"To hell with your deal. To hell with our lives. Someone has to start telling the truth."

Do yourself a favor if you have HBO, watch this miniseries. Since many of us are old bastids, we lived through this disaster without knowing how close it came to wiping out Europe. This story tells of the conflicting need of the state to cover up failings of the Soviet nuclear power industry and the safety of the whole of Europe by revealing these failings. Seventeen nuclear power stations just like Chernobyl were still operating in 1986, with the same fatal flaw. I won't tell you what that is because, it would spoil it for you.

Network television is bullshit, but places like HBO are doing stellar work.

Really wanted to watch it , but we don't get HBO

I still remember the very first time I heard it being reported

I was in the Navy , sitting at a desk doing paperwork when it came over the radio

I don't think they compare, Train. Over 700,000 Soviet troops were sent there to try to stop the unfolding catastrophe, MANY died within days...Soviets sent their guys to certain deaths... When it was BETTER, there was enough radiation emitted that was twice Hiroshima, every single day. That never happened at Hanford...

I was crew on the nuclear power fast attack sub USS Olympia (SSN 717) at the time. The nukes on board had to learn all about it, just like they did with Three Mile Island.

Don't have HBO, but I'll pick it up when it's released on iTunes or Amazon, have heard nothing but good things about it.

I haven't even spoiled in any real way..
Please do. I don't have HBO, I probably won't watch it when it gets released elsewhere (I couldn't convince my wife to watch a documentary on anything), but I'm very interested in this fatal flaw.

I need you Loyal. You're my only hope.

It really is great.
Just an amazing job of creating an atmosphere of tension and low level dread.
Fantastic so far.

Fantastic so far.

For a movie that does the same thing and involves both Soviets and nuclear reactors, check out K-19: The Widowmaker.

It’s fucking horrible

They do create a mood of extreme creepiness but seriously it’s just one massive grey scale masquerading as drama — there is nothing going on in the damn show — zero

It’s really just a depressing extension of the Walking Dead - makeup artists mastering the fine art of oozing latex as skin falling off.

The first scene of the show encapsulates all you all you need to know about this show - guy reads solemnly into dictaphone - then hangs himself.

There is no spoiler guys - it’s fucking Chernobyl

And enough with the cigarettes and hard alcohol consumption HBO - i mean does it have to be every damn show? Narcos, True Crime, Chernobyl - give it a rest.

I disagree, but, that was a great review.
By all accounts 1980s Soviet Union was grey, grim and filled with smoking and drinking.
I have noticed the drinking and smoking thing is used a lot, in movies too, as a crutch for character development.
I can't remember the last Liam Neison movie I saw where his character didn't drink scotch.
Anyway, I'm digging it but I enjoyed your take on it.
And you're right....spoiler? It's a historic event.

Yep, it was the Soviet Union. The USSR was known for gray depressing antiquated buildings, crappy Soviet produced automobiles, and long lines for everything. It’s a fine example of an overly reliant commodity based, centrally planned economy. This is the result of a 20th century utopian State where a lot of people die and the rest live depressing lives, unless you were part of the Soviet elite.

Smoking and drinking were and maybe still are epic problems in the USSR/Russia, and so past shows on HBO have nothing to do with it. Alcoholism generally & Vodka in particular were massive social problems. Yet when dealing with horrific disasters, it is common for officials to dole out massive amounts of alcohol to help workers deal with it. One case of it in America was Galveston in 1900 after the Great Hurricane killed 8000-12000 people. Those tasked with gathering bodies into piles for burning were given as much whiskey as they could drink to dull the horror. Plus, the ground water around Chernobyl was radioactive and so drinking bottled whatever, would be better
As for the smoking, it was epic in the USSR and was a huge problem here as well in the 80’s. I remember seeing posters on my ship, proclaiming a “smoke free Navy by the year 2000.” Today that statement isn’t crazy, but back in 1986 it was sheer lunacy.

I agree with you that this a great miniseries. I think some are jaded after watching a million zombie flicks and bad horror shows. Chernobyl was a real life horror show where skin did peal off in chunks and radioactive graphite would cook a victim like a microwave.

Saw a couple of auto shows about Soviet era vehicles that were great.
Just cheap plastic and aluminum with lawnmower engines.

I meant to click on the “Make us Laugh” thread, but apparently this isn’t it...

I'm Yakov from Stalingrad, and I made an order for a new car and the clerk said it would take 22 years to deliver.
"Twenty Two YEARS?!?!."I exclaimed
"Da," said the clerk
Shaking my head I exclaimed, "Morning or afternoon!?"
"Morning, but why?" said the clerk
"Good. Because the plumber. comes in the afternoon.."

(Paraphrased from a Russian-American comic, Yakov Smirnoff)
