Oof, that's terribly boring. I sit here still wondering how AC/DC hasn't ever played. It's almost like they play Thunderstruck at every football game ever, but deny the band exists.

Or GNR with the reunion forming up. That would kill!

Yikes... Puppy Bowl during that halftime.

they really must get the most fru fru bands and singers most of the time just to bump the alright insane ratings for all the saps that don't like football but just watch for the free 20 minute concert on tv.

AC/DC would be a great choice. Black Sabbath is on tour right now... If you want pure over-the-top theatrics - KISS invented it.

U2, Foo Fighters, Metallica would all be better options than Coldplay!

My choice: The best band on earth just completed their 40th anniversary tour. Forget 'down the middle', let's add some class to halftime:

Foo Fighters would kick this gig right in the nuts, best show I've ever seen, and I've literally seen thousands of bands live, including every band listed here....

I wish they would just stop with the extremely long halftime. That game is already long enough with the commercials. I would venture most people get enough entertainment from those commercials and the movie trailers during the super bowl.

Strictly for all the non-football people watching. Gotta generate some extra income somewhere, have to expand until it bursts.

BTW, Rush is in my five best shows. Their sound, both times I saw them, was so good it felt like you were listening to a greatest hits CD with the headphones on. Badass musicians, no doubt.

Coldplay are a bunch of bed wetters. I can't stand them. Chris Martin has a very punchable face.

I like Coldplay.

Super Bowl performers are usually appealing to the masses. CP is pretty down the middle.
Better than the usual shtick of either modern R&B(whatever that is), hip-hop, bubble gum pop, country pop, or burnt out legendary rock artist stuff.

Bottom line, Coldplay sucks ass and should never even get a sniff at the SB.
I betcha they paid to get this gig, only way I could see them getting it...
I agree their sound was taylor-made for the early 2000's. I liked what they were doing then, don't really care now. I do think it's a nice choice that doesn't necessarily fit into the usual Super Bowl cookie cutter stuff.

Why they haven't had Linkin Park perform at half time is beyond me.

Coldplay may be the most boring band in all of existence. An already long halftime will now feel like an eternity. At least the prior performers had entertainment value.

Coldplay is one of those bands that doesn't really appeal to me, yet doesn't annoy me.

I'd like the Black Keys or Alabama Shakes. Maybe even Kings of Leon if they signed an agreement to NOT play Sex on Fire. U2 would be a choice that most agree with.

Some of these others though, I'm glad they don't play. I'd rather watch Katy Perry's breasts bounce across the stage again than a band from the '70s or '80s. Rush is the only band from that era that I know of than can still match the performances they used to put on. They're not cover band versions of themselves, they continue to put out new albums that push the band. JMO of of course.

Which is why they generally don't have heavy bands. It is about mass appeal. The same reason there is a constant emphasis on generating more offense in the same. Appeal to the simpletons.
