Clay Matthews suffers broken jaw

Big loss. But every team has injuries. I am cautiously optimistic some younger guys can step up in his absence.

Wade LB'ing unit has been hit hard thus far with injuries. Starting MLB'er Micah Kiser went down in preseason along with Justin Lawler & Josh Carraway. New starting MLB Bryce Hager went out two games ago & was replaced by UDFA rookie Troy Reader. Reader's back up last Thursday looked to have been Clay Matthews at times but now CM is out & eating & drinking through a straw. I would expect Hager to be ready to return for the 9ers game.

Snead & Wade have several good young options to utilize while CM is out. Ebukam will obviously replace CM snaps in the defense. That's not a positive:cautious:. One would suppose that Natrez Patrick will take up the snaps from when both Dante Fowler (who was also injured but returned to the game) & Ebukam are on the sideline. 2nd season edge rusher Og Okoronkwo might finally see regular season action against the 9ers.

If Og does dress it will give us Ram fans something extra to watch with the prospect of something good to occur. It is projected that Og is the heir apparent replacement for a UFA Dante Fowler in March 2020. Wade also has the option of returning 2nd season Edge Justin Lawler from the IR or bringing up my favorite PS defender Landis Durham(y):). I really liked his play in preseason.

Speaking of the injury, are they going to wire his jaw shut? Because most guys who undergo that lose a ton of weight during the recovery...

I was thinking the exact same thing. Weight loss and not being able to have normal workouts seems like it would equate to more lost time.

I was also thinking maybe Clay would be lean and mean when he returns too... :p

The way we’ve been run on and the amount of double teams on AD - we need to trade to bring in a DT. Feeling the loss of Suh.

Our run defense was worse with Suh. This defense has been vulnerable to the shotgun run for about 10 years now it feels like. What I would give for an average offense (24ppg) and a great defense (16ppg). Three touchdowns and a field goal should win every game in this league with a good defense.

The Rams hope to have linebacker Clay Matthews back in the lineup for their Nov. 10 game against the Steelers, coach Sean McVay said Monday.

Matthews fractured his jaw in Thursday night’s loss to the Seahawks.
“He’s got his jaw wired shut,” McVay said. “I think he’s feeling good. That’s not an ideal situation. It was kind of a freak accident. He’ll be out for at least the next four to six weeks. It’s going to be something where you just kind of monitor that diet. Really, it’s going to be a challenge any time that you have that. He’ll do all the right things to put himself in a position to hopefully get back as soon as we’re able to take that thing off and then he’s able to fully function.

“I think, realistically, probably coming back after the bye is probably what’s the most likely realistic scenario for us.”
The Rams’ bye comes in Week Nine.

Seahawks running back Chris Carson inadvertently kicked Matthews in the face on a 6-yard run on third-and-goal from the 11-yard line in the fourth quarter when Matthews dove at Carson’s legs.
The Rams will fill in with Samson Ebukam, who has played 51.9 percent of the defensive snaps this season.
“Samson will be asked to step up,” McVay said. “He’s played a lot of important snaps for us. He’s a guy that we have a lot of confidence in. Really, we’ll have a chance to really get a chance to evaluate some of these younger players that might get a chance to play as well. Natrez Patrick, ‘Obo’ [Obgonnia Okoronkwo] will get a chance to step up. As we put together the game plan, I think we’ll get a little bit better feel, but Samson’s a guy that’s played a lot of valuable snaps for us, and he’ll immediately step into that starter’s role.”

I fully expect to get a lot of Samson.....meaning a guy being invisible.
OBO hasn’t seen the field in a regular season game.
Maybe he will have a big impact. I doubt it.
3-3 incoming.

The Rams were so loaded at OLB this pre-season you almost have to suspect someone expected a MASH unit to be required on the sidelines.

I'll throw in one more name that may make discarding UFA Dante Fowler less of a loss next season, ... Jachai Polite. Sure, he's been released by two teams prior to reaching us, so it's a bit difficult to raise too many high expectations, but if he's keeping his head about himself and learning the system properly, he may yet prove to be that unexpected talent landing in our laps who along with Obo challenges for starting positions right from the gate. Fowler or not, the Rams will be loaded again at Edge OLB in 2020, leaving CAP money available and draft picks for other areas of the team roster to consider. If everyone returns healthy next year, there may be no additional Rams offers for Fowler's services following this season.

Looking forward to seeing both Patrick and Obo going strong against the whiners next week.

Excellent post! I have been on the same page as you are on these two OLB'er posts for 2020 & beyond. Ram Org. has been utilizing draft selections for several drafts now on edge rushers. That's a lot of team assets directed towards these posts.

This past off season Rams (purchased for Wade @ near $16 million) two big named ER starters in Fowler & Matthews.

Full time starter Dante Fowler has not had the impact that part-time Matthews was having. DF only had 10 solo's & 2 sacks whereas CL has 13 solo's 6 sacks & 2 forced fumbles. Wade's D is sure to suffer with this injury to CL. CL replacement Ebukam is far from a complete ER & will need a ton of help from the bench. Ebukam is mediocre @ best in most required skills for a starting ER. I see no improvement coming from Ebukam & would expect him to exit LA when his contract expires end of 2020.

DF thus far is not having the impact that his $12 million price tagged imagined. DF's talents fits only 12 to 13 NFL teams defenses so the overall size of his range market is not that large. If I am reading the future overall salary cap tea leaves Rams will be hesitant to spend cap heavy with limited cap funds in the future for what Dante's gives in return @ high $$$$.

Rams still have a stable of healthy ER's besides DF & Ebukam. 2nd yr ER Okoronkwo, Rookie's Natrez Patrick, Jachai Polite & Landis Durham plus 2nd yr Justin Lawler can be brought back from the IR now.
