Coin Flip Deferral

I’m watching the Giant-Viking playoff game from last season and the Giants deferred to start the game. If I remember correctly this trend was started by McVay when he got the Rams job. My whole football watching life teams wanted to start the game with the ball before McVay. Am I mis-remembering? Do you think this has anything to do McVay’s record with going into the half with the lead? I do.

The deferral rule was put in place in 2008. Belichick and Asshole Face were some of the first who started deferring most of the time.

This league trend was already there before McVay became a HC.

I think deferring with the Morris defense is a bad idea. How many times has Mr Bend, then Break given the other team a 7 pt lead to start the game?

I do prefer kicking off and starting on defense.

Playing football in elementary, high school, college(Go Flames!) and being a youth coach for over 15 years now, I always prefer to go on defense first. To me, it just gives you more of a psychological advantage if you will, going into the second half.

Last year it just didnt matter. D gave up long drives so the 1st period was half over before we even got the ball. Plus the offense couldnt score 2 times in a row any way.

I never understood why the deferral rule had to be put into place. You had two choices, you could kickoff or receive, if you selected to kickoff, then you got the ball in the second half. So, why the deferral unless that also allows you to chose the goal to defend, but I really have not read the rule quite frankly.

I think the biggest benefit of the deferral rule is that it allows you to "stop the game" and "reset" to start the second half. The other team doesn't get to "continue to dominate you" if you are getting steamrolled on defense when the first half ends. Knowing the other team is ahead in points AND gets the ball back is a big psychological disadvantage going into halftime. The second benefit is that it gives you more options to start the second half because the first half is over and you already know the score. You don't know the score when the game starts. Unless my offense was dominant or at least pretty good, I will always defer.

Plus it allows you to pick the side of the field you want to defend in the first and fourth quarters

It depends. When we had the GSOT offense, we were up 7-0 in almost every game when we got the ball first.

You defer if you want to play a field position game. But Morris' uber soft scheme is a loser and means your offense will start the game playing from behind.

The only strategy that creates the possibility of having two consecutive offensive possessions (barring overtime) is deferring. That's a big plus in my opinion.

As a kid, I used to wonder why teams always took the ball first if they won the toss. A team with a good defense, I thought would be better off kicking off, stopping the opponent then getting the ball first in the second half.

The only exception was when the Rams had GSOT.

IMO it doesn’t matter, that soft ass schemed D will give it up anyway.
