Chiefs not practicing at altitude pre-Mexico City

I’ll just say this, when I went to Colorado with a buddy for a week, it took me the entire week to get acclimated to the altitude change.. great time, but could’ve done without the constant ear-popping and lethargic feels..

I posted this previously but anyone who watches MMA knows that preparation for the altitude can make all the difference. See Cain Velasquez as an example. He was the HW Champ and one of his main attributes is his cardio. He failed to prep for the altitude and was gassed within 3 rounds and was defeated. Granted his opponent trained at altitude for 6 weeks and Cain only had 2 weeks but the effect was huge. I'm guessing that red blood cell transfusions are not allowed (i.e., storing a small quantity of each player's red blood cells then putting them back a few days before going to Mexico). That would be the most effective way of prepping for the altitude.

A friend of mine asked why the Rams don't just use altitude masks while practicing. Good question. It would likely be cheaper.

I recall reading about research regarding altitude masks. It basically said that the masks are somewhat useless for actually adapting to higher altitude if you’re only wearing them for workouts, and that all you’re really doing is depriving yourself of oxygen for that particular workout but with no longer term change in your body’s adaptation. It really only works if you kept the mask on all the time over a certain time span rather than wearing them only for a workout/practice.

Yeah no doubt, have to think the big boys on both lines are the concern there too. Not to mention Andy Reid is himself a big MFer, so if I'm a KC fan I think I'd be worried about him gettin out of breath calling plays.

Oh and re: the organization as a whole, really like how the Rams are doing this. Seems to me that they're demonstrating yet again that they're an elite franchise.

They play in Denver every year.

With altitude, you either arrive a week early so you acclimate or you arrive within 24 hours of game time and it won’t affect you as much. There have been plenty of studies on this and it sounds like it’s 50/50 on what the better approach is.

The important thing is staying hydrated when playing at elevations like these.

Well... both the Rams and the KC mullets asked the NFL to schedule their games against Denver this year for the week before this Mexico City game. The NFL denied them both because they didn't want to give an unfair advantage to just one team. Wow... not like the NFL to make decisions with fair balance in mind lol.

Yeah that was a good call but in reality they had to go that way so lets not give them too much credit. LOL.

Blood doping is illegal, plus there are some risks involved.

The Rams are well coached. That's why penalties are down.

But lesser teams can compete with the Rams when 35 holding penalties aren't called, or an intentional grounding that was completely overlooked in the 4th quarter when we were ahead 36-24.

I can live with bad officiating as long as we get away with a few as well. Or at least if we get favorable calls at home, which was not the case against Sheattle on Sunday.

Maybe Aaron Donald needs to start wearing those tearaway jerseys so he can look at the official and say "what? I didn't tear my own shirt"

I just posted that in another thread. Our DL and WRs need to wear them, if nothing else, to make a point. We
take the fine when caught because they will get torn off pretty quickly. Maybe we could modify the neck and shoulder areas of jersey with velcro so they could be put back together after the play? That would pretty funny to watch.

Moot point now with the game back in LA. I played college ball in Montana, and I can tell you when teams, from a lower altitude came to play, they were winded by the 4th quarter. And the few times we played in California, it was like you never felt winded or there was a lack of energy. It does make a difference even for one game.

Sound like they will come back on Saturday. With all the arrangements made anticipating to play in Mexico City, I'm sure they didn't want to change. Also, this will be a great week to get some extra "Team Time" together and maybe a bit more focus for the game.
