EARTH CITY, Mo. -- One week in, we've officially moved into the second wave of the free-agent market. The contracts handed out now are shorter, more reasonable or a combination of the two.
But there still are some recognizable names available who can contribute to a winning team. On Monday, ESPN NFL Nation columnist Kevin Seifert put together a list of the best of the rest on the free-agent market.
Included on the list are a pair of former Los Angeles Rams in defensive end Chris Long and defensive tackle Nick Fairley. Seifert put Long at No. 3 on the list with Fairley checking in at No. 6.
Long has had no shortage of suitors since the Rams released him and is expected to choose a team by the end of the week after completing a tour of NFL franchises that includes the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys, among others. Long joined 101 ESPN last week and discussed what's next for him, including his intent to show that he still has plenty of gas in the tank.
Fairley's market seems to be quieter than expected though he's been connected to the New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets at various points. That would seem to leave the door open for the Rams to attempt to bring him back though there doesn't seem to be anything imminent on that front.
Elsewhere on the list, there are a couple of players who still could make sense for the Rams if the price is right. Safety Reggie Nelson would be a good short-term solution for the Rams at free safety and the same could have been said for Eric Weddle before he signed with the Baltimore Ravens on Monday.
Of more interest, the Rams have had visits with linebacker Quinton Coples and receiver Rueben Randle in recent days.
