to San Francisco and back to New England. The quarterback now joins his eighth NFL team. He's started 37 games throughout his career.
The $9 million guaranteed is a stellar payday for a backup who hopefully will provide more in the film room as a mentor than on the field as a player. Barring an injury to Brissett, Hoyer should reprise his role as a caddy, which he spent doing behind Tom Brady the last season and a half in New England.
After Andrew Luck's stunning retirement, the Colts will now press forward with Brissett as the starter and Hoyer as a veteran who can fill in during an emergency. There are worse QB situations in the NFL.
With backup Chad Kelly set to serve a two-game suspension to open the season, the Colts needed a veteran to fill the void. Given Hoyer's payday, we'd presume Kelly would come as the No. 3 option if he sticks around when his suspension is up.

Bortles is clearly more accomplished than Hoyer....anybody see Hoyer's Playoff debacle performance as the Texans QB a few years bacl??? Brutal!!!

I'm with PARam and others who opine that for the Rams anyway, the backup QB is insignificant, because if Goff is lost due to injury, so too are the Rams Playoff hopes. The Rams backup QB is like LifeJackets on a fishing trawler sailing in the Bering Sea....if the ship goes down, you're frozen dead, the life jacket is just a security blanket to help one sleep better during a storm.

Not every QB injury is season ending though. Many/most are short term, often just involving part of a game. It's important to have a guy who can step in who has faced first teamers and has shown that he can handle them, not just looked solid against guys who may never play an NFL snap.

Besides, we don't know what Bortles was promised when he came to the Rams. He might have been promised a year of McVay coaching or free agency. Perhaps not enforceable but it would be detrimental to break promises. I don't know what he was told, but clearly he came to the Rams at least partially for the tutelage. In exchange the Rams get an experienced back up really cheaply

Wow, not impressed by this signing whatsoever. Again, Hoyer is awful, but he has starting experience. Insane when it comes to backup QB's and I'm glad Bortles is the Rams backup and Wolford is on the practice squad as I view both options far better than Hoyer.

Hoyer has had some good moments and so not so good moments in the NFL. He can help Brissett and fill in for a few games. Great money for him as a backup and mentor.

I wonder if the Rams are even talking to teams about Bortles. A million a year for a QB who has playoff experience isn't exactly something you toss away without a huge incentive.

Just two weeks ago, the Colts were fully invested in Andrew Luck as their franchise quarterback. Now, they're investing in a future without him.

Indianapolis agreed to terms with recently anointed starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett on a two-year contract worth $30 million, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source. Brissett will earn $20 million guaranteed at signing, Rapoport added.

Brissett was entering the fourth and final year of his rookie deal, set to earn $2 million in 2019. With the new deal, Brissett is under contact through the 2020 season.

News of Brissett's deal came less than three hours after the Colts inked journeyman signal-caller (and fellow Tom Brady understudy) Brian Hoyer to a three-year, $12 million contract.

The Colts moved quickly to secure the future of their quarterback room without Luck, who announced his shocking retirement on Aug. 24. During Luck's impromptu retirement ceremony, both the quarterback and Colts brass expressed confidence that Brissett could be Indy's starting QB going forward.

Luck said of Brissett that evening, "I'm excited for the future of the Colts in large part because of Jacoby and also all the other men in that locker room." The Colts, it appears, are equally excited.

Brissett's taken a unconventional route to his second NFL contract. Drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2016 draft, Brissett started two games his rookie year in place of Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo. Ahead of the 2017 season, Indianapolis acquired him in a trade to bolster its QB room as Luck was dealing with what would be a season-ending shoulder injury. Brissett took over the starting job after Week 1 from Scott Tolzien and started 15 games that season, completing 58.8 percent of his passes for 3,098 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven picks.

When Luck returned for his Comeback Player of the Year campaign in 2018, Brissett was his backup. This year, he's Luck's successor.

By extending Brissett, Indianapolis has stabilized a QB position that could have been in flux had it waited until after this year to assess Brissett's status with the team. The Colts also avoid dealing with franchise-tag drama in 2020 by resolving Brissett's contract situation ahead of the 2019 campaign.

While Brissett doesn't cash in as the likes of Russell Wilson ($35M AAV) and Carson Wentz ($32M) did this offseason, the Colts signal-caller at least received a second contract, and a lucrative one at that. Though he ranks 19th among quarterbacks in average annual value in 2019 at $15 million per, Brissett is offered the opportunity with this contract to ensure himself the starting role in Indy for years to come and eventually cash in on a $30M-plus-per-year deal in the near future.

His first test comes in six days when his Colts take on the Los Angeles Chargers.

I'm really surprised at the Colts. They are locking themselves in without seeing the finished product. Brissett is relatively inexperienced for being in the NFL for 3 years. This is his 4th year and he's started only 17 games over his first 2 seasons with no starts last year. His best year was 2017 with 15 starts, throwing for around 3,100 yds. 13 TD's but 7 INT's. For that they extend him $30M for 2 years. I always say it's not the total amount of the contract but the guaranteed amount. His contract has $20M guaranteed insuring he will be carried both years regardless of play. What's the difference? Jacoby was under contract for only 2019 for $2M. With the Pats he started 2 games, threw for a total of 400yds combined with no TD's or INT's. So that is a combined experience of one season with mediocre numbers. Additionally, he didn't start at all last year. Why not play him on a one year $2M prove it year? This is a much bigger gamble than most realize. If Jacoby doesn't pan out they have set the franchise back by 3 years.

Hoyer is even worse for the Colts. He's signed for 3 years, contract value $12M, but again it's about the guaranteed money. His guaranteed money is $9M!! For a guy who didn't start a game, threw 2 passes completed one for 7 yards. In 2017 he played for two teams, his combined stats are, 6 starts, 1,287 yds, and 4 TD's and 4 INT's. His contract ensures he will be around for all 3 yrs.

They committed $42M for one mediocre inexperienced QB and one bad QB. If Jacoby is hurt or bombs this year the Colts are stuck. This is what desperate teams do.

Like the Hawks trading away Clark then getting Clowney on a one-year rental trade. Clark's production is better than Clowney, but he's a media darling. If they couldn't afford Clark how will they afford Clowney next year when the bidding war starts. If Clark couldn't get the Hawks to the Super Bowl how is Clowney? IMO the threat level for the Rams is the same, Clark or Clowney. What they are going to spend on Wilson and Clowney will impact the team they can build and keep around them.

I know a lifelong Colts fan. He recently had a stroke. I spoke with him recently and he is bummed. This situation may land him right back into the hospital.
